Howe and premature news

265

I read a lot of confidence that the appointment of Eddie Howe is a done deal, all a matter of getting Bournemouth’s play-off games out of the way to allow the appointment of his backroom staff.  If only the world worked this way.

Managerial appointments have commercial consequences.  If Celtic had a manager contracted, the stock market would be informed at an early opportunity.  Negotiations are no one else’s business but it is inappropriate to keep commercially sensitive information like this from the market.

Eddie may have shaken hands, spent an hour with the media team for a planned reveal, but a contract?  Sorry.  You will know very soon after that is signed.  Until then, it is a draft document.

It also makes no sense waiting on the availability of backroom staff before announcing the manager, who could easily tell the media, “I’m working on the backroom team and will let you know when there is news.”

His former Bournemouth assistants will either join him in his next job, stay where they are, or go elsewhere.  Eddie will take another job, with or without them.  This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.

There is also the dirty little subject.  Imagine for a moment the pressure inside every business unit at Celtic Park.  The finance team will have nervous twitches looking at statements and forecasts.  Those in the retail department will be battering their F5 keys and calling everyone in the business hoping for information.  Ticketing have their busiest two month’s work to cram into an ever-decreasing window.  The Foundation and the many who depend on it for support and assistance – jeez – they need our help more than anyone.  “Just.  Do.  It.” will be the message from every department head.

An entire enterprise is waiting on one statement to allow it to trade normally.  Do you really think Celtic are so chilled about money would sit on news that forgoes this cash?  Really?

You and I have seen a lot of the football business.  We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment.  This scenario, I buy.  Anyway, have a nice Thursday!

Spurs were in the jobby cup final this year and the champions league final 2 years ago

Success is relative. Howe was without doubt a success at Bournemouth without ever getting near winning anything, like league titles aside

Rodgers might win the fa cup this season but already his achievements at Leicester have enhanced his reputation more than what he achieved at Celtic

  3. ONENIGHTINLISBON on 13TH MAY 2021 3:23 PM

Spurs got to a league cup final this season and a Champions League final a couple of years ago. A decent manager coming in and winning a trophy with them isn’t too unrealistic – Leicester are one game away from winning a trophy.

I think we’d need to see a tangible improvement. Considering the rebuild required, if we ran Sevco close, beat them in a couple of head-to-heads and maybe the occasional encouraging performance in Europe, I’d accept that as a decent start and realise that not winning the league next season wasn’t entirely the new manager’s fault.

Another season like this one though would definitely count as a failure.

Leicester paid a record British fee for a manager in obtaining BR’s services. I’d bet Gerrard could get a Premier league gig just now.

If you do well up here there are opportunities in England. Maybe not for top 6 immediately but they are aiming for the elite of the elite, so there is no shame in that.

  5. ROLLING_STONE on 13TH MAY 2021 3:37 PM

True but Rodgers had already made his name in England and was a Gerrard slip away from winning the EPL. Gerrard already had a “reputation” before he’d won anything with English-based pundits swooning over their “improvement” under him even before this season.

The best Neil Lennon could get was Bolton and I don’t think Ronny’s agent was being overwhelmed by calls from England.

If Howe does well with us, he’d be enhancing a reputation he’s already built with Bournemouth. Celtic alone wouldn’t be enough to get an EPL job, in my opinion.

Hi pal. Yup – he’s just finished his first year at Strathclyde – all classes and studying done online. I’ve been really impressed to be honest – he’s attacked it as a 9-5 job every day without fail. Passed everything so far (final two results still to come in). Looking forward to first legal (not actual) pub visit this weekend since he turned 18 last November.

The little I’ve heard from McKay (all about rugby) has been fine – looks to expand commercial opportunities / broaden fan base / etc. Crucially, unlike the Great Pedro, has no history I can see of interfering with the player side of things. I could be wrong.

Interested why you are so set against – is it lack of football experience, or something else? I’m open to be convinced :-))

  7. Someone mentioned Pantomime, that’s it, exactly.

Why on earth can’t the club give a statement saying something along these lines.

We are currently searching for a new Manager. We have 6 managers on our short leit and are processing these now. We hope for all our sakes we can make an announcement quickly.

That would just about satisfy me.

