Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

Probably a hint of sarcasm there, but not directed at you, more at the ridiculousness of all this. To be fair, it’s likely to be that song that is the issue. It’s a nonsense. And I prefer the Up the Celts version myself. But point being, that one line, for all its worth, seems to generate more attention than the illegal chants of bigoted and racist hate going on elsewhere. It defies any kind of logic.

‘Are you really saying that the people that sang these songs had this outcome as their objective?????

and can you tell me what % of 60k support you speak for, just for clarification’

No not at all. Although I admit my text did read like that. No I mean that our club has requested us not to sing add ons. Some have not accepted these requests and im annoyed that our good name is now to be questioned.

Also I dont ‘speak for’ any percentage. However presuming it is ok to express my opinion on this site then it is my opinion that the majority of the home crowd would rather the add ons were left in the pub/home/whatever etc.

Who’s your post aimed at? I don’t recall one poster here who said that they sing these apparently illicit chants, yet you direct your anger at what you imply to be a sizeable number.

When did you last hear someone commit this offence to your better nature? Did you voice your disapproval at the time? I would hope so, as self-policing has been a big part of the Celtic community to date.

But more to the point, what specific song or chant are you referring to – and I’d appreciate a real specific, not just a reference to “IRA chanting”?

  10. The BBC website’s report on the UEFA fine shows a picture of a set-to between Celtic and Rennes players. This was of course totally untypical of a match played in a great atmosphere.

But it’s typical of the media onslaught – sometimes crude and obvious and sometimes more subtle – that is being waged against our club at present.

When oh when is our club going to speak out against the unprecedented (?) media campaign against our club? Remember Willie Maley in 1906. Why don’t any of our present administrators have any cojones?

    Over to you, Mr Lawwell.

  11. gordybhoy64

There has been an orchestrated attempt by the Board and more recently the manager in recent times to distance the club from the Pro IRA chants, to no avail.

Now that we officially have been found guilty by the games governing body, this will add grist to the mill with the clubs attempts to stamp out the illicit chants.

  12. Sorry to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but the pantomime we are watching is clearly scripted. The script writers are politicians, police and footballing authorities who all have their various agendas. For example, it is difficult to believe that the same match commander acted twice without the appropriate authority from those above – he would know the political consequences from this and potential effect on his career if he was acting alone.

It is also difficult to believe that the Scottish Government and police are not in constant dialogue with the footballing authorities here and in Europe and do not pursue their agenda. Of course they do.

The only thing I haven’t made up my mind about yet is the extent to which Celtic plc are inside the tent with the others pissing out or on the outside getting pissed on.

If we cut out the RA songs there wont be a problem .If we dont there will be- a big one. We need to put our own house in order.

    …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

You’re absolutely correct and have summed it up in a nutshell. It doesn’t matter what your perspective on the IRA is, chanting pro IRA slogans at a football match is offensive to many people. Eddie Smith reported it but anyone else is also free do so. Many Celtic supporters on here have reported the opposition to EUFA in the past in the hope that some sort of action would be taken against them. Action was taken against them – it is now being taken against us.

Many of us want to leave the SFA behind and play in England. To expect to be able to do that and still condone pro IRA chanting at our games is an exercise in futility. A lot of people in England would probably want to see Celtic play down south but would have second thoughts about the baggage we bring in terms of the overt support that many of our supporters display for the IRA.

There is a time and there are various places to sing about support for the IRA for those who do. Football matches involving Celtic FC are not.

  20. Hugely disappointed at this.

I have been to dozens of games in Italy were the chanting of communist, or fascist slogans has been open and unmistakable. Racism is also a regular feature of crowd behaviour in Italy.

Compared to these games, CP is an absolute haven of safety and sanity. Indeed, thanks to the GB and the Rennes fans, the atmosphere that night was superb.

The blame for this fiasco lies at the door of Strathclyde Police and their SNP political masters. I sincerely that no Celtic fan will be giving their vote to the party of Willie Wolfe, Christine Graham, Hunza Yusef, and Alex Salmond again.

    Enemies all…

  21. Apologies if this is old news, read the Di Canio interview in the Guardian there. Of his time in Glasgow he says:

“hatred can be good. But you don’t hate someone just because they’re a Protestant”!!

    Eh? Whats that about?

Outwith the top clubs in the european leagues, the standard of football is brutal.

With our full compliment fit and available, I believe we are capable of giving any team a game, the likes of Barca obviously not, but looking at games involving Bolton, Villa, Blackburn and the like, even with our depleated team I reckon we could beat any of them.

I think we have a chance against Udinese, after that who knows, WGS took us to heights nobody thought possible.

100% Correct, just the same as those who are having a go at the fans as well. Until we we find out what we are being fined for, and whether the club believe there are grounds for appeal, we cannot have a serious discussion.

Till know all I’ve seen is bluster, speculation and hearsay.
