How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  1. Anyone got any decent recomendations for things to see & do in Barcelona and also good eateries?

Me and Mrs LB going the first week in May for her 40th. Would like a nice restaurant for her birthday.

Trying to look organised and also in the know!

  2. Players, managers, zombies and msm criticising advert on sunday.

Still waiting on any of them to point out any inaccuracies.

If your the same club, pay yer debts ya scum ye!.

    :-( horrorshow.

looks like individually changing the each of the lines/polylines to match what standards you want to apply would be only way to get it 100% correct.

    time consuming for sure.

only other way, may be to change linetypes in their layer in each individual dwg/xref to your spec then port it in.

  4. All the conditions are reversed upon repayment of the loan, but what chance have sevco to repay? Ashley has successfully snaffled all the profit making aspects of the business, right down to the shirt sponsorship which comes into his hands from season 17/18. This is significant in that if they fail to be promoted this year it would be the start of just their second year in the SPFL, with much of the revenue available in the first year spent on squad building. Therefore as soon as they get in a position to reap the rewards of a shirt deal, it all goes to Ashley. With Ashley controlling the board I expect a strategy to keep them in the championship this year, as if they need one.

Dave King’s strategy all along was to use his fan influence to starve the club of funds and diminish the value of the shares to the “optimum” point where shares are lowest and proximity to the SPL is highest, and then buy the club on the cheap. He’s been outmanouvred by Ashley, such are the game’s these people play.

The terms of the loan include 2 board members, again King may try to remove these via an EGM but the condition remains until the loan is repaid, therefore Ashley can just cycle through his preferred men to maintain control.

  5. For some reason a Hun has been wandering the corridors of Glasgow Caledonian University and has come across an FFin’ poster sized copy of the Herald front page from 2012 with the headline “RFC Born 1872, Died 2012”:

“I don’t know how long this has been up for but it is the largest thing on the wall (it’s been blown up to take up almost of the full height of the wall) just outside a Clyde 2 office in one of the buildings at Glasgow Caledonian today… it is just another bit of evidence into the vast influence Tarriers have in this city.”

    ——

“Set it on fire you have every right”

    ——

“Under what pretence is this up on the wall?”

    ——

“we are just going through a TEMPORARY blip in a truly magnificent and glorious history.”

    ——

“welcome to the rhepublic of scotland, were the minority rule”

    ——

“had a few mates at Cali and always found there to be a high proportion of taigs there”

    ——

“And these are people who go to university what a waste of tax payers money, this is why this country is down the tubes.”

    ——

“The problem our support has is that after decades of being labelled as some sort of violent hooligans, we sit back and accept all manner of sh*te thrown at us without question or opposition. People talk about Rangers being done up like a kipper since 2012 – it’s been going on for a ******* lot longer than that.”

    ——

    “Complain to the Principal!

All alumni email the uni court to say you are no longer donating to the university!”

    ——

“Two years that’s been up? FFS what is going on in that city? I cannot believe it has not been at least vandalised… never mind ripped straight off the wall by any means possible. Is it only tarriers that go to uni now?”

    ——

“This seems to be creeping through every facet of society nowadays. We do need to find a way to stop it thats for sure!”

    Cue Colonel Kurtz:

    “To whomever it may concern,

I, having attended Edinburgh University in the 1990’s, have always looked upon the Glasgow Caledonian University as a great University.

However it has come to my attention that you have installed an unremovable article on your notice board that may, and most likely has, caused some offence to a great deal of your students. I understand that this article, by the Herald, has been present for some time on your University’s notice board.

I would like to advise you to remove this in light of the upcoming game between the two biggest football clubs in your city. This type of nonsense only causes further friction in a time where we, as a city , need to try and extinguish any possible upheaval that may occur in this up coming game.

The press in Scotland are doing their damn hardest, it would seem, for imminent trouble to break out this weekend; probably in the purpose to sell more of their gutter rags. I would hope a University of your standing would not contribute to this by blatantly trying to stir up your very own students.”

  6. Where is the sense in posting a statement when…DD said that – “The sooner Rangers FC are back in the same League as Celtic, the better the game will be. Rangers FC are a wonderful club with a,fabulous history and a magnificent supporter base.”

    Who’s the mugs?

  7. Ashley may offer a seat on the board to any of the three bears or King’s appointee, for favoursat a future date por cierto

  8. In effect they are taking out a loan on more onerous conditions to pay off a previous loan on worse conditions.

It’s the corporate equivalent of using your credit card to make payments on the loan you took out to pay off your debts.

