Totally agree. The last goal was laughable. A cross into the box between Lustig and McGeoch, no centre backs to be found, Zaluska helpless, and the sub scores again. Cue heads down by Lustig and a totally demoralized McGeoch, who made no effort whatsoever to interfere with the German.

Take a look at their second goal from a corner. What on earth was Charlie doing? He just ignored the ball, and it was right beside him. What on earth was Forster doing? He could easily have come for it and grabbed it.

    Just inexplicable.

    Totally agree.

Normally I do not worry about pre-season but I worry that the attitude of the players( and Lennie) if they are accepting a drubbing irrespective of game importance.

At the end of last Season as we lost silly points, although it did not hurt the final outcome, a malaise was creeping in to the team mentality.

The much quoted phrase was ” Boys running on empty, too many games” now after pre season defeats ” Boys rusty, need games for sharpness”!! Cant have it all ways as its only about 7 weeks since Cup Final which we presume had all players at optimum fitness in preparation for selection.

Imagine running a multi million business when the key employees return having forgotten how to perform their tasks to the acceptable level per their salary.

It would not be tolerated in business, and this IS a business.

Celtic have rightly made capital of our reputation as a team, why then sell the hard won plaudits so cheaply.

    Forget the fitness…………ATTITUDE, ORGANISATION,DISCIPLINE,TACTICS.

Greuther Fuerth 6 Celtic 2: Lennon’s men humbled by second-tier German outfit

Celtic were handed a sobering 6-2 thrashing by German second division side Greuther Fuerth in their friendly at the Trolli Arena in Bavaria.

After suffering narrow defeats by Ukrainian side Sevastopol and Romanian outfit Cluj, Neil Lennon’s team were dismantled by the German outfit and were lucky not to suffer a heavier defeat.

In an open first half, Nikola Djurdjic grabbed a double for the home side, one with a contentious penalty, and Kevin Kraus scored another with Georgios Samaras and Mikael Lustig notching for the Parkhead men.

Numerous substitutions were made by both sides in the second half but it was Celtic who struggled to cope.

Dominick Drexler added a fourth after the break as the Scottish champions went to pieces with Baye Djiby Fall grabbing a fifth from the spot and a sixth near the end with a free header

Celtic play Union Berlin on Friday in their last pre-season fixture of their German tour before the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Northern Irish side Cliftonville next week and Neil Lennon will be looking for a vast improvement from his players.

The Hoops boss brought back several of his top men including Charlie Mulgrew, Emilio Izaguirre, Anthony Stokes and Samaras and it was the Greece striker who finished off a fine move in the third minute to give Celtic the lead.

Mulgrew’s curling cross from the left was met at the back post by Lustig who knocked it back in for the former Manchester City forward to almost casually knock in from eight yards.

Celtic looked in control but in the 10th minute Zoltan Stieber was allowed to get his cross in from the left and Djurdjic, who faced the Hoops in last season’s UEFA Champions League qualifier for Helsingborgs, volleyed low past Fraser Forster and into the corner of the net from 14 yards

The visitors fell behind in the 34th minute when Kraus moved unmarked in at the back post to knock a corner high into the net, making Forster’s fine save from Robert Zillner’s drive irrelevant.

Celtic responded and four minutes before the break fine play between Stokes and Samaras saw the Hoops duo work their way into the German side’s penalty area and when the ball fell into the path of Lustig the Sweden international had the easiest of tasks to slam the ball into the empty net.

It looked like the first half would end level but the home side were awarded a dubious penalty when the referee decided a free-kick from the edge of the box had struck an arm in the Celtic defensive wall and Djurdjic calmly sent Forster the wrong way from the spot.

Lukasz Zaluska, who replaced Forster at the interval, made several saves of varying quality as Greuther Fuerth looked purposeful at the start of the second half.

Celtic survived a few more scares before Drexler made it 4-2 in the 74th minute when he escaped the attention of an increasingly ropey Parkhead defence to guide the ball in from 14 yards.

Zaluska then watched a shot from Florian Trinks rattle his crossbar from 30 yard and Athanasios Petsos also struck woodwork but Lennon’s disjointed side were soon to suffer further punishment.

