Historic Vatican visit represents us all

I like David Turnbull, when given a chance, he does a job for Celtic and he has a role to play in this season’s title race.  But talk about AC Milan being interested in him is surely fanciful.  Scots have done well in Italy recently, David could thrive there, but the demands at Milan would not make that city an easy place to prosper.

The Vatican is the most inspiring place I have ever visited.  The scale and intricacy of its buildings and statues are unlike anywhere else in the world.  My ‘audience’ with Pope Francis was with several thousand others and from a distance of around 100m.  Still, it was a ‘thing’.

It was an historic occasion when the Celtic party who met the Pope in person yesterday morning.  The doors to the Vatican opened to them because they represent you and me and our club.  He spoke of our founding goal, to “alleviate poverty in the city of Glasgow”.  A timely reminder of the work the Foundation will carry out this winter.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Shane McGowan.  His cover of the Celtic Song was an instant classic.  It’s impossible not to smile when thinking about Shane.

  1. Leave Yang and Holm alone ,they will come good ,same as Iwata I see a good midfield player there in same as Bernardo ,in fact I would play the 2 of them against St Johnstone on Sunday.

I’m sorry, without wanting to be rude, that’s absolutely crazy. It’s pure fantasy

  3. CELTIC40ME @ 5:16 PM,

No worries about being rude, in fact the vast majority of the population in these Isles are rude to my sensitive disposition.

No, what you should apologise for is calling someone’s discussion point “crazy” without actually putting a coherent argument together.

    Hail Hail

  4. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    CELTIC4ME, 18 Yard Man – cheers both.

    CELTIC40ME @ 3:51 PM …..

I think you are right but I couldn’t get a handle on future qualification paths so assumed it is pretty much unchanged

Bert Kassies has a wonderful schematic showing the 3 competitions in 24/25

I found it but then lost it 🤦🤦

    Couple of possible comforts.

5 Champions qualify instead of 4.

Non-Champion qualification route still only offers 2 places but one of the current non champion candidates (3rd team in 5th league) won’t be among those scrapping for a place

I’m not saying you are crazy, I think your plan is which I don’t think warrants an apology. But if I’ve offended you then I’m sorry.

However in the real world, and not in the fantasy world we inhabit online one team for Scotland and one for Europe has so much wrong with it that I think “crazy” fits.

  6. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Loaves from breadcrumbs stuff admittedly but I think the Celtic board’s three-year strategy is becoming clearer.

Lock down the core of our squad on 4 year contracts or contract extensions.

New academy and training centre affordable.

    Build it now.

Have it up and running in 18 months

    Tangible improvements in 3 years

    After brilliant financials last year

Worst case scenario : No CL next year? Impact can be managed financially

Medium case : If we can win the league this season and earn significant CL revenue next season we are financially stable at our current base for several years.

Better case : Expanded CL revenue 2 of next 3 years can see us trade up a level

Absolute best case : Expanded CL revenue three successive years. Credible planning for hotel, museum and stadium refurbishment and possible expansion can begin.

  7. The Green Brigade DO NOT, NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL sing ‘Roamin in the Gloamin’.

People need to know the differences between the two fan groups amongst the support before commenting imo.

I strongly agree. Far too many form their viewpoints of the Green brigade based on the hardly impartial `articles` in the MSSM.

  9. CELTIC40ME @ 2023 5:33 PM,

Again, no need to apologise, far from offended.

Just wish to know what you mean.

It could be your ideas not mine which are based on fantasy and crazy you know:)

    So, help me out here…

An exercise to look at our current squad and half it, would not be difficult.

Is that a fantasy, crazy or both?

Once you’ve done that, you look at the development players and players that didn’t cut it in the UCL this season.

Is that a fantasy, crazy or both?

Not necessarily players that don’t have a current or future role, examples…

    Ralston, Taylor, good squad players

Holm, Yang, not good enough at the moment but hopefully have a good future at Celtic

Is that a fantasy, crazy or both?

We could have an eleven of very competent players that are outside our first eleven.

Is that a fantasy, crazy or both?

Give you the bad grammar, but that’s a goven;)

We would be happy for them to compete in early Cup ties or on a “wet n windy Wednesday night in Dingwall”.

Yet only getting a Glasgow Derby, Cup final game or UCL start if injuries dictated it.

Is that a fantasy, crazy or both?

Now, several managers have wished to try to rest players, rota players, with various levels of success, so clarification would be great.

    Hail Hail

  10. Laxalt,

We’re the Bhoys ( SMV ) not originally part of the GB before they broke away ?

If so, I would imagine that they have not dramatically changed their song sheet.

I always thought with the noises Brendan made when he came that everyone at the club saw it as a 3 year project.

We’ll find out soon enough I guess

“Just wish to know what you mean”

I mean I think your plan is crazy.

  13. CELTIC40ME @ 5:55 PM,

So just intimating that I’m a crazy fantasist without any cause.

You used to be better than that.

    Hail Hail

How much money is there in Finnish football?

Aberdeen making their opponents look like Real Madrid.

  15. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Doesn’t look good for Aberdeen. Could be on the wrong end of a hiding if they don’t up it.

Barry Robson another manager the team has thrown under a bus.

  16. Celtic will never become a force in Europe again unless they wear their first team strip at every opportunity. Black is not the change colour either, it’s white, as against St Etienne in Glasgow in 1968….4-0

  17. bournesouprecipe on

Wonder if SMSM are chasing up Lazio’s racism displays with UEFA or are they content that they’ve repeated all the banners ?

  18. lets all do the huddle on

Saw the Popes at Johnnie Foxs – the pogues without S McG ?

are you sure thats right way round? were they not shane(and others) without the rest of the pogues?

  19. When i saw the item on CQN about Celtic’s audience with the PopeI thought it was a sendup or fake news, but glad to hear it actually happened. Celtic with it’s religious background and known for the great charity work since the club’s inception, it was obvious that this meeting was always likely to happen.

The Pope I believe hails from the football mad country of Argentina and no doubt a football man. He is old enough to remember the infamous Celtic v Racing Club world club final. I wonder what’s his team, maybe Boca Junior.

  20. The article leads with: “I like David Turnbull, when given a chance, he does a job for Celtic and he has a role to play in this season’s title race.”

Given that due to January’s Asian Cup we’ll likely be without Kyogo, Maeda, Hatate, Oh, and possibly also Yang & Tilio for anything up to 4 weeks, Turnbull might find himself playing as our lone striker! And if Abada is unable to bring himself to play in front of a crowd waving Palestinian flags, we could be without as many as 5 or 6 key first-teamers in late January!

With only two recognised strikers, both of whom are likely to be at the Asian Cup, who do we actually have to fill in? And how did we get into this predicament in the first place?!
