Hearts resentment reservoir

581

If you do not have a knot in your stomach, you should.  Hearts managed to relegate themselves last season through inept performances against teams clearly below them in the food chain.  They upped their game against Hibs and (especially) Newco, posing questions that the Budgeocracy has yet to consider.  On Sunday, we face a team of usually-can’t-be-bothereds with a grudge.

In October, they started their Championship campaign by putting six goals past Dundee, whom they blame for siding with Peter Lawwell in the discussions that determined how last season’s league campaign would end.  Then they beat Hibs, who they can always be bothered to play, in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

The new stands at Tynecastle act as a reservoir of resentment and Celtic are top of their list.  Who else, other than their players, either managers, or the insightful new broom that was going to show football how it’s done in the business world, is there to blame for their relegation than Celtic.

And then there’s Eddie.  You and I didn’t really discuss this at the time.  A photo circulated showing the keeper took him out, but that was ‘fake news’ as it was not of the penalty incident in the 2019 final.  Hand on heart; I think we got away with one then.  A goal down in the second half, Odsonne Edouard took control; before you knew it, you were celebrating a Treble Treble.

I do not respect Heart of Midlothian FC whatsoever, but I respect any opponent who can so readily cultivate the unifying resentment that can produce results like the 4-0 that ended Celtic’s world record 69 domestic games unbeaten.  This is a proper team, better than most in the Premiership and more than capable of winning on Sunday.  If we are one inch less prepared than them, we will lose.

Before the Lille and Kilmarnock wins I saw a shroud of defeat ahead at Hampden.  We may have turned it around just in time, but for now, the stomach remains knotted.

I actually feel sorry for the new guys who have come to a massive club and have had zero experience of what that’s actually like, apart from playing in a big empty stadium

In fairness, I took the statement from Celtic FC as referring to the ‘backing of Neil Lennon’ with £35M plus.

I have always been fascinated by the Hearts history, the WW1 rivalry with Celtic, their east coast establishment protestant unionism and comparative wealth of their supporter base.

Further the stories of the 2 Barney Battles, the father who lost his life in 1905 before his son was born, and 40,000 lined the east end to pay their respects on route to dalbeth.

The excellent Ian McCallum books tell those stories, I dip into the books often, and have read them in different ways, in sequence, start to finish, or by subject …….. the football seasons, glasgow irish, irish politics, the war. Stunning pieces of work and i cant recommend enough.

    https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/the-celtic-glasgow-irish-the-great-war/

    So up to date

I went to see the Hearts new stand construction a few times, not inside, just in passing, to my slightly trained eye, it was always behind schedule, had some challenges, would always go over budget, but hey benefactors and hearts foundation would pump funds in.

At one point I thought the budgie must be a good thing for them, and might be refreshing to have a smart honest business operator in charge of a club.

However watching the “This is our Story” documentary, on the business side I found their structures all a bit unstructured and wooly. They did however have all the same challenges as any services industry, you cant call it entertainment anymore , they want custoers of the event or the merchandise or the meals pr patronige or stones with names on, they do seem to have many big spending finance types from the embra in crowd. By the way i thought their office design, layout, and furniture was cheap as chips and shambolic. Cost cutting obviously.

As an aside, Levein really did come across as a shallow non strategic thinker, and conversely his coaching team really do have modern approaches.

As an aside aside is “this is our story ” not a proclaimers song or line ?

If we are one inch less prepared than them , it will be down to the management team . So yes , going on this season’s performances I will be nervous until I see how we line up and approach this match.

  16. I was at the infamous match at Tynecastle where Neil got attacked. The atmosphere was poisonous right from the start with Jim Jeffries having roused them out all through the previous week blaming Neil Lennon in particular. There were more Red hand flags than at Ibrox.

Celtic were largely unaware but it didn’t take long for the Celtic support to pick up the extra Hostility. Bring them Home, Boys of the Old Brigade, Come out ye Black &Tans, Sean South and a few others. The whole stand were on their feet the whole game.

Really it is no surprise what happened with Neil being assaulted and the aftermath with the Edinburgh Jury.

