Improving performance. Lessons from US sport

921

Following on from our discussion yesterday about adopting one or two of the techniques the enormously successful GB Olympic cycling team there are other areas where a technical advantage can be sought.

Football is awash with metrics these days.  Clubs know things about their players they never even wondered about 10 years ago, leading to more informed decisions.  It is probably no exaggeration to suggest that a club like Celtic will have some information on thousands of players.  At the top level, much of this information will be fresh in the minds of coaches and scouts, and will easily be recorded on a database, but scouting permeates through youth football.  Acquiring and assimilating information on the many hundreds of players on view each month is an information challenge.

The US sports were early to get on top of this problem.  SportsBoard is a iPad-based data capture and management app which enables coaches and scouts to record information on players (their own players and others) as they watch the game.  Data is uploaded from the iPad to a cloud-based database.  Information and comment on each player or opposing team can then easily be analysed.

The alternative would be to scour through unstructured notes without any way of controlling the up-flow of information.

The app has also been used to provide instant metrics to first team squads.  Players can get home from training, login and see how their performance was rated that day, allowing them to adjust their own target for the next session.  I spoke to the designer, Gregg Jacobs, who has received a ton of media coverage in the US over the last two years.  He told me this was about providing “more meaningful feedback”.   Take a look at the Assessment and Contact Management features, which has screenshots of the ‘soccer’ app.

So this week we’ve covered orthopaedic pillows on tour and leg heaters from the GB cycling team, as well as a scouting management and instant metrics system from US sports, all low-cost and designed to reduce risk and improve performance.

Should we do it?

  1. Completed the survey there and suggested that rather than me putting money into local hostelries prior to a game they should provide along with the museum and superstore a decent licensed facility on site. Also stated that current catering and toilet facilities were embarrassing!

  2. We’ll keep Hooper this window, he’ll change agent then sign a new contract towards the end of the season.

Hooper is a good striker who is getting better, but I would tend to agree with you and given my 40+ year as a Celtic supporter I could easily think of around 20 strikes who IMO were better. Just shows how spoiled we’ve been over the years.

  4. He irks, dead easy to complete online. There is a link earlier or you can go direct to the Celtic website. HH

Thanks mate. I tried to look at it like any issue at work to be honest. There is usually a logical solution to anything and the rumours are the agents doing in my opinion.

The demand for a top striker in England at the better clubs doesn’t appear to be there for me.

Everton buy low and sell high. Spurs are the only side I can see paying the cash that we would want and would appeal to Hooper as he appears to come from a Spurs stronghold. I still don’t see anyone dealing now unless they have a striker crisis.

I see Hoops in the Hoops until at least the summer. neil Lennon may have a few more headaches then with a few of our stars going to clubs down south. It means he is doing his job well. Throughout our history we have been plundered by English clubs but we have usually replaced them with similar players and got success. June is the time to be concerned when possibly 4 or 5 will be linked with a move elsewhere.

In terms of improving our own squad I would buy Jonny Russell now. We could do with another winger/striker for the remainder of this season. You improve the squad when you are strong. The boy is a good player and is I believe a Hoops fan. No brainer for me. United need the cash!

enjoyed your critique of the George @Square statues. A right bagatelle. A friend of mine who is a Glasgow buff used to always include these statues in his quizzes and also where they were situated on the square. Tough quiz. I always got Vicky and Rabbie correct the others not so much. The inclusion of Scott suggests the city rivalry is a more recent phenomenon.

I think Celtic hold all the cards in this situation and the club has to do what is best for us – which is holding all of our top players until the summer at the very least.

We have no less than a 50% chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League – and we could wait another five or six years for that opportunity to come around again. We will have a much better chance of beating Juventus with Gary Hooper in the team.

He has previously said he was keen to stay at Celtic – around this time last year. But more importantly, he has never said he wants to leave – as you pointed out.

  8. Quick post, in a meeting and now have loads of texts saying Hooper to Spurs, he was at airport this morning?

Having lived in Colchester Essex is more a. West Ham stronghold. Well after Manure that is. Would agree with u though that Spurs make more sense than Norwich.

The lure of London is massive for a lot of players.

I still don’t see Spurs making a bid that would make Celtic deal now.

If Scunthorpe are getting 20% of the transfer fee then by my calculations it would take £10m to buy him now. Not many clubs pay that in January. I think Mjallby mentioning another player (Austin) has rattled a few people. Very unlike Celtic to comment on other players under Neil Lennon.

  12. Snowed in .Snow non-stop for 2 days . No tv signal and now we wait for the electric to go down. Then there will be no central heating and no phone. Got battries for the radio and some logs for the living-room fire ,candles and gas for cooking so we’ll survive.

  13. I’m Neil Lennon (tamrabam)

I agree with most of what you say, and the ever decreasing circle is not all about the supporters financial outlay.

