Going out of business chasing unrealistic dreams

112

With the Billy McNeill statue unveiling, the Celtic Foundation Bucket Collection and our own defeat on Saturday I missed out on the goings-on in the Championship until watching Sportscene last night. I’m not sure if Hibernian are good enough to win the league but the habit of scoring last minute goals, and the exploitative attitude which was on show against Queen of the South, is a strong portent.

Hard on the heels of this penny dropping The Herald this morning asked us to consider increasing the capacity of the Premiership to allow an un-promoted Newco to play top flight football next season. There will be a strong blog on this later, but the thought occurred to me:

Rangers died chasing this:

While Newco are going the same way chasing this:

I agree the results in Europe could have been better but if you look at those 1st two draws on EL group we were in control until those individual errors, so that suggests that despite what many say RD can set his teams up correctly. His ability to adjust mid-game is suspect but MON was guilty of that too – which is one of the reasons I think his teams failed get out of CL groups.

Just a general comment not aimed at you but I’m really at a loss as to why Henrik Larsson keeps getting mentioned for the job. His highest league finish as a manager was 5th in the Swedish 2nd division. He got Helsingborgs to 10th in the top division last year, That’s his home club. I see nothing in his results to suggest he can make players play above themselves and that’s one thing we really need.

We must be doing better in both the league and European competition.

Its clear that trying to dominate the league with a reduced footballing capacity, in terms of substandard players, is the strategy of trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

    It wont work.

There is no doubt that we have declined as a football force in the space of three years, as our woeful efforts recently show.

We need all round improvement…..from the board to the manager and the players.

Put simply…it is not good enough.

  5. If RD keeps up with his current points per game he’ll end the season on 90-ish. That’s pretty much the mid point for the league winners since 2000.

Last year the team improved a lot after the Christmas period, so I suspect that he’ll be up on the upper area of points totals come season’s end.

In what way should RD be doing better in the league, that being the case? He’s scoring above average and he’s heading for an above average points total (imo but to be proven).

    Well said Paul.

I wonder how the Hibs supporters feel about getting lumped into the “Scottish football needs Rangers (sic) and Hibs in the top league” campaign.

I imagine they would be pretty peed off at being made to look like they are asking for a helping hand.

I’m sure they would be looking to get promoted on merit. And I wouldn’t bet against it.

  7. Weeminger

RD should be doing better in the league, look at his record.

We got beat by Motherwell on Sat.

We are only just ahead of Aberdeen….when we should be running away with it.

If you cant see that improvement is needed….then I don’t know what to tell you.

But let me remind you…..thousands of Celtic supporters are sick of RD, like it or not.

    That’s the reality.

I think it’s easier to give leeway when a manager shows he is capable – even as a one-off – of guiding the club to victory against well matched or better teams. Ronny hasn’t done that once in his 18 month reign.

An alternative view of his domestic form-

First home loss to Hamilton since 1938:

    One home win v Motherwell in 3 attempts;

    0 wins from 2 attempts this season v a Kilmarnock side that has shipped goals to all and sundry;

Two 0-0 draws at home so far in the league.

Signing a surplus of players who he subsequently deems as not being regular first team starters and then in desperation reverting back to the likes of mcgregor several million quid later.

Ronny alone isn’t the cause of our problems. But he can and should do better with what he has. So many winning positions in European football surrendered meekly.

  10. Attempting to post on CQN here in the States from my iPhone- most days days a never ending loop of getting bumped to the App Store by tracking URLs. So most days I don’t bother.

As my late Uncle Andy once said to me: “Son, there’s twa things yae dinnae speak ill of in public- your marriage and Celtic Football Club. The two are hard enough without giving others a half-chance to stir nonsense”.

A wise one was my oul uncle the farm worker. Just look at the gleeful headlines on Newsnow Celtic today from the gutter MSM . Dearie me.

  11. The biggest crime and scandal in British football , especially given the impact it has had on Celtic and the game in Scotland should always be a high priority of those who have the best interests of Celtic at heart.

Our common enemy will hi-jack any opportunity to mis-direct and obfuscate the issues central to a successful Celtic.

  12. I watched the Southampton – Spurs match at the weekend.

Wanyama was rag dolled the whole game and Van Dijk strolled through the game turning his back as attackers shot for goal. He was eventually nutmegged while half heartedly trying to close his legs.

    Cost his team another goal.

Bhoy, did we miss a coupla bullets there!

Surprised that you are advocating the removal of RD. PL is the problem, and I know you believe that too.

Sack RD and leave PL in charge just moves the problem down the line.

Simple fact is that PL either goes or returns to his original remit. He runs Celtic as his own personal fiefdom. His ego long ago outran his talents and his usefulness.

He is now-and for a long time hence-a drain on resources and a blight on our future. That he is a divisive figure amongst the support is long overdue, but hardly unexpected.

His time is up. He should leave with what is left of his reputation.

    Is our club tranparent enough?

    ———————————

Maybees Aye, Maybees Naw. But before I can answer categorically I would like to see through the thinking behind Signing Carlton Cole, who sanctioned it and who actually wanted the player in his current condition.