Fall scored confidently from the spot six minutes from time after another soft penalty was given when Hoops substitute Calum Waters was adjudged to have nudged Stephan Furstner inside the box, and there was time for the big striker to score with a header from close range to complete the rout and give Lennon food for thought ahead of the first European hurdle of the season.

My gripe goes back many years, I was in the old /new front stand ,when Tommy Callaghan was being sent out to warm up.It was one of those days we were struggling. The abuse that man took that day as he ran up and down just in front of me made me think. Im not saying it changed me, but what Ive never done ,is give a Celtic player the kind of criticism that some of they boys have had on here tonight. Ill talk about it in front of my son, my friends in the pub, but, at the end of the day, no matter what, for good or ill, we should get behind them.

Ive cheered for Paul McStay, as much as Ive cheered for Beram Kayal, as much for Wanye Biggins, as for Gary Hooper, what Im trying to say is, keep it real!

Good night and God Bless All, and aplogise to anyone Ive offended

    sad but true

  15. Don’t post often and coming on to this late. On my honeymoon but can’t help checking on news but we seem to be going nuts on the basis of a friendly! By all means moan in a proper game but this means bugger all-glorified training sessions. Love us to win every game but will take us being pumped now to win when there is points at stake.

  16. cliftonville celt from belfast on

    Evening everyone

Anyone with plans to travel to belfast for the c’ville game should be aware things might get a bit interesting here come the weekend. The coat trailing zombies are a wee bit upset tonight after being told they will not be allowed to march past ardoyne shops (you know the ones they are always on sky and normally have about 3 thousand Trevor’s shooting the locals !)

Some may think OK what’s this got to do with Celtic – but they are openly talking of going all drumcree about it on UTV pages and our team need to travel safely to solitude from their base on the wednesday with only the trevors to rely on for the teams main security !More importantly our travelling support need to be very aware of this when coming over next week.

Sorry Trevor’s otherwise known as RUC/PSNI good history with our fans ……NOT !!!!!!

The post match comments from Lenny, suggest he is concerned about who will be available over the next few weeks, and that tonight’s line up was about looking at formations for these games.

The limited / non appearances of Broony, Matthews, Ledley and Forrest suggest all are still carrying injuries from last season, which is concerning, particularly if we loose Victor and Hooper. Out of that lot are at least 4 ,possibly more, whom you would want to start in the 2nd and 3rd CL qualifiers ( assuming we get that far).

Much of our success last year in Europe was based around a well drilled, midfield who have more defensive than attacking qualities, coupled with good use of set pieces.

I realise I will be in a minority tonight, but, Kayal seemed to be the only midfielder who spent any time in his own half, or who put in any tackles , which makes him a convenient scapegoat as only man standing.

In previous seasons, Lenny hasn’t trusted Stokes domestically in big games or Commons in Europe, and as he tinkers to find the right formula, we may anticipate more of the same.

My only hope is that over the next few weeks, we can nurse back Brown and Ledley, for the ( he says optimistically) 2nd and 3rd Euro games, and perhaps, play Stokes wide right in away games , allowing Forrest to come on against 70 th minute tired legs.

This would allows us to retain the 442 structure that gave us our success last year in Europe.

  22. CRC-been engaged in honeymoonish activities but demanded time for Murray and odd footy browsing. Fast asleep so I’m safe!

I think if Forrest is in any way fit Lenny will play him regardless, just look at the Juve game.

I might be in the minority here, but I would play Charlie & Kelvin at CB with Lustig & Izzy, just leave the CB experiment until we get out of the CL qualifiers.

  25. It’s all so surreal……can that be real?

Iron out the wrinkles pre season….isn’t that how it’s supposed to go? ‘Cept we got mighty big Euro qualies hoverin’ over the horizon.

That’s really not so surreal. That’s the deal we need to seal, season in, season out, in this mad commercially driven game we’ve all got sucked into.

Just look at where it took TFOD just trying to hang on to our coat tails.

Mind you….THAT is really surrealy funny.