The widely anticipated shrinkage written about by Paul67, TBB, and others as far back as three four seasons ago is due to a myriad of reasons, and the days of 52,000 season ticket holders may be gone, for the time being.

A worldwide membership scheme of paying money directly to Celtic is the way forward and should already be at an advanced stage of thought. Maybe the Celtic survey recognises this? Supporters should join the club by paying a fee monthly dependant on what individuals can afford, and how much they want to contribute.

I disagree strongly on standing areas, too many tragedies, the consequential Taylor report and we await justice for the 96, besides for fundamental architectural reasons alone as pointed out yesterday by TBB, I don’t we’ll see the retrograde steps, of standing areas.

  14. McInally blasts Rangers as Division Three flops

Peterhead boss unimpressed with Glasgow side

PETERHEAD manager Jim McInally today blasted Rangers as flops, despite the Glasgow giants running away with the Third Division title.

The Blue Toon boss was highly unimpressed with how the Gers performed during their 1-0 win at Balmoor.

McInally insisted that Rangers should be doing a lot more against the sides of Scotland’s bottom tier due to the amount of money at their disposal.

He said: “Rangers have been praised for being professional for beating us 1-0, but they should be doing a lot more with their multi-million pound budget.

“They should be wiping the floor with every team in the Third Division.

“A lot of their players are on several thousand pounds a week.

“They certainly didn’t look any fitter than us for a full-time team.

“They shouldn’t be getting any praise – the game really should have been a no-contest.”

Hooper is a decent striker in my opinion no more than that but he is young and can improve. His first touch can be poor at times also for me he doesnt make centre backs work hard enough as his movement could be better. However, any club that buys him know he will score goals and he can improve his game.If I had to bet on it would say he will stay with us until summer unless Celtic recieve an offer for him that is just to good to refuse.H.H.

SSN- Celtic’s Gary Hooper spotted at Cape Canaveral boarding Space Shuttle to sign for Moon FC. The Scottish minnows hope to sign A.L.F. or Metal Mickey on loan as a replacement.

  17. I work with a Burnley supporter, he certainly rates Charlea Austin.

He reckons we would have to pay more to get Austin than we would get for Hooper. This kind of stuff shows you how screwed the game is, he’s possibly correct.

    PS Austin is currently injured.

  18. Possible replacement’s for Hooper Wanyama?

from yesterday’s Under 20’s match report

“Celtic came back into the match just after the half hour mark and a solo run by George was finished by an outstanding strike. He curled the ball into the top corner of the net from 35-yards out, beating the outstretched Stewart, to draw his side level.”

“And to seal the victory, Atajic then struck four minutes from the end, completing a wonderful solo run with a clinical finish.”

    Gary Hooper “We’ll See”

    We’ll See

    Author Unknown

Once upon a time, there was a farmer in the central region of China. He didn’t have a lot of money and, instead of a tractor, he used an old horse to plow his field.

One afternoon, while working in the field, the horse dropped dead. Everyone in the village said, “Oh, what a horrible thing to happen.” The farmer said simply, “We’ll see.” He was so at peace and so calm, that everyone in the village got together and, admiring his attitude, gave him a new horse as a gift.

Everyone’s reaction now was, “What a lucky man.” And the farmer said, “We’ll see.”

A couple days later, the new horse jumped a fence and ran away. Everyone in the village shook their heads and said, “What a poor fellow!”

The farmer smiled and said, “We’ll see.”

Eventually, the horse found his way home, and everyone again said, “What a fortunate man.”

    The farmer said, “We’ll see.”

Later in the year, the farmer’s young boy went out riding on the horse and fell and broke his leg. Everyone in the village said, “What a shame for the poor boy.”

    The farmer said, “We’ll see.”

Two days later, the army came into the village to draft new recruits. When they saw that the farmer’s son had a broken leg, they decided not to recruit him.

Everyone said, “What a fortunate young man.”

The farmer smiled again – and said “We’ll see.”

Moral of the story: There’s no use in overreacting to the events and circumstances of our everyday lives. Many times what looks like a setback, may actually be a gift in disguise. And when our hearts are in the right place, all events and circumstances are gifts that we can learn valuable lessons from.

The problem with George Square, if there is one indeed, is not the square itself but rather some buildings on its periphery.

The tall college building in particular, is a shameful skid mark on an otherwise splendid architectural perimeter.

News emerged yesterday of plans to demolish the station’s hotel (Copthorne?). A great start.

The square is primarily a meeting place and a lunch venue. The council should, therefore, concentrate on delivering a clean and practical space.

Tourists and their cameras are fixed on the surrounding structures, and perhaps even the statues, not the ground.

If they are to remain (boo) I suggest they should be augmented by some new creations to represent modren-day men and women of significance to the city.

As a starter for ten I nominate Mo Bangura, David Leggat and of course Gerry Butler.
