  1. Good morning friend from an overcast but still dry and very warm East Kilbride.

And so endeth my last weather report of the 2012-2013 season as early this afternoon me and Mrs Baldie are leaving for our 4-years-in-the-saving-up Silver Wedding (which is actually next month) Anniversary holiday – 3 nights in Dubai then 11 in The Maldives. Life is indeed good!

So, in traditional CQN style, a quick question. Does anybody know any where in Kuramathi Island that’s likely to have the BBC2 Scotland digital feed for the Cliftonville games? ;-)

Right, on with the ironing and packing and, of course, lurikin’

Take care of the Scottish weather till I get back please.

  2. Morning,

Sack the board! Sack Neil Lennon! We want a new bus!

    Meanwhile…

Scottish football’s record transfer is set to be completed on Wednesday with Victor Wanyama poised to finalise a stunning £12.5million move to Southampton.

Explains his disappearance from the team last night.

Very, very poor performance last night against Greuther Further. The only discernible positive we can take out of it IMO is our second goal whichcameafter a beautiful move and we almost walked the ball into the net.

Kayal became involved in feuds with several opponents and does not look like a ready made replacement for Victor. I hope Neil has a Plan B on that front. The defence were all over the place and the youngsters contributed very little. In fact we were lucky to be honest that it wasn’t 10 or 12. They hit the post and the bar with Our goalie well beaten. Many of our players pulled out of challenges and suffered because of it. Kayal won a fantastic challenge in the first half when the odds were not in his favour but missed the next tackle and took out an opponent after the ball was well away and so the feuds began.

I know it was only a friendly designed to improve our fitness. I’m not so sure how far that aim was achieved. It was an extremely poor performance by Celtic and it looked as if several players, Van Dijk, Izzaguirre and Commons took knocks. Probably Kayal did too. Celtic had a sizeable support in the crowd and they mixed well with the German team whose main strip is broad green and white hoops and whose emblem is the shamrock.

Anyway when Neil puts out his full strength team let’s hope we are ready. Sorry for the negative nature of the post.

Rangers investor Kieran Prior: I’m dismayed and horrified over the latest Ibrox boardroom reshuffle

INVESTOR Kieran Prior bought 1.2 per cent of the club last month and has been taken aback by the latest power play in Govan.

Prior: “This has more twists and turns than a Dan Brown novel but I’ll continue to ask questions and be a pain in the a***”

RANGERS investor Kieran Prior has reacted with “dismay and horror” to the latest shake up in the Ibrox boardroom.

Bus company boss James Easdale was appointed a non-executive director yesterday.

And that came just hours after former chairman Malcolm Murray and Phil Cartmell, his fellow non-executive director, left the board.

Former City of London whizzkid Prior, who purchased 1.2 per cent of the club in a £400,000 deal last month, fears Murray resigned his position.

Former Goldman Sachs trader Prior is also deeply concerned at the departure of Cartmell, the placeman of brokers Cenkos, who have now been replaced by “boutique investment bank” Strand Hanson.

Prior said: “My reaction to the latest boardroom announcements are twofold – dismay and horror.

“Rangers have changed their broker of choice from Cenkos, an established and respected firm, to one which I have never heard of.

“Unassuming fans might think it a non-event but the presence of Cenkos would have assured investors both present and future.

“This is the brokerage that brought Rangers to market last year and provides us with a heritage and access to capital markets.

“I only hope Strand Hanson are not yes men. Charles Green has a lock-in period on his shares of two years. I would trust the new brokers would not move from that.

“James Easdale and his brother Sandy have a reported six per cent stake in Rangers, which I would dispute.

“I’m sure James is successful in terms of logistics and transport but I don’t see how someone with such a small percentage of shares should be rushed on to the board.

“Why not wait until the agm at the end of August? My fear is certain parties are trying to stack the deck in their favour ahead of the agm.”

Prior bought his stake in the club with a view to “looking under the bonnet”.

He said: “This has more twists and turns than a Dan Brown novel but I’ll continue to ask questions and be a pain in the a***.”

Meanwhile, Gers keeper Cammy Bell has survived a major injury scare in the final training session of the Highland Tour.

The summer signing from Kilmarnock suffered a knee injury during training but was cleared after treatment.

