    Proud bhoy 8.10

    We have spent millions on

Rasmussen , Murphy, Fortune,Miku, Lassad,Bangura and now Balde.

Meanwhile a proven SPL striker, great workrate & attitude, Celtic supporter, is allowed to go to Derby for £750k. But he’s Scottish and played in SPL so obviously isn’t on our radar.

Sometimes we should be looking closer to home rather than chasing potential diamonds abroad.

We shouldn’t be playing pre season friendlies until the players have had a proper pre season training behind them to build core fitness. Then we should have a couple of behind closed door games to work on match fitness. Then, and only then we should be playing 3 or 4 pre season games ahead of the real thing. Difficult given the season now not ending for some until June and CL qualifiers in mid July but maybe we should have had players back even earlier to work on fitness.

Agree with you, injuries are a concern.

Just keep rolling the dice Celtic, keep gambling and hoping.

There’s £4million of the Wanyama money gone already, before the club has even received any of it.

£4million on who/what? It is not for me to say, because i don’t know a thing about the two new footballers that the club has signed, never heard of them.

What do you do with the other £8.5million?

Buy another eight players for £1million a piece,or even another four players at a cost of £2million each?

Just hoping to find another Victor, and sell him on for a big profit. The signing of Victor was the exception to the rule,it is a false economy in my opinion,as all the other chumps that Kayal listed above cost the equivalent of what funds Wanyama’s sale has generated.

Proven is the key word here.

Would you rather buy ten unproven, potential chumps for £1million each,or buy in two quality footballers at £5million apiece, players that have proven themselves to be able to perform on the big stage?

If you want class Neil – Go and sign Aiden McGeady.

It should be your call, for once.

    Philbhoy – It’s just the beginning! @ 20:46,

There were many posts last evening concerning the Brutal Bavarian Beating. Not picking up yours for any other reason that it gets to the heart of the matter.

“How many of tonight’s team will start in the CL qualifier?”

Quite a few I would think as there were a lot of first team players out there.

Also if we accept Wanyama and possibly Hooper will be leaving then.

~ Matthews, Ambrose, Brown, Ledley, Forrest ~

Are the only guys likely to come in, when you take into account:

    a) Some of those ghuys wouldn’t be everyone’s first choice

    b) Some of those ghuys might not be available.

You can see we need to rely on many of the bhoys who played last evening.

    Also

I’m sure Lenny expected some of his new signings, some of his youngsters and some of last years first team putting down a marker for a claim for a berth in those games.

The Game and Performance cannot be seen as other than a grave disappointment.

And there`s music in my ears

    Say, is Vic there ?

I hear ringing in the air

    So I answer the phone

    A voice comes over clear

    Say, is Vic there ?

  7. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

I kno these are just friendlies but they must have some purpose-

-get the players match fit/match sharp for the challenges ahead?

-try out new formations and tactics?

-get our new signings bedded in?

-raise the Club profile in Europe and other markets?

I don’t think we’ve ticked any of these boxes so far.

  8. 16 roads – Neil Lennon walks on water.,

The difficulty with that approach is attracting £5M players to Scottish football. Anyone of that standard will already be on the radar of EPL clubs who can offer much bigger wages and a better league.

Would an Aiden McGeady (or equivalent) come to Celtic over Everton or Cardiff? The status of Scottish football right now is that our selling points to potential recruits are European football and proximity to the English market. That will attract a Wanyama, a young player looking for a stepping stone, but not too many established international players.

  9. 16 roads. Be very carefull. Some people will say you are being anti Celtic

    Agree with you 100% mate.

  10. 16 roads - Neil Lennon walks on water. on

Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon – That is a good point.

I dare say that we could afford to sign Aiden, but then again his wages would be a stumbling block anyway.

  11. …..and if he has not, why so many references suggesting that he has? Not lazy journalism, surely. The pigs and humans in Animal Farm were indistinguishable by the book`s end. It would be sad to see CQN going the same way.

I am disappointed that big Victor is leaving us but 12.5 Million is good business we should be fairly comfortable financialy after the sale and including champions league monies from last season.I like others on the blog feel we need to bring in two experienced tried and tested first team players a creative midfielder and a striker as Gary Hooper is stringing us along and if the right bid comes in he will in my opinion move on.I am concerned that we do not just pocket the money and try to go with what we have got as again in my opinion we have to many inexperienced players in our squad. Well good luck to big Victor with his new club he was a pleasure to watch.H.H.