But IMO shareholders would have to consider the value of assets achievable before and after a share issue.

Having said that, the institutional investors are probably already considering a write-down and tax loss.

Re SMSM reaction to the ad, I posted this on Sunday night and think it’s still relevant 36 hours later

Don’t expect the semblance of a reaction about the Ad content from the SMSM. They are stuck between a rock and a rather hard place – and they don’t like it..

They see them selves as the professional regurgitaters of ‘the truth’, informing hoi polloi on a daily basis what passes for today’s ‘hot off the press’ scoop. They regard the ‘blogeratti’ as mere amateurs, but unfortunately for them we are better in their supposed function than they are. While we become more and more fearless and influential, they become ever more marginalised – and they don’t like it..

As our Phil states, they are merely ‘on-message’ stenographers printing (after suitable cut-and-paste activity on occasion) what their ‘masters’ and their ‘network’ want the unquestioning paying customer to believe. We don’t, as they don’t control us – and they don’t like it.

With plummeting circulations and concomitant reducing job security, they see the gravy train leaving the station and heading for a wreck down the track – and they don’t like it..

As for our Ad – it tells the truth – and they don’t like it.

I saved this a few years ago ( as you can see from the dates ) from , I think , Barcabhoy who was responding to a simikiar request from another poster.

I haven’t been yet so cant personally recommend. Hope it’s of some use.

Ref your request for Hotels in Barcelona.

On the Ramblas I can recommend the Montecarlo 124 La Rambla which is 3/4 star with roof terrace, and across the street the Hotel 1898 109 La Rambla which is probably 5 star with a roof pool and pool and fitness centre in the basement, top class.

Stick to the top end of the Ramblas as although there are Hotels such as the Orient or Oriental, and Hotel Gaudi further down, they are a bit close to the red light district.

Stay near the top of Ramblas or Passage de Gracia.

    Good luck.

PS Games can be viewed in numerous Irish bars near the KFC on the left on the way down the Ramblas round the corner from Placa Reial ( Kings Square ) this also is the location for Les Quinzes Nits (The fifteenth night )a famous inexpensive restaurant which as a feature has a queue outside each night awaiting entry

i would stay in the eixample district..its very central and handy for everything…there are literally dozens of decent hotels in the area, i cant recommend one in particular as i dont use hotels here …however Celtic stayed in Casa Fuster a couple of years ago and although its very upmarket you can sometimes get very good deals directly from their web site

  20. If King and his 3 bears didn’t know they were in a fight with a heavyweight they do now.

What Ashley has done is upped the ante for the EGM. He knew the 3 bears had £5m there available as a loan facility so what he has done has meant they will now need to double their investment should they win the EGM just to get the honour of controlling a vastly loss making, broken business.

Don’t be surprised if Ashley releases the 2nd tranche of £5m quickly to make it even less palatable.

So they “win” at the EGM and they have 2 choices. Run the loss making business with the Ashley facility in place. Which further deteriorates the income streams by removing the vast majority of retail and shirt sponsorship. Or pony up the £10m to remove Ashley’s influence which still leaves you with the loss making business and a rather large hole in your pocket.

Expect King and Co to slink off without an EGM. As you can bet your bottom dollar Ashley is currently making sure he doesn’t lose at the EGM on votes.

He is ragdolling them, almost like he has taken it personally………

  21. Gordon_J – The second worst negotiating scenario is the one where you’re desperate, the worst is where you’re desperate and the other party knows it.

In a club where Ashley has placed two of his own men on the board, how much of the financial detail wouldn’t be known to him, and whose interests are those two guys representing when they negotiate a loan with Ashley?

  22. And is The Rangers FC Limited the same entity as The Rangers Football Club Limited? Ah hae ma doots.

Had an interesting “conversation” on Twitter the past hour.

I had Tweeted a link to Barcabhoy ‘ s well balanced post in TSFM about who the victims were of SDM’S chicanery. It was an attempt to raise the level of debate and go beyond the ad into what drove it’s need.

Speirs responded but did not want to delve deeper into underlying reasons for the state of affairs staying at the OC/NC level. English wanted out altogether and Jackson said nothing.

These three all have the hard evidence of Rangers lieing to HMRC in 2005 and keeping same info from Harper MacLeod in 2012. We also have circumstantial evidence they lied to get a UEFA licence.

These three have evidence of the first two (as do many journos) and say nothing.

We as a society are ill served by such men.