Rangers are also hoping to extend Bilel Mohsni’s trial and include him in Saturday’s friendly at Bristol City.

Not many positives can be given about last night except it was another run out to get fitness up. I lose no sleep over pre-season friendlies.

I for one hope that Beram recovers his original form with Celtic this season.

So hoping for The OriginalBeram Bhoy.

Although I am disappointed that Vic is leaving.

On a strange note four teams from the Nigerian League have been suspended for participating in games that ended 67-0 and 59-0 (or something like that). These pre-season friendlies can be a bummer!:-) No report of whether two of the teams had no Efe defence.

  7. Celtic’s main problem last season was a lack of creativity in midfield. We won the league in a canter and won the Cup as well but very rarely in style. Power, depth of squad, organisation all saw us through but very rarely good attacking, creative football. Our top scorer in a league we won easily only scored 19 goals from 32 games, poor finishing or lack of chances? When Kris Commons doesn’t play, or is off form, we have no one who can open up a defence other than with pace down the flanks (Forrest, when fit, Izzy, Matthews, Lustig, even Sammi on occasions)or deep diagonal crosses from Mulgrew. Looks like no change for this season.

  8. Eurochamps67 on

    Kalimera, my friends.

Into week two of the vacation is usually the time for me to extend my horizons by having the “day trip oot”. We’re I down in Sharm I might totally ruin my day by taking the tour bus to the magnificent Pyramids of Giza via various tour sponsor’s assortment of fleecing agencies, stores and market places, where every sense is assaulted and all manner of ways of removing cash from your wallet are invented. Five dollars for a bottle of water FFS.

A visit to Mexico would neccesitate a trip away from the luxuries of Cancun to experience the awesome Mayan ruins up ar Chichen Itza. Unfortunately again here the local tour vendors have a well established coterie of contacts who have no doubt paid handsomely to be given first dibs on the tourist dollar. In Peru they same situation occurs if one wished to visit the splendour of Machu Picchu.

In Leros we have a visit to the white isle of Mastahari. An uninhabited sliver of shimmering white rock, barely cresting the crystal clear water of the Aegean, accessible only by boat to about 150 metres, thereafter, if you wish to set foot on the white rocks, you swim the last part. You are informed about this part until you arrive off shore. Once on the island it is impossible to stay still, such is the heat reflected back of the white rock. It is however stunningly beautiful, nothing there but white rock, blue sea, oh and a few of those millionaire yachts.

The conveyance to Mastihari is a 40 foot yacht, the Barbarrossa, owned and piloted by Nikita, a golden brown, bleached blonde Summa style haired, man of indeterminate age. He is a clone of Iggypop, save for the hair colouring. Given that we are visiting an uninhabited island, with zero provisions, the ship is not the only thing Nikita provides, at a price. It is a wonderful experience made more wonderous by some of your fellow passengers.

Now not everyone is a strong swimmer, so to encourage everyone into the water, Nikita, employs the age old routine of chucking a few bottles of cheap plonk into the sea for us to retrieve. Obviously the young team have an advantage but if there is alcohol involved then I can become as competitive as BlantyreKev and Taggsybhoy on a golf course, so I am in there. That’s when I met him. The tour de force that was/is Paddy Hanrahan or Hanagan. Dublin born, Paddy appeared beside in the water, fully clothed, with buoyancy aid on, the lure of the plonk was just too great for him, even though he couldn’t swim nor have any chance of retrieving the vino on its way to the seabed.

We clambered together back on board, introduced ourselves to each other and MrsEC67 to Rosé, Paddy’s wife. The trip from then on became an almost existential experience, drink was involved, Nikita’s taking rocketed, Paddy pole dancing round the engine powered ship’s redundant mast among other things. Paddy and Rose lived in Oxford. Paddy hailed from a famous Turf Accountant family in Dublin and as I swoped stories of my youth in Dublin’s Malahide Road at my Grandad’s fish shop and fish and chip place, that went to become Beshoffs, we became firm friends.

Paddy was a lawyer, very very smart, but knew little of the normal world, didn’t watch TV, barely knew of the works of the Beatles for example but amazing charming and funny but a total and utter pi@@head. He spoke like the Paul Whitehouse character on the Fast Show, “we were very, very drunk”, but knew nothing of him, which made him even funnier. Obviously I made several Fast Show references for his wife Rose, who could hardly speak as she did know of the show.