I don’t think Gerrard is the best example – his pedigree as a player meant that he was always potentially earmarked for a top job. The Hun job wasn’t a move up down or sideways, it was his first job. He’s proved himself to be capable and in terms of his development as a manager it’s probably been as, or more successful than Rodgers at a similar stage

  9. onenightinlisbon on

I agree that the Spurs job “may” offer a pathway to success but look at the last guy….

Obviously have to accept that BR had a reputation in England based on his past performances as a manager there. SG had a reputation due to his quality as a footballer (even before his quality as a manager was known).

However, think you are comparing apples and oranges with your comparisons to Neil and Ronny.

Neil and Ronny didn’t get calls from England because neither were very good. I feel sorry for Ronny as he wasn’t backed while he was at the club and he had to deal with the disrespect of the players. However, we were still thumped 6-1 by Legia.

In Neil’s case, many remember the Barca game and getting to the last 16, but forget his first 2 seasons where he failed to qualify for Europe (admittedly saved when sion fielded an ineligible player(s)). They forget the various cup defeats or that, but for that 45 mins against Kilmarnock, he may have been fired. In his last season AC Milan best us 5-0 on aggregate – they finished 8th in Serie A that season and haven’t been seen in CL since.

Both were poor managers and their subsequent careers have corroborated as much. That’s why there were no calls from England.

It has to be noted as well that the club showed very little ambition during the years between Oldco dying and Sevco appearing.

  11. The evidence suggests that if you do well here you get a championship job, if you do exceptionally, record-breakingly well you get a mid table premiership job

I think a manager of Howe’s calibre would improve us in every department but as I stated, the rebuild this season is so big he needs to be cut a good deal of slack.

  13. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Hmmmm……I suppose there’s a fine line between cutting off your nose to spite your face and telling Eddie ‘thanks for the offer, I’ll get back to you at some point’ Howe where to go.

This guy had better walk on water. Eventually accepting the Celtic manager’s job because nothing better came up doesn’t really endear him to me.

    Is that’s what’s happening?

  17. As I posted on a previous lead article, we must consider 3 things when recruiting

Quality – what have you done etc?

Cost – sign on, wages and clauses

Time – when are you available and contract duration

Considering only 2 of these isn’t sufficient. Have we got a candidate who ticks the first 2 boxes but not the third?

I have no idea and would be speculating wildly to suggest we do.

  18. Guys,

    Great conversation.

Celtic can massively build reputations. I think the media really built up BR after we matched the best England could offer.

The praise Celtic got for drawing twice with the then invincible Man City team cemented BR’s status ( Yes I know, pity about some other Euro results )

There is one nan responsible for all this and we know who he is.

  21. SFTB – Danny Milosevic!

Footballers are immature and over-indulged manchilds, manchildren, mankid…..you know what I mean. They can hardly manage their own insecurities and egos, never mind accept their career decisions and work with them.

A 43 year old manager you’d expect would have a more mature approach. If he’s shown any hesitation to sign for whatever reason, but signs eventually; I would then fully expect a mature, considered and reasoned manager to put their concerns behind them and simply get on with the job in the interest of succeeding for the benefit of both the club and their own career.

I wouldn’t expect them to pout and put in half a shift ‘cos it’s all someone else’s fault, they never wanted to be there anyway, and life’s so unfair. Mind you, Mourinho might.

  22. onenightinlisbon on

If we are actually allowing Howe to sit and wait for a better offer then we should tell him where to go.

I would imagine we have put all of the eggs in one basket and no plan B exists should he turn us down.

I fully agree regarding your comments on Lennon which is why he shouldn’t have been given the job the second time around.

However, despite winning the SPFL and getting us to the group stages of the CL (and Barcelona as you mentioned), you’d have thought that would be good enough to get a lower-end EPL or top-end Championship job. But Bolton was pretty much as low as it can get in the Championship with severe financial difficulties. I must admit it surprised me at the time as I thought he might have earned himself a job at say, Nottingham Forest or something.

I think the point is, if you come here with a decent reputation already you can enhance it. I’m not convinced if Kennedy stayed on and won the league next season (I know, I know….) it would’ve been enough to tempt EPL owners.

It is the additional criteria which worries me. The EPL will be able to target the top quality players who fit the requirements due to their TV income. Not sure this will apply to Scotland.
