Great times for Celtic

822

It’s always encouraging to read positive comment on your club, so the positivity from a sports brand consultant at Brand Finance was welcome.  Apparently we are something of a commercial miracle, reaching parts no one else from a small country can come close to.

It’s also delightful hearing about glamour preseason friendlies (not quite announced yet, but coming).  We are a club with more than just history, we have a team the best in the world want to play.  We also have a future.

We have the league championship trophy in the boardroom, Champions League qualifiers to look forward to, and the sun is shining on Glasgow!

These are great times for Celtic.

  1. Interesting debate re schools. Schools exist to teach children values, or they should exist to teach values. You don’t pick values up off the ground. They come first from the family, then, in loco parentis, by the teacher. A singular model for schools does not exist for a very good reason. The reason is that each person/family sees education in a different way. Voltaire wrote a novel called “Emil” in which he proposed that children should be allowed to learn at their own pace, to pick it up as they went along. Anyone see the obvious flaw in this? Catholic schools exist because there is a demand for them, and the teaching of a distinction between right and wrong is at the heart of it. There is a paradox here. Secularism has itself become a religion. It is Voltaire without the reasoning. If a child is brought up with page 3 of the Sun what is that child learning? If, on the other hand the child is taught that difference, then later in life that child will have a reference point. We can move to a different slant here. Why, in all the stories and tragedies that came out of N. Ireland, do we find that a large number of Nationalist/Republican prisoners came out of prison with educational qualifications, while their Loyalist counterparts kept to the steroids and the bodybuilding? Where did that ethos come from that produced the music and poetry? The answer is family first and education second. So Scotland would be extremely foolish to discard a force for good. The country needs more schools with that Catholic ethos and the dedication of the teachers therein.

My son’s best mates are Huns. They attend RC secondary. Their Dads are Huns. I told you Celtic open to all. So too are RC schools. Ethos of respect. If that was taught at home there would only be one team in Glasgow. No need to challenge this right to achieve one team. Not paying taxes and cheating should see sensible kids choose the good guys. Oh aye and being made to feel welcome regardless of race, religion, gender ,age or disability! Get with the programme ya big teuchter! ;-)

Only one ditty mate. The “Kilmarnock” fan!

  3. I fell in love with Celtic not because I’m a Catholic, but because I remember watching Mo Johnston and Brian McClair on St and Greavsie’s show on a Saturday morning. I loved those green and white hoops. I’m from a GAA family. My Father never watched a soccer match in his life until I begged him to take me to see those hoops. We have been together many times. He is a fan now. Seville was our last game together. I will never forget him hugging me outside that stadium as we both cried tears of joy after a heart breaking defeat. Two proud Celtic men.

I am an advocate for catholic schools. I am an advocate for education. I believe that the church should be in the face of councils and the government because they are slashing resources to schools. I believe that the trade unions involved in the education of children Unite/Nasuwt/Unison/EIS should be bringing their collective weight to bear on the people responsible for the cuts to education services. Our children should feel safe and supported regardless of the school they go to.

My apologies. I have obviously misunderstood what I have been told regarding the funding of denominational schools in England. I have only been here 14 years and at nearly 70 have not had direct contact with schools. I was only going with people saying that these schools had to pay for themselves. I WAS OBVIOUSLY WRONG AND HOPE READERS TAKE NOTE. I also seemed to have expressed myself badly regarding the non continuation of government funding for denominational schools. All I was trying to say was that the fact that government withdraws funding in Scotland does not mean that denominational schools can not continue to exist. I was arguing this against the proposition that the SNP for example would close Catholic schools. As for your arguments in support of continued funding, I agree with them wholeheartedly and humbly submit you have expressed the arguments way better than me. Once again, I sincerely apologise for my blunder and hope that the late hour and the frailties of age will be accepted as a poor excuse for not checking my facts. God bless and H H..

Ah-ha, the old schools debate……who gives a chookies…..try this one then. I was brought up as RC but since whenever believe that whatever someone believes then thats up to them. For me, if there is a god he/she lives solely in your soul….anyhows back to my point, since today was a fantastic sunny day here in Paisley I took my eight year old to Barshaw Park this afternoon as this park is normally a splendid piece of greenery at this time of the year. Half way thru our trek he quizzed me and innocently asked, “why do they men have red hands and all wear the same suits Daddy”……where to start….?

  10. I do realise that I am far from in the majority here but COME ON SCOTLAND. £2.50 a Scotland win at 9/2! 3 or more goals, £5 at 1/1. Where’s that whiskey…?

  14. Rangers in crisis: Contract shows Stefan Klos paid same as David Beckham

May 26 2012 Exclusive by Colin Duncan

THE full extent of Rangers’ excesses during Sir David Murray’s reign were laid bare last night.

Record Sport can reveal documentation which shows Stefan Klos was paid more than £8million over four and half years at Ibrox.

The keeper received a basic salary of £4.5m, a loyalty bonus of £1m, win and appearance money totalling £500,000 and raked in £2m from the EBT scheme making him one of the world’s highest-paid footballers at that time.

The German’s pay packet was almost on a par with those of David Beckham, Steve McManaman and Brazilian superstar Ronaldo.

Klos is back in the spotlight as the astonishing scale of the tax avoidance scheme which has brought the club to the brink of collapse was exposed.

The Ibrox hero, who made more than 200 appearances for the club between 1998 and 2007, was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Employee Benefit Trusts which are threatening to destroy the club’s 140-year history.

