Historic Vatican visit represents us all

I like David Turnbull, when given a chance, he does a job for Celtic and he has a role to play in this season’s title race.  But talk about AC Milan being interested in him is surely fanciful.  Scots have done well in Italy recently, David could thrive there, but the demands at Milan would not make that city an easy place to prosper.

The Vatican is the most inspiring place I have ever visited.  The scale and intricacy of its buildings and statues are unlike anywhere else in the world.  My ‘audience’ with Pope Francis was with several thousand others and from a distance of around 100m.  Still, it was a ‘thing’.

It was an historic occasion when the Celtic party who met the Pope in person yesterday morning.  The doors to the Vatican opened to them because they represent you and me and our club.  He spoke of our founding goal, to “alleviate poverty in the city of Glasgow”.  A timely reminder of the work the Foundation will carry out this winter.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Shane McGowan.  His cover of the Celtic Song was an instant classic.  It’s impossible not to smile when thinking about Shane.

    Not only St Andrews Day, today is also the Centenary of the death of Scotland’s own revolutionary Socialist, Teacher and Celtic Communist, John MacLean, who died aged only 44. A special event, one of many, will be held tonight in Pollockshaws, a song contest, and on January 19 next year, The MacLean Centenary Concert, as part of Celtic Connections at the royal Concer Hall, including such as Eddi Reader and Billy Bragg, and many in between. Not to mention a new collection of poems; ‘Now’s the Day, Now’s the Hour’ Poems for John MacLean.

     

     

    Doubt you’ll see a statue of John MacLean in George Square…..

    Dare I suggest that SEVCO ‘s apparent lacklustre performance tonight might be down to a deliberate ploy to drop to the conference as they probably believe they have a better chance of success in that tournament …quality of opposition etc ..,and no Liverpool ? 🤔

    Why does that not surprise me big fellah? One hundred years ago today. Great photograph!

     

    His parents were both Gaelic speakers too, Scots Gaelic I think given his Calvinistic family background, Free Church I think. Glasgow full of statues and streets named after Aristocrats, and tobacco barons et al, but John MacLean lives on one hundred years. Bona fide hero to the working classes of his time. And still.

    You have to wonder how Cifuentes and Lammers get in a starting eleven?

     

     

    Danilo is not really any better than Dessers.

     

     

    Sima had a purple patch but is no better than Matondo who is not great.

     

     

    We weren’t great last season but we have lost Morelos, Kent, Arfield, Colak, Sakala and Hagi and replaced them all with inferior players.

    This season will yield nothing good.

     

     

    We can see now it was just a “new manager bounce” – nothing more.

     

     

    There’s not a hope in hell we’re only 5 points behind on the 30th of December – and I wouldn’t bank on having a cup in the bag either

     

    And I don’t see anything else but being here again in a year.

     

     

    I think we need to punt about half the squad and start again. That team are nothing and after they beat us and seeing a win puts us through and likely as group winners we had no excuse to come out and play like we were frightened. We’re so slow and lack any proper fight or desire. So many players go hiding. Really no one id be sad to see go and I do mean any of them. Hard to see how we turn it around after the last two games when we won’t have that much money to spend and it’ll be difficult to shift most of those we need to.

    Why did anyone think we were going to blow this mob away tonight? We have the same players as the first time we played them. If I never see Cifuentes Lammers and Sima again I’ll be happy. Very poor team devoid of quality and ideas.

     

     

    I’m going for a hip replacement next month and I think I could give Cifuentes a yard of a start.

    I genuinely wouldn’t be bothered if any of this squad other than the keeper never played for us again.

     

     

    They are a bunch of weak minded, bang average footballers who will get ever manager they play under sacked and will continue to let the club down time and time again.

     

     

    The ‘old guard’ are losers. The new signings are losers.

     

     

    Could smell that result coming from the very start of the game.

    I think it was great that the club’s ethos and history was acknowledged in our Papal audience.

     

    I was a bit puzzled on the relatively low numbers of players attending (as far as I could see from pics)

     

    No Joe, Matty O or Kyogo puzzled me for a few secs.

     

    Would more have attended if it was the Dalai Lama ?

     

    Anyways, just mental musings.

     

     

    KINGLUBO mentioned all the wars caused by religion; surely just as many caused by ego tantrums, power grabs plus oil and resources spats. Not to mention pissing contests such as Las Malvinas.

     

     

     

    I caught their 2nd half; of two average teams (Aris were blowing thru their Aris’s by the end) I thought the buns looked stronger but still toothless.
