It’s all about Tannadice, your AIM nomad

808

The stage is set. Dundee United, the club who were last to beat Celtic, stand in the way of their treble ambitions, as the clubs meet on three consecutive occasions next month.  The first game, a Scottish Cup quarter final at Tannadice, is the most crucial.

United lost their best two players last week but they remain they will know that beating Celtic at home will make them favourites for the Scottish Cup.  They will be far less confident at the following week’s League Cup final, Dundee United expectations are always low at Hampden, but pressure will be on the club to win their home game.

A note on the suitability or otherwise of a director of a public company.  In the UK, only the courts can ban you from being a company director, HMRC cannot ban you, any more than they can ban you from driving.  In the UK, public companies are held to a higher standard than private companies.  If anyone presents to you claiming, “HMRC have never banned me from driving/being a company director”, you know your being misled.  The same is true for most jurisdictions.

The AIM market requires companies to have nominated adviser (nomad), which carries out regulator duties on behalf of the market, and ultimately shareholders.  The fact that UK, or other, courts have not prohibited you from being a company director implies nothing about your suitability as a director of a public company.  When it comes to the AIM market, this suitability is judged by your effective regulator, your nomad.  A recent history of financial criminal activity, for example, will give your nomad plenty to consider, as would a recent history of being a director in a liquidated public company.  Far more would decline such a candidate than approve.

I wonder if Mhari Clark will be at Firhill tomorrow ? If she is could someone ask her why she hates Celtic & Celtic fans ? Seemingly a Thistle die-hard from that stronghold of Paisley.

Pity she’s the prospective SNP candidate for Paisley South !

  7. Re elp TV monies….

Someone mentioned earlier football in Scotland was not attractive to the world therefore our population percentage or subscription share doesn’t come into it so we couldn’t expect a much better deal than we have now.

    Except…

The deal announced today was for domestic rights only. Following the referendum we’re now well informed that one country of the union constitutes 85% of the population. Clearly the EPL and the E Championship have a numbers appeal well beyond the attraction level of Scottish football.

    But consider…

Scottish population is nearly 5.5m with 800k Scots living in other parts of the UK. So in simple terms Scots or Scots connection represent somewhere between 8.5 & 10% of the population.

There are 42 clubs in the top two English leagues, 12(+3 if you get my drift!) in the SPFL

I understand sky penetration is greater in Scotland than England per head of population.

    £5bn…

Let’s take only the low 8% as population equivalent deal is = £400m

but 42 clubs v 15 clubs so roughly one third, now is = £133m

Sky Scots higher penetration factor?? Say +5% now is = £140m

Sky subs risk factor if Scot footie walks away say +5% now is = £147m

    £147 m…

Over 3 years compared to £80m over 5 in current deal.

£49m per season compared to £16m per season

    Commercial…

No doubt Sky would be able to talk down the lower level commercial and advertisers interest ( of course the useless promotion of the game makes this a self fulfilling prophecy) so allow a 20% grab back = £39.2m per season.

    +150%…

Now no doubt I am commercially inept and negotiations would be much more complex and nuanced than my simplistic ball park imaginings but anything less than double the money (£32m) and its theft.

    Real issue…

Scottish clubs just can’t invisage not having any sky money. Much has improved financially at many of our clubs as they strive to be self financing but its very early in the process of fiscal sanity but we’re getting there.

Funnily enough sky’s parsimony has been helpful in this regard and each year of the 5 year deal which has passed has resulted in marginal less dependency. That clubs as Hearts Aberdeen Dundee Utd and Dundee have sold record or near record ST sales even where prices have increased tell the story of greater worth of supporters direct contributions.

I have sky/bt sports via Virgin XL package but once this seasons gone so will the sports. I watch only a tiny portion of the total output (celtic and occassional epl) £5bn is too obscene for me. That is a JUDGEMENT I can make. What Scotland deserves is purely SUBJECTIVE on my part.

And that’s me not even getting started on the ‘National Broadcaster’.

    Rant over.

    A very interesting post.

I think part of the trouble is that Scottish clubs are completely preoccupied with the idea that by being on Sky/ BT Sport they will get lots of exposure, thereby enabling them to sell more stadium advertising, get more lucrative shirt sponsorship deals etc.

On that basis they sell the TV rights to Sky/ BT at a rate that favours the broadcaster. The clubs are just glad to have a UK-wide platform and the broadcasters know it and can play hardball.

This is why we have idiotic situations where Doncaster pays the broadcasters £800,000 a year to go to the trouble of broadcasting Sevco games from Brechin, Stirling, Montrose etc.

I don`t subscribe to Sky but I am thoroughly sickened with the way in which the EPL is being rammed down our throats. Nowadays people seem to want to talk more about English football than Scottish football. Walkaway Sevcophants account for some of this, but I think there genuinely is now a huge proportion of Scottish people that care more for Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd etc than they do for any Scottish club. And its all Sky`s fault.
