Government’s decade of harassing and criminalising football fans

249

I get that we all need to do our bit to suppress Covid, but we know so much more about the disease now than we did earlier in the year.  We know its transmission rates in well-monitored socially distanced outdoor spaces is significantly less than unmonitored indoor spaces.  Maybe by as much as 1000 times safer.

If the country needs to go back into lockdown, fair enough, but if indoor venues are preferred over football stadiums it has nothing whatsoever to do with the virus or science.  It is politicians who are blind to evidence picking on the same people they have victimised for years.  This Government has harassed and attempted to criminalise football fans since they got their mits of power over a decade ago, it would be a disgrace if they went against the science to stick the boot in one more time.

Honestly, as someone who’s lost a relative to this thing already and who’s worried about others in the family, I am absolutely sick and tired of this pish – and that’s what it is – that these measures are un-necessary or designed to hammer football fans.

Absolute garbage, I’m sorry to say.

On allowing a test-run in rugby before football there was a point there … ridiculous decision and one that they couldn’t defend and didn’t even try to.

But I’ve listened to all this crap about how stadiums are safe and it’s exactly that. The editorials on here talk about the science; the science is the same across Europe and these measures have been imposed across Europe. If the Scottish Government is anti-football fans then clearly the one in Westminister is as well.

You don’t need to be a scientist to know that cramming people into stadium concourses in their thousands is insanity. That policing it is a headache that makes it just not worthwhile. That travelling to and from games requires filling public transport with fans … manifestly unsafe. That ferries from Ireland will make marvellous focal points for outbreaks that snake across the country …I could go on and on, but what’s the point? The overlords have spoken, and this is the line.

It is lamentable. It sends the message that those of us who are worried about loved ones or ourselves are hysterics. But hey, Peter’s bonus is up for grabs, and that’s what matters.

    ______________________________________________________________________________________

While I agree with most of your points, the one about ferries from Ireland is way off. I don’t think Paul, Celtic or the football authorities were suggesting that any time soon there would be fans from Ireland coming to matches. Both trials and then limited capacity games will all be filled by ‘local’ fans, i.e. Glasgow, Lanarkshire etc. There’s no suggestion as far as I know from anyone including CSCs in Ireland or England that they will be admitted either this year or possibly this season, yikes! Certainly, our CSC does not expect to see a live game at Celtic Park any time this coming winter.

I respectfully disagree with your persistent anti-Holyrood Government stance regarding COVID-19.

I think your criticism of the ScotGov safety measures is based more on your obvious dislike of their ideology than anything else.

“Do you see value in sitting in a mask, ten seats away from your mate?”

Yes. I would much rather be at the game (considering I’ve paid £600 for a season book) than watch it at home.

To be honest, its commonplace. When I go to Hamden for a cup game I’ve always sat by myself away from my mates. That’s the way to cookie crumbles. It’s not ideal but it’s better than missing it.

Further to that, if a husband and wife have books together there is no reason they can’t attend and sit together. So long as there is still a limited amount of people to each stairwell and toilet.

“How are they going to police it? Are you going to wati your turn on the stairs? Queue with social distancing for the one open bathroom in each section?”

It’s obvious how it’s going to be policed. It would be done by Stewards and the Police who will be there.

Once again, the strain on these areas, stairwells & toilets etc. Will be far lower when the stadium is nine-tenths empty.

“your grovelling acceptance that you got it wrong will not bring back the dead.”

    Save the dramatics.

The safest thing in the world would be to close everything. Every pub, restaurant and even public parks. No football. Not even behind closed doors.

But there is an acceptance that, this isn’t going away overnight, and for the good of people’s mental wellbeing we should be allowed to live a little. Safely socially distanced.

Pubs, restaurants, and retail shops have all opened. There’s no argument they are any safer than a nine-tenths empty stadium.

What you are doing is painting the whole general public with the same brush. Painting every situation as the same.

Celtic Football Club have the ability to control what goes on in their stadium more than any pub or restaurant. The can plan who attends and how many attends. They can plan where they will be at all times.