  14. Livid. Just heard about the 5:15 on kick off for the league opener. Having bought my season ticket that’s a game I can’t now get to. Why do Celtic treat overseas fans like sh!t ?

  15. A big difference in all three games played is how quickly our opponents broke from the back compared to us.

The wide men had pace and could shoot and were played into spaces that our front men simply did not have.

They were played in because the ball was moved very quickly from back to front. If an opponent was closed down and played the ball back the receiving player was looking to play the ball forward whereas in a similar situation our default tactic is to play the ball either back to goalie or more often across the back four.

This takes time and in that time space gets closed down not opened up. We did get a very good intricately worked goal in a tight space but contrast that with the number of breaks into space our opponents had.

That was due to a midfield with no physical or athletic constituents. No Brown, Ledley or Wanyama closing down.

Add to their absence the obvious fitness difference and you can see why we got turned over but this would only be an excuse. We need to get the ball upfield faster than we do and we need forwards with pace and strength to get into the spaces that our “do not risk surrendering possession at all costs” attiitude fails to create that also causes massive problems when we do lose possesion going forward.

Given that the right ingredients ( that our oppoents had) of fitness and speed of movement were missing as were players who had some of those qualities I would not be downhearted but certainly a bit concerned that we looked anything but a solid never mind good outfit.

However that can turn around quickly when that plateau of fitness and consistency of selection is reached and right now we scrabbling to get to that level.

  16. DBBIA @ 09:46,

Quite – Also how many players that we are scouting, whose agents have made them aware thought they’d take the game in and see if Scotland is a suitable destination on the next step of their career.

    Jungle Jim @ 09:58,

Wanyama was not even expected to join the squad on the Tour he has not played one minutes game time.

I’d love him to stay but he’s not the answer to last nights shambles.

    Hail! Hail!

  17. Tv dictates football kick off times these days – that’s a reality we have to live with as long as the game needs tv money. Games are scheduled for the convenience of the viewing audience, not paying fans.

I do find it odd that our first game is an evening rather than a lunch time kick off though. And with a game the night before too. The idea always used to be that the champions played the first match – as is common in a lot of other sports.

  18. Estadio Nacional on

If its Southampton Wanyama goes to its not a good move for future Wanayamas we are looking to sign.

I take it we sign players as a stepping stone to top EPL clubs, guess Southampton do the same, some players might think why go to Celtic (of course we know) then a Southampton/Swansea then maybe have the chance of a big EPL team when they could just go straight to a Southampton/Swansea.

You could argue exposure in the EPL could be as valuable as the CL exposure we can offer.

  19. One wee point about last night’s shambles. Better we have our “Artmedia” in a pre season friendly than in a CL qualifying game.

The Finnish and Swedish opponents we met last season were pretty much the equivalents of our opponents last night.

These games are needed to get us ready for the level we will meet in qualifying.

  20. I didn’t see the game so depending on listening to others views. To lose six goals at anytime is not acceptable but some were saying that it could’ve been 10/12 if this is true well that is really disturbing. Also Lenny is saying we ended up with 3/4 young players on the pitch, did our opponents not end up with their second eleven on the pitch.

Cliftonville game is massive ,they are no mugs.

  21. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

    chairbhoy

I was unaware until this morning of the lengthy injury list to our first teamers, including all that you mentioned.

The CL games against Cliftonville might be the platform for a youngster or two to stake a claim.

Providing Neil picks them and providing they play in their most suited position.

  22. Gordon

The game needs fans more than tv money ? A better man than myself once said football without fans is nothing. I think Celtic need reminding of that. Yeah it was the league’s decision but it’s up to Celtic to fight our corner.

If this ridiculous kick off time is going to be a feature of the season then I may as well hand back my season book. I work at 6am every Sunday.

  23. Auldheid @ 10.09

You are right, it was the (lack of) midfield that was the problem last night, especially in the second half when we had a few lightweight players and a headless chicken, who is allegedly going to replace Wanyama.

I thought Neil would have learned from the away games in the CL, but no, he plays an outdated 4-4-2 (I believe Roy Hodgson is the only top coach who still uses this system). We need to study what Bayern and Dortmund do, we need 2 holding midfielders and we need width.

I only hope we find a replacement for Big Vic pronto. And I think we should have signed a replacement for Scott Brown, whose fitness is a huge doubt.

  24. Estadio Nacional on

CTV mentioned last night that Gunther were two weeks ahead of us in preperation for the season.