On our return to Leros we visited my good friend Panagotis’ taverna for supper. With no sign of Paddy’s alcohol intake abating Panagotis gave me the keys to the taverna To Pigadi and asked me to lock up when we had finished. It was 3.30am before Paddy allowed me to carry him home. Not all day trips are to be avoided.

  9. Is there any chance that Kieran Prior is a double agent? Love his exposure of the murky dealings of Sevco from the perspective of a critical friend.

  10. Friendly or not we shouldnt concede 6 goals against anyone.

We have short pre season so i dont think we should be messing with team too much.

Wilson virgil and french guy were the 3 main centre halfs.. Start with 2 then rotate at half time.

Im extremley concerned about goals this year, unfair to judge balde after so little time but can we really afford for him to have 2/3months to settle ?

Surely the money is there to bring in proven goalscorer to help hooper out. We have lost miku and lassad so a proven scorer should be within our means. Not one with potential.

Potential category is filled already with watt and atajic.

Im hoping george and henderson are sent on loan until january to keep there progress going.

I think it was Bournesouprecipe who made the point the other day about having our pockets picked in midfield. That was the main fault last night. Very few of our players managed to retain the ball when tackled. In almost 100 % of the challenges we lost possession and were caught out because we were going forward. Players scrambled back to cover very often to no avail. Lenny needs to work on this aspect of our game more than any other IMO.

  13. On a brighter note the orange order are not allowed to march past ardoynd in the return leg. Historic decision .

    Good morning CQNers,

Last night’s experiment of 3 defenders who are just about on nodding terms with each other was cruelly exposed and I’m sure this Friday night’s last friendly will see a totally different approach taken.

Its disappointing to see such a score line but with time at a premium its understandable we’re having to test new tactics and new players in public so I think its only right NL gets some latitude.

These series of friendlies have however thrown up a conundrum, Charlie Mulgrew, Charlie Mulgrew what are we to do with you?

  15. This is not a brand new team that has to gel. They know how they will play next week if picked. All about fitness and avoiding injury.

The Germans pushed on second half when Celtic had moved down a gear seeing the game out and trying to avoid injuries.

Really not concerned about a freak pre season result.

  16. Morning all. Glorious morning down here again. Hopefully, it might remain for a good wee while.

Slept on last night’s performance. Feel now it was abject. Can’t see any real positives. The only thing that cheers me is that Radio Scotland are obviously enjoying our discomfort but what does that say about the rest of Scotland, especially their deid team fae Govan?

  17. Good Morning to all, particularly to Miki67,hope you have a good day pal, stay strong, we all love you. Still recovering after yesterdays match, I’m in the camp of those who believe that no Celtic side should be tanked like that by a second rate team regardless of pre season or not. Having said that the result doesn’t matter, its over, lets move on. Like proudbhoy I’m concerned re lack of goalscorer, Balde might come right but it will take time, Hoops “injured” or is it a convenient excuse to keep him sidelined if he is definitely offski. Hopefully we have enough to get over Cliftonville but there will be tougher battles we need reinforcements.

  18. Ellboy - I am Neil Lennon, YNWA. on

Celtic’s major problem for the past few seasons has been a serious inaficency to keep possession for sustained periods of time. Either the players are not good enough (unlikely) or they are being coached poorly. Can’t see it being the former, as even the poorest of players can pass the ball to one another. See Greuther as exhibit A. We’re too good in a marathon for the SPL and have performed heroics playing counter attacking football in Europe. Would just like to see us keep the ball for longer periods and not so one dimensional. Loathed to criticise Neil as he’s done a great job but perhaps a more continental approach would suit us better in the long term.

Furious Celtic fans lash out against Saturday night football

    10 Jul 2013 08:03

THE new league campaign will start at 5.15pm on a Saturday for Celtic, leaving some of the club’s travelling support stranded in Scotland.

Iain Blair: “At times people are going to be more happy and on other occasions people are going to be less happy”

A CELTIC fans group have reacted with fury to the new SPFL’s decision to move their first league game of the season to a 5.15pm kick-off on a Saturday.

The Affiliation of Registered Celtic Supporters’ Clubs are adamant switching the start of the champions’ campaign – on the day the league flag is unfurled – to suit TV is a slap in the face for season-ticket holders.