As I said, the Germans have a responsible attitude to this. If infection rates are too high in Glasgow that’s fine. Keep Celtic Park empty. But why should infection rates in Glasgow mean Pittodrie needs to be empty?

Fans were allowed in Dortmund but not Munich. It makes sense.

“The editorials on here talk about the science; the science is the same across Europe and these measures have been imposed across Europe.”

Fans are in stadiums on the continent. France and Germany for example.

“That ferries from Ireland will make marvellous focal points for outbreaks that snake across the country”

If that’s a problem all you do is invite fans local to Glasgow. As is the policy in Germany.

How do you propose policing this?

What happens when the ML crew or Dumbarton crew arrive?

You suggesting that £8 per hour stewards are going to be left to tell people who turn up (despite being told not to, and potentially under the influence of alcohol or substances) that they won’t get in because they don’t have a Glasgow postcode?

  11. A decade or now when people look back at this pandemic they’re going to laugh at twats whose major concern was getting inside the stadium to see their team. There are much bigger issues, frankly.

    ____

Yes I do. Stewards, supported by Police, are used to dealing with drunk football fans.

Second of all, if you want to make up examples of folk who refuse to comply, you might as well propose the closure of everything. It’s pretty common for me to see a group of 8 or so lads drinking in the park from most likely 8 different households.

Should we close the parks for everyone? So people like me without a garden can’t walk the dog?

  13. Theres NO second wave. Its a lie. Its just tests that get loads of false positives and a few that feeling bit off weather. Its a pretext for the theroll-out of the Great New Global Reset. It’s not my only concern no. But part of life is enjoying recreational activities.

What a selfish ‘twat’ I must be for trying to get some enjoyment at the weekends when I’m not working 5 days a week in a less safe environment!

  16. Where’s the benefit to the economy in letting fans back into stadiums?

If you can’t demonstrate such a benefit then it isn’t going to happen while there is a risk if spreading the virus.

Fans being ever so upset and throwing their toys out of the pram because they can’t go to the fitba just isn’t going to cut it.

    Get real.

I think the Germans have it right. Allowing certain fans in certain stadiums based on local infection rates. Ensuring all fans invited are local.

But surely the same criteria applies right? The German and French economy isn’t reliant on football gate money yet they allow fans in.

Is it possible that they see value in it other than cash? That maybe people need some enjoyment in their life? Especially those forced to go back to work now furlough is over. Driving taxis, working in restaurants and pubs. Working in clothes shops.

All more dangerous activities than an outdoor stadium nine-tenths full

  21. Pheasant shoots are ok with up to 30 people

  22. Nicolas new rule that NO ONE can visit your home etc…means that I now have to tell Kylie Minogue to ” Stay Away” !

    whit a bummer.

    LOL

    HH.

  23. I think I should also reiterate that this is not simply about Celtic.

If infection rates are too high in Glasgow, by all means, keep Parkhead empty. But should Pittodrie or Tannadice be empty if their local areas are safer?

  24. The Battered Bunnet on

ScotGov giving a heads up that there might be a mini lockdown during the October week – a so-called circuit breaker.

That sounds like at least one round of fixtures being postponed.

The October week runs from Friday 9th to Sunday 18th October.

Anyone know who we’re scheduled to play on the 17th?

  25. Mental health can be as important as physical but there’s a balance. The perception that all football fans will go to the pub(which are allowed to be open) pre match may be of been their choice pre covid, may not be now. They might just want to see their beloved team, which is part of what they see as their community and are currently being denied whilst apparently the pub culture is being allowed. Travel a concern obviously but locality should be considered in test event which true supporters should accept if mid long term goal is showing it can work. Getting through this mentality is a big challenge for everyone, so safe community activity actively helps with mental health. Agree there’s no hard and fast answer.

  26. MELBOURNE MICK….

Are all the Burds from Italy, Greece and the Lebanon ALL called ” Sheila” ?