    Gunter’s first game: 21st July

    Celtic next game: 17th July

    Hmmmm

  25. An Dun,

Don’t disagree – the model we are working to is one where the tail wags the dog. The smaller clubs need the tv cash much more than we do in relative terms. They will never make as much from fans.

We suffer again from being the one big fish in the pond. Time to find another pond.

  26. Joe fillip. Like the idea. I share them. But that would mean all of big Vic transfer fee going to Neil

Not going to happen. No ambition

  27. Most of big Vic’s money has been spent on a non goal scoring forward ( have we not learnt)

    And another project defender

  28. Estadio Nacional on

As I know Vic Wanyama is an avid CQN reader/lurker I googled Southampton to help him pick his shirt number for next season…

They have rarely appeared in Europe, a few appearances in the Cup Winners Cup, whatever that was… and have no up coming CL games.

Best pick 76 they year they won the FA Cup, their only major trophy.

  29. Fair enough Gordon. I’m just severely pissed off having read about the time change this morning. It looks like I’ll now have to stomach Billy Dodds and Andy Walker. Gees just the thought of it…

  30. Several posters claiming that midfield was our strongest area recently, I’m not so sure, Beram Kayal is the only central midfielder at the club and central midfield without Victor leaves us with the same problem as last year, Joe Ledley for me can do a job in there but I thought his best play way with Izzy on the left, Scott Brown fitness aside does his best work on the right, James Forrest also right, Sammi left, Dylan unproven in the top games, Tom Rogic looks like he has the skills and the eye for a clever pass but also looks unprepared for the rough and tumble of central midfield, Efe alternatively has looked good and terrible in there, so with out a solid defence midfielder who can tackle and pass the ball in front of our defence we are looking at some squeaky bums this season.

With our growing injury list next weeks game against Cliftonville looks like we might be fielding an unfamiliar team. let’s hope that they can gel on the night and get us the result we need to take us to Ireland with some ease, I think they can.

Sad to see Victor go if he has in fact signed for Southampton and also pretty disappointed he couldn’t wait a little bit longer for his “dream move to the EPL” but there you go.

I really hope we don’t make Beram Kayal the new Sammi and get on his case every time he plays to fufill the need for a scapegoat, a couple of seasons ago he was the second coming on here and I believe he needs our support to rebuild his Celtic career after injury and loss of confidence if Sammi can do it then so can he.

It’s going to be an interesting week to see if Celtic have got someone in mind to come in to bolster the midfield, with only Kris Commons as a creative outlet we’re looking flat and predictable and as I have said before what do you do with a Bhoy like Charlie??

Thank feck the season is about to begin, close season is a nightmare..

    Hail Hail.

Miki 67 if yer lurking all the best mate and you too Jackie Mac just read back and saw your post…

  31. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Our non goal scoring forwards do score goals.

Hooper scores goals, Stokes [ when he stays onside] scores goals, Sammi scores goals for fun in Europe.

    Forrest scores goals

    Commons scores goals.

And who knows, Balde may score goals as well.

  32. Really starting to get concerned about our first qualifier. Cliftonville are a team we should be beating but can any of us say it would be a surprise if we go out in the first qualifying round? Even if we do get through we’ve got two more rounds against (almost certainly) tougher opponents.

We’re missing potentially the entire spine of the side through injury, transfer and lack of preparation.

Van Dijk from what I’ve seen is good on the ball and has the size and pace but is casual and let’s his man sneak in behind. Balde looks ‘raw’ alright and is never a goalscorer. I’ve heard coaches at CP have used less kind language than raw. For me we’ve signed a played on athletic ability rather than talent.

The league should eventually take care of itself but I worry about our European chances.

  33. 79caps,

You make a great point about the 442 system.

For the life of me I can’t think of a top team in world football that plays 442. It’s so outdated it’s archaic!!

All the best club or international teams play with one mobile striker. Usually it’s a 4231 variation.

Really can’t see why we persist with this.

We need to use the Wanyama money to buy a replacement defensive midfielder but also a creative/ left midfielder!!

  34. Morning/afternoon all.

Becoming slightly concerned at our injury list – and the competitive season hasn’t even started yet.

Who will be available for the Cliftonville game?

    HH!!

  35. Be sad to see Big Vic leave but it’s excellent business if the reported figures are correct. It’s going to seriously weaken us. An ideal replacement would be James McCarthy at Wigan. Playing in the Championship, 2 years left on his contract, Celtic fan, Champions League football, here is hoping we show a bit of ambition and sign him.
