God love (and save us from ) Packie Bonner

God love Packie Bonner, spend “£20m to £30m to bring those quality players the fans are desperate for”.

There are two opposing world views: one where people call for unaffordable money [those figures would be]to be spent because fans of a football club are “desperate”, the other where people want football clubs to spend what they can afford.

The latter group remember football’s crash-and-liquidate days – and learned the lessons. The former also remember the crash-and-liquidate days, but they are impervious to lessons.

We can debate what the size of an affordable spend is, but a couple of parameters have to be observed:

If it increases the cost base to such an extent that a reversal on the field would plunge the club into financial disarray, it’s unaffordable.

Players need to be appropriate for the environment – with neighbouring clubs earning £100m each season from TV deals, only players of a certain profile will play for a club with a considerably smaller wage bill (and turnover).

We live in a time when Scots Steven Naismith went for £8.5m (1 goal in 9 starts) and Ross McCormack went for £11m. These are common values for this calibre of player. We all want Celtic to improve, but that will not be achieved by spending unsuitable or unaffordable money. Packie, think back to Valentine’s Day 2012 and add a dose of perspective.

Get better at scouting, get fitter, improve the coaching – and spend everything you can afford, not any more.  That’s the model for Celtic.

Alex Neil how underwhelming an ex Hamilton accs manager with no European history who has led Norwich city from the EPL to the championship. Is that how far our standards have slipped shocking. H.H.

  2. See aul Packy getting it a bit tight…

Now before I comment, I’d just say I’ve alreadty posted today agreeing with Paul67’s…

    Spend everything you can afford…

Now does 20-30 Million seem alot of money to you in regard to Celtic?

Well that’s the amount we lost by not qualifying for the UCL in the last couple of Seasons.

    Hail Hail

  3. When Andy Carroll was running through on goal from just inside the Manure half with just De Gea to beat, why didn’t he head it?

Heard a few Ipswich players say Keane’s bravado was all a front for the media, behind closed doors he was brand new.

  5. Neganon2

I heard Dungcaster on the wireless when driving home tonight

Sure he acts for level 5 and that same club propaganda

Anyway, talking about new sponsor for some cup, and how it would great having someone back

So pisses me off, a head of a so called professional organisation, and someone legally trained can talk so much dross, and ignore law

And Celtic will again not challenge his pish

  6. From RK book

I don’t think I’m a bad manager, but at Ipswich I managed badly,” writes Keane. “I spoke to some people like something on the bottom of my shoe.”

The 43-year-old, now assistant to Martin O’Neill and Paul Lambert with the Republic of Ireland and Aston Villa respectively, adds: “I don’t f****** like blue. City were blue, Rangers were blue. My biggest rivals were blue. Is that childish? I couldn’t feel it.”

So you think managers should be chosen on tunnel performance?

I cann understand why some want Keane. The thing is though he’s not a very good manager.

  8. Joe Filippis Haircut on

GEORDIEMUNRO. He is still not for me if we cant bring in better we are in a worse state than I thought. H.H.

  9. Can everyone please stop saying the word “Keane” please?

Hilariously we have had Burnley”Celtic are a well run club” 78 on tonight along with Jerry ” pay Peter a million pound a year for making sure Celtic don’t go bust” cornelious.

  11. Bob O' Baldy on

It’s a joke that people would defend Lawwell for even thinking he was worth half the annual salary of the best player in the club’s history.

I’ve always been of the view there are too many posters on here with their fingers in the till.

That would certainly explain why there are so many Tories and New Labour types on here. When greed is your only motivation, and you are on here, then being on here is hardly “downtime” from your day job.

I’m of the view that being greedy is a 24hr occupation.

Never such a thing as enough for these people.

That’s why I had a chuckle when there was so much outrage about the Daily Ranger article. The Daily Ranger and the resident Tories have the same moral outlook on money, so why are the Tories complaining when its only what they would do under different circumstances?

*just highlighting his ability tae stick up for a team mate, something that’s been badly lacking at Celtic for a few years.

  14. West End of East End on

On the new manager, for every name mentioned you could make a case against. Every manager about these days will have some failures to their name, that’s how you learn surely.

It will come down to our own personal opinion of whoever is chosen, then it’s suck it and see…

  15. …and I have never seen anything in yer wan’s demeanor that suggests that even the most junior of Hun Sleekits in either the MSM or SFA who would not be relishin’ ropin’ the (managerial) dope in any number of loaded set-ups……..

We’ve always done our business outwith the headline hullabalooo boys……

    Lang may this continue.

So so Sad if PL has given them an interview

Was he not paying any attention to the pre-match pitch on Sunday

  17. Another classy move by Peter eh. Invite hillsborough families to Celtic one day. Blab your nonsense to the sun the next.

    Nice touch Peter.

  18. Neganon. Your bitterness tonight seems even more acute than ever.

I still don’t know why YOU are not running the club given you have such uncompromising values and can see all the problems that are there and clearly you have all the skill set and experience to sort them. It sounds like you would do it for nothing too. I cant for the life of me see how the clubs shareholders wouldn’t back your candidacy for the top job.

Such a shame that Celtic gives you such resentment and sadness.

  19. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Cowiebhoy – great post. Genuinely appreciate your dilemma.

Had same situ last week. Hacked off with many things about the club.

Renewed all my tickets on Saturday. The Hillsborough story and the TJN report tipped the balance – IMHO our enemies are a hundred times worse than our board.

Regardless of what decision u make – it will be the right one.

    Hail hail

  20. blantyretim is praying for the Knox family on

Well I won’t know what our CEO has to say if he says it in the msm

  21. Burnley78 damn right I am bitter. I am bitter at the corruption, the waste, the lies, the greed. I am bitter for all the young supporters dawn raided, that all our details were handed to the police, that the green brigade got kettled and then banned.

I am bitter that free speech doesn’t exist at Celtic. I am bitter that stewards bully the support.

I am bitter about the board silence, lack of leadership, cowardice and utter incompetence.

I could do a better job.

But the problem is I would want Celtic to be the best the can and I wouldn’t put up with the corruption and cheating.

So I have no chance mate.

You do put up with it and make excuses for it.

So you are the better candidate.

Are y ou please that Lawwell is using the sun to spread whatever lies he has to tell us tomorrow?