I contend that they even hate us more than they hate the Hibs.

I would be happy to rub their noses in it

  18. Hearts’ Resentment v Celtic’s Peerless Scottish Cup Tradition.

I spoke to The Budge after we secured League Invincibility on May 21st, 2017. She was leaving Celtic Park rather hurriedly and I was en route to the Kerrydale Suite from the North Curve as is my want on the last home game of a season. I asked her if she enjoyed witnessing history and, to be fair, she congratulated me/us. Nursing her wrath, no doubt.

Levein is still smarting all the way from 1986. He was part and possibly the catalyst of a major bottle crash. Interestingly Woods/Campbell stressed Hearts’ fragility throughout the years (although they made very light work of us in the 1956 Final and are normally merciless with Hibs). Levein epitomises the population of Scotland in general. He is bored with Celtic’s success. With the exception of Hibs’ fans we are on our own this Sunday. They are desperate for us to fail – more of them and more than normal. They wish us dethroned – permanently.

For me the Raith Rovers defeat was the very worst day (I’ve been watching Celtic since 1967 – glory hunter !). I have various reasons for this and one of the main ones is the fact that they were in a lower division. We are being told, to scare us, that Hearts are not REALLY a lower league team – they very are but could be capable of doing a Raith on us particularly if it goes to penalties. I’m never confident with shoot-outs, the underdogs always seem to have even less to lose (having generally given a good account of themselves to reach penalties) and therefore less pressure.

All of which can be blown away with a sparkling Celtic performance putting the game to bed early doors. We haven’t really seen that this season and it would be strange for it to happen against a well-motivated (resentment-driven) team on a heavy pitch protected from the unique inspiration of the Celtic support. Oddly enough that inspiration will be missed particularly should we fall behind in the match.

    Just my early thoughts.

Lenny is an old Skool Manager. IMHO he has been hamstrung. Not having Anyone he Trusts in the dugout. wrong just so wrong. Smacks of Control.

  20. Yeah Big Bhoy they certainly do, (Hearts FC) hate us more than they hate Hibs.

I remember a few Seasons ago, we where playing them in a Cup Semi @ Hampden.

The seat I was in the North Stand, was near the split between us & them.

There was a minute silence for the late Pope John Paul, which that mob where

disrespectful during the silence, & also shouting sectarian abuse @ us.

Anyway, we won that particular day, & they where sent home, having to eat

humble pie, & with their tails between their legs.

We most certainly do not want it to go to penalties, WG.

Their keeper is way better than any of hours (admittedly, not seen enough of Hazard to judge) and has a point to prove. I’ll be really surprised if he doesn’t have an excellent game.

  22. Petec, yeah NFL is a old school type Manager, however he knows how to handle the ‘Under Pressure’

I thought about him but all that came to mind was him throwing the ball in his own net under pressure from The Bhoys.

Seriously you have a point. I’m not sure he ever cared for us. I do think he cares for them.

Said match, will not go to penalties, & their keeper was snatched up from us, due to PL being a

silly pennies/£’s pinching numpty, by offering CG, a 10K reduction in his wage packet, which came

back to slap PL in the coupon, yeah what a fiasco Peter, Footy nowadays is a business, not a penny/£’s

pinching exercise, hopefully a lesson has been learned, with this fiasco.

  25. THE BLOGGER FORMERLY KNOWN AS GM

Don’t forget that Craig Gordon, for all his good shot stopping qualities, has a very poor record of saving penalties. Someone on this site previously compared his record with McGegor’s, and the latter’s was far superior. I don’t know Hazard’s record, but I feel sure he will do at least as well as Gordon, in the event it goes to penalties. But let’s hope we win it in 90 minutes and avoid such a lottery!😊

  26. Gordon has history of dropping the ball over the line for a celtic winner, who knows he might be conflicted again, and make his own history

  27. WG- a bit harsh on Craig Gordon IMO,a top player for us,he done a lot of unseen work for the Foundation, and Mary’s Meals,I’m sure he will get a great ovation at CP,next time he’s there………oh and when the fans are back…..HH
