God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

No, it’s like when Pedro offered Ronny a player, which one do you want from this lot?

Always dangerous to read too much into 45 mins, but Henderson and Stokes look at best mediocre.

Disappointed inHibs , was expecting more.

Houston is a decent manager and is likely to set up his team is to ride this out and take a good fist leg result back hame.

I’m enjoying this Hibs game, not much skill but a proper game of football from 2 teams who don’t seem to have any love for each other. That Hibs keeper is a big unit, looks about 2 stone over weight, so there’s hope for me yet !

I was hoping Sutton would have taken the bait when the commentator mentioned that Steven McLean got the cup final but the big man bit his tongue…not like him…

  7. Moyes, Keane or Rodgers? For me Moyes is the best of an uninspiring bunch of big names. I doubt whether any of them would get us into the CL group stage, as that is par for the course for a Celtic manager in his first season or two. I would prefer a European manager with some kind of track record in the Europa League/CL, if that is realistic. But given Ronny’s perceived failure I am sure the board will go for a British/Irish manager.

Fingers crossed for the Hibs. Was listening to radio last week talking about utd staying up and saying great for Dundee keeping the Derby not one mention of the Edinburgh Derby, Surely its even bigger.

Celtic supporters are, or should be, better than that level of foul abuse. More akin to FF site.

Arguments, criticisms OK but that degree of degradation is worrying.

Thank you, P67 for this blog. I have never met you and don’t want to come across as a. sycophantic toad but your patience is commendable.

Can we get back to Celtic and things that affects ct Celtic supporters. HH

  12. Manure surprised by heavy traffic in London tonight again(!) and by another team having local supporters out in numbers for their team’s historic farewell to their home ground.

Get there on time! Now West Ham players disadvantaged due to police/ premier league giving in to their whining about proper warm-up time.

What about fans getting back to Manchester?

    Oh, wait. . . .

  13. A coach who can implement his vision throughout the entire football structure would save us a fortune in buying duds.

Surely that would appeal to the suits.

Develop your own and sell them for squillions would have Pete slavering.

Packy ‘Rangers are a fantastic football club’ Bonner. That quote was from 2013 on Sky, right in middle of the great tax scandal, which topped off the 90 year no catholics policy, not to mention their hatred of all things Irish.

It got him an earner right enough.

Moyes seems to me also the best of an uninspiring promoted list of replacements.

Surely our wise custodians with their intimate knowledge of the situation and business have more worthy in mind

I think all the big names look uninspiring and I have a feeling all the big names are treading water for the epl and championship fallout. I work with a liverpool fan and they still call rodgers the charlatan. :(

You know what Yogi or Neilson would make us hard and play decent football if the board want to play it tight again, I would rather that than another Ronnie, No harm, but these guys know the bread and butter games and do well with very limited budget. Heard Neilson aint a big fan of the east end but you know what he has made hearts a force in a short period of time. I know we have beat them a few times under Ronnie but still.

  17. Could all the whiz kid finance guys and football geniuses show me how we can attract agents of decent players to suggest to their charges to play in a crap league, with no domestic competition, where even if you win the league your may be hounded out as a failure, where your own fans at home games don’t even allow you one missed pass before they are on your back ready to boo the team off and where even winning the media will give you a bad time and where the officials are routinely bias against your club.

The odds against you making this work and succeeding in that environment are virtually zero and add to it Scotland is behind Cyprus, Israel, Denmark and that diddy league Norway. Within a year we are likely to be overtaken by Azerbajan and Khazakstan, all though these already spend more on players than we can afford to as a league.

With China developing, J League still strong and the USA also growing pro leagues why would any too player think of coming to play at Celtic. If would take more than £20m signing and salary for a could,e of mercenary benchwarmers like Borigter or his ilk.

Some folk don’t learn though. That penny is even dropping in Govan. Get real CSC.