The vast sums of cash paid to more than 80 members of staff over and above their normal salaries are at the root of the Big Tax Case which could see Rangers hit with a £75m fine.

Klos was the third highest earner from the EBT scheme behind former team skipper Barry Ferguson and Murray, the man who introduced the controversial tax trust.

Murray was paid £6.3m during his period at the Ibrox helm, Ferguson raked in £2.5m while the German keeper had £2m paid into an offshore account between December 1998 and June 2003.

A copy of Klos’s contract, obtained by Record Sport and which was lodged with the SPL, details his amazing renumeration package – but there is no mention on the document about an EBT.

The terms of the former Borussia Dortmund keeper’s deal highlight the astronomical amounts Murray was splashing out in a bid to bring the best players from around Europe to Glasgow.

Ronald de Boer, Arthur Numan, Tore Andre Flo and Dado Prso were lured on similar packages as Rangers beat off stiff competition for their signatures.

In the current climate where mind-boggling contracts are the norm in most of Europe’s top leagues the money paid to Klos does not seem to be unduly excessive.

However, back then the £2m a year he coined in at Rangers put him on a par with the world’s elite.

According to Forbes magazine in 2001, McManaman was listed as high as sixth on the list of highest earning footballers on the planet after earning £9m in his four seasons with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo was the world’s best paid player at the time although the £5m he earned in a year at Inter Milan was largely made up of advertising and sponsorship.

Beckham, who was still with Manchester United at the time, had an annual salary of £3.6m but again a large portion of that came from independent endorsements and not from the Old Trafford club.

  15. theweegreenman – whilst I confess to have no great love for Levein, Nevin, BBC, ESPN or shortbread, the fact remains that I was born in Scotland and whether I like it or not I am Scottish. Therefore, when it comes to international football for me it’s Scotland or nothing. So, even though the USA are playing in the hoops, tonight it’s Scotland for me. Especially, come on for Broonie and Charlie.

  16. Blue Avengers are raging after BBC revelations

By Tam Cowan on May 26, 12 07:20 AM in

On the back of the TV event of the year, I’ve worked out why Rangers are keen to sign ex-Hearts bruiser Ian Black.

They want to set him on David Murray, Craig Whyte and Duff and Phelps.

Tell you what, if Murray is stripped of his knighthood (ie. Sircumcised) any chance we could award it to Mark Daly for the funniest hour of telly since An Audience With Billy Connolly?

Everybody in Scotland must have seen the BBC documentary (well, everyone except the SFA’s chief executive Stewart “Arsene” Regan) and it was billed as “a story of hubris, negligence and greed”.

Bollocks! This was a tantalising tale of Joanna Lumley, a pipe-smoking porn star and Prince Albert of Monaco.

Oh and let’s not forget Rangers fanatic Sammy Paterson. I don’t think Messrs Murray, Whyte or Duff and Phelps (aka Haud It and Daud It) will be popping into his garage anytime soon to get their brakes checked!

So much for all that tosh about Sir Dave (aka The Dupe of Edinburgh) being taken for a ride by Craigy Whyte.

It’s becoming increasingly clear the only people who’ve been duped throughout this sorry saga are Sammy the mechanic and all his fellow Rangers supporters.

Although it could be worse, Gers fans. At least you don’t support Hibs.

If the authorities bow to public pressure and strip Rangers of titles they’ve won, do you realise how many extra shifts poor Sammy will have to work to get those tattoos surgically removed?

Murray had vehemently denied dishing out double contracts during his 23-year spell at Ibrox but the BBC claimed at least 53 players and staff received “side letters” not lodged with the SFA or SPL. Oops!

No wonder the club now finds itself in such a hellish financial mess when you look at the amazing sums of money dished out to duds. Kevin Muscat (remember him?) trousered a cool £1million.

And Dan Eggen (who didn’t even play a single game for Rangers) picked up a tasty £68,000.

And no wonder Murray set up the EBTs in the first place – it was revealed he personally creamed in £6.3million. Lovely!

The Beeb documentary also claimed he borrowed money to buy Rangers. At least Whyte used his own pound coin!

Sir Dave’s reputation now lies in tatters but, hey, even his biggest critics must admire the guy for having a crack at the scrumptious Joanna Lumley.

Unfortunately, it seems the lovely Ms Lumley didn’t think Murray was, ahem, absolutely fabulous and a succulent lamb dinner was off the menu.

Even though, as I can exclusively reveal, Dave offered to splash out a tenner for every fiver spent by her fellow suitors.

After this bizarre little gem was revealed in midweek, please tell me the Rangers fans won’t now boycott old repeats of The New Avengers on UK Gold?

PS. I’ve just been offered a job by UK Gold. I start five years ago.

PPS. Make no mistake, if a Rangers Newco is admitted to the SPL, the Aberdeen fans are deadly serious about a boycott.

Why do you think they spent so much of last season practising for it?

Meanwhile, congratulations to Pa Kujabi for breaking Danny Swanson’s record as Scottish football’s biggest ever big girl’s blouse.

Last Saturday I revealed the Dundee United midfielder wore gloves at Fir Park on May 12.

However, a full seven days later the Hibs “player” was also sporting a pair of woolly mittens in the Scottish Cup Final … along with a short-sleeved shirt!

And they say footballers are thick?

We all know the infamous cup final tug on the jersey was outside the box but Kujabi surely deserved a red card for that outrageous fashion faux pas?