    Hail, Hail.

  15. The Green Man on 21st December 2015 12:40 pm

The fact that Aberdeen are close has hee haw to do with RD. We could have won every game in theory they could still be only 2 points further back (if they won all games apart from us).

Whoever we have managing us will be tasked with using more youth. I said the other night that you’ll always get inconsistency with youthful teams. So while I’ve suggested we could theoretically get 102 points this season I think 95-ish to be more likely. That’d still be higher than normal for a league winner since 2000.

He’s not doing a great job, I just don’t think he’s doing that badly.

  16. My friends in Celtic,

If PL was sacked tomorrow, how many additional Season Book sales would it ensure. ? How much more demand for tickets or merchandise would result.?

He’s from John Park’s seven year old scouting info book I would imagine, agents or players hawking round looking for a last club to play for, did Freddie Lunjdberg teach us nothing:))

Your post @10.42 is a fine summary of our 1st team squad abilities and otherwise.

I’m afraid our manager seems more and more every week like an idealistic not learning or adapting to the evidence staring him in the face.

We suffered last season with 2 quick centre backs yet still leave their replacements continually exposed.

    Fundamental basics.

Problems that can be easily rectified from the perspective of paying punters in the stands are blind to those in the dugout. HH

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Thought Ronny was only supposed to be judged on his results in Europe. Lose our first domestic game in ages and all of a sudden that goes out the window…..

  20. We are all in agreement we need competition in the league.

Aberdeen are a point behind us on merit.

Our results this far in the league have us comparible with previous winning seasons.

The reaction from a vast majority after swallowing the gutter MSM hysteria that we are doomed…Hook line and sinker.

  21. Greenpinata

Well that’s partially what prompted me to ask. There seems to be a great deal of confusion over who sets the transfer targets and who approves them. Is Carlton Cole really a player that RD would ever chose of his own accord?

I’m currently undertaking a bit of private research into different football club structures such as fan/member ownership. Transparency is a major tenet of such club structures. Could we benefit from more transparency? As you say, mibbes aye, mibbes naw….

  22. See someone posted that Catman mentioned Stefan j could be away in January .. Anyone have the post ? Very limited internet at the moment in outback oz.

Will try check in morning .

  23. Paul67, from yesterday, the system has to change, of course it has to change but who is going to change it. The 3 clueless coaches we have now? i doubt it very much.

This is the weakest collection of Celtic players i have ever seen. An 18 year old boy was given the responsibilty at the weekend as the rest of the team are quite frankly cowards.

Bring in a older coach who can teach the present 3 how to set up a team and for gods sake bring in some players with a backbone.

Just read the Herald article. As soon as I saw the name “Matthew Lindsay” at the top I knew what to expect.

Errr – increased finances through broadcasting and sponsorship? Didn’t we just do new deals on both? With no “Rangers” in the premiership?

All clubs have to live within their means. 41 of them manage just fine.

  25. Yes, the attitude on Saturday from our youthful, budding millionaires was unacceptable. The performance just as dire.

    HOWEVA, consider this-

A team of mostly young men, already nervous and unsettled on the receiving end of negative hysteria. What inspires then to improve and regain their confidence? Abuse, or support?

I sincerely hope none of the detractors own a business, or are operations executives of any business with the eyes on making a profit, if they are I have news for you- yer going bankrupt.

  26. James Forrest says much more elequently what I have been saying for weeks – we must “stop digging” – soon the hole will prove too deep to clamber out of.

I am sure that Paul is wrong that Ronny is safe and that at this moment we are putting Plan B in place – as I have said, to give breathing-space for evaluation, we should try and ‘borrow’ WGS for the next seven months.

Because we play in such a sub-standard league, Ronny cannot be judged on our plain domestic position.

We are going backwards on the park, tactics are almost non-existent – last week at Perth we won more by luck than judgement, this week any luck ran out – St Johnstone and Motherwell should have scored EIGHT between them.

We need a leader in the dugout, sorry Ronny is not that man.

  27. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

‘Going out of business chasing unrealistic dreams’

There are two interpretations of that headline

1 a cautionary tale – look what happened to Rangers which is the default diversionary tactic after a poor performance or sustained fan dissatisfaction . I think that’s what Paul was trying to convey on behalf of Celtic Plc. This assumes the dream is football focussed.

    2 . The unrealistic dream

Could on the other hand be the achievement of über efficiency taken too far to the point where you have no product that can be sold and customers dessert you and you are left with no business?

  28. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Just over a week ago we were away from home at Perth some would say at that time Scotlands form team we beat St.Johnstone 0-3 very comfortably and most Celtic supporters I know were very happy with our performance. Now only one week later we had a right off day and lost at home 1-2 and suddenly Ronny isnt up to the job our team is poor and many want Ronny sacked. That is a knee jerk reaction in my opinion we can still win the treble and we can also strengthen the side in January. I say give Ronny until the end of the season and then Judge him as by then he could have won 5 domestic trophies out of six and for me that is good going. H.H.