Celtic were due to play Ross County at 3pm on Saturday, August 3, but the clash is to now start at 5.15pm on a weekend when the league will begin on a Friday night as new boys Partick Thistle entertain Dundee United in front of the new BT Sport cameras.

Anne McElhinney, of the Celtic supporters’ group, insisted the move completely disregards the needs and wants of ordinary fans.

She said: “Once again there has been a disregard for the paying public and at a time when everyone should be trying to encourage people to go to matches.

“It is ridiculous they are putting on games at times that inconvenience people so much.

“It seems the authorities are far more interested in bending over backwards to help the TV companies and are disregarding those who buy season books. But there is a danger TV companies will kill football because they’re making it harder for folk to get to games.

“We have a lot of Irish fans who won’t be able to get back home on a Saturday. But it’s not just our fans – the Ross County supporters won’t get back home until about midnight.”

Affiliation spokesman Kevin Graham told Record Sport his group will be asking for a dialogue with the SPFL over the issue.

SPFL secretary Iain Blair said: “We are trying to combine what are sometimes competing requirements between the fans and those who pay for their TV subscriptions, which work their way through to the clubs in broadcast fees – and also the requirements of the local communities, which are primarily handled by the police.

“So it is a balancing act and it is likely at times people are going to be more happy and on other occasions people are going to be less happy. But it is good for the game we have different broadcasters paying to show Scottish football.”

    HH

Makes it worse for overseas fans too.

Modern 2.15am kick offs are rubbish.

  25. I would like Celtic to use the Wanyama money to buy ourselves out of the TV contract and launch our own channel on sky and have regular kick off times. I would gladly pay them the money and you would probably increase the number of fans travelling away and the home attendance.

  26. Well jimbo my water also comes through pipes and I keep my milk in the fridge as well, no tea in the morning for me, just porridge but it is absolutely a gorgeous day in Costa Clonmel. I’m off to the Hospital with Mrs. corkcelt in a half hour or so, nothing serious I may add. I concur that Celtic are playing rubbish and the spate of injuries and offskis are worrying. Sometimes boring can be o.k. but if its getting to you substitute coffee for the tea and see how you go. On a more serious note to those with genuine problems and worries I too send my best wishes, hoping you get good news today Jackie Mac, best wishes to Miki67 & all CQN’ers dealing with Health issues.

  27. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

    Whit?

The Season should start with the raising of the Flag at the home of the Champions.

Once that is done then games can kick off.

We are selling what’s left of the game for a TV deal that’s worth buttons.

  28. Rather trust Neil Lennon’s opinion than the yoo-ha’s on here who seemed to have came late to the CQN party…

But Lennon said: “My message to the fans is

not to panic. If you see the team we finished

with, we had Dylan McGeouch, Callum Waters

and Liam Henderson – and some of them were

    playing out of position.

    “We had a patched-up team so it’s not a

major concern to me. Yes, there was a bit of

naivety but for some of them it was their first

    trip away with us.

“I was really pleased with the first half and

there was a lot of good stuff.

“And I thought both of their penalties were a

    bit dubious.

“But we’ll be fine. My main concern is we’re

picking up a lot of injuries and I’m having to

use the kids more than I really want to.

“We’ve got Scott Brown, Joe Ledley, Adam

Matthews and James Forrest who have hardly

kicked a ball this trip. Charlie Mulgrew has

now picked up a strain and we’re hoping Virgil

van Dijk will be OK after coming off as well.

“But Joe Ledley and Adam Matthews are

struggling and it’s debatable whether we’d

want to throw them into a Champions League

    qualifier.

“We’re stretched and it’s taking its toll a bit.

    “It’s a slight concern because I don’t know

what team I’m going to have available for the

    game in Belfast.”

Lennon tried a three-man defence but reverted

back to a flat back four after half-time.

Neither Kelvin Wilson nor Steven Mouyokolo

impressed and Lennon revealed Nigerian star

Efe Ambrose isn’t due back to the club until

    July 15.

He said: “Efe didn’t finish until late June and

we knew he wouldn’t be involved in this trip or

the first Champions League game. We’ve also

had to send Tony Watt home with a back

    strain.

“I had a look at the three at the back but it

was Virgil and Steven’s first time together so

    they looked a bit loose.”
