Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

  1. what happened today that I should be upset about?

    we got fined for nothing?

    why should I be suprised?

  2. any debate on this fine is pointless until uefa or celtic actually come out and actually tell us what they considered “illicit”; the club has a duty to release this information to their “customers” and if they dont know they must find out asap

the “you know what we mean” reason does not cut it, not when celtic fans fine reputation is being traduced in this way; wont stop the laptop loyalists trying to say this is about “sectarianism” (shakes head)

    They are not saying nothing.

Your diocesan bishop is the one who put his name to an official statement on the recent statistics that we did manage to wrestle out of the Crown Office’s grasp. It was on November 18 2011.

genuine question… not looking to antagonize…. and no, I’m not a Nat

Labour held power at a national level for years, and at a local level for generations… why did they not address this when they had the political clout to do so, why weren’t the police instructed to improve their efforts at applying current anti-sectarian legislation at football grounds when the chanting was at its worst?

  5. Lads i am not wan’t to say i told you so but earlier on 1 of my posts i said i have a funny feeling Mr Lawell has something to do with this and now looking at phils tweets it may be correct but i hope I’m wrong.

have you been in discussion with the responsible persons at the Catholic Church with regard to this ?

parliamentary officer John Deighan, media spokesman Peter Kearney, Cardinal O’Brien

in addition to the fact that on an daily / hourly basis on a global scale the Church is proclaiming prayer, fasting, penance, reception of the sacraments, conversion etc with a view towards changing the hearts of all human persons toward love….and that include the scumbag hypocrites who make a mess of it from WITHIN the Church, some of whom should be given a serious roasting at best or imprisoned at worst !

and also, where are the athiests, the humanists, the Jews, Muslems and all the rest of the folk from this frequently claimed broad church that is CFC ?

why don’t these folk get together and tell Eck n Nicky where to go ?

According to Radio Clyde the club were notified of the fine and nothing more.

Nowhere else to go then at the moment.

When – or if the club are informed by UEFA exactly what is illicit I’m confident they would pass that information on.

    Why would they not?

I beg to differ mi amigo, having a go at the supporters is having a go at Celtic.

Celtic as a club are nothing without the support, the support are Celtic, without their support the club dies, simple in my mind.

Those ‘lost`sectarian crime statistics were clearly more than embarrassing, they must have been truly horrifying and coupled with the outcome of of the trial for the assault of Neil over in Alabama, would have blown the false picture of many faiths… not just out of the water, but into orbit around the moon. You can understand why the SNP wanted to bury this, in collusion with the police. It paints a pretty nasty picture of life in Scotland if you’re a member of minority community.

The Church was instrumental in pushing for the publication of these figures, and as you know, Prof Devine pleaded with Christine Grahame and the Justice Comittee Review to await their publication.

But I share NegAnon2’s concerns that since the meeting with the SNP which co-incided with the “loss” of these crucial stats, the Church has been silent on the matter? Or maybe I’m mistaken? – as I’m not a practicing Catholic I have to rely on what the objective, agenda-free Scottish media decide to publish :/

It saddens me that I heard little from them on the matter of the “lost” statistics.

Also, please don’t take what I’m saying as an attack on the Church. I’m questioning why Celtic PLC & the Church are allowing these matters to go unaddressed. They have very different areas to defend, but the common demoninator is that they are both up against anti-Catholic bigotry.

As the FAC demonstration proved, without an official body making a stand for its respective community, we are virtually powerless.

I am critcal of Labour on many fronts at a national level, Jack MacConnell did have go and brought in Section 74 to the 2003 Act which if applied by the Police would have went a long to tackling the problem.

The Police in Strathclyde are institutionaly sectarian in my opinion, and is the opinion of many serving officers.

Politicians have not been brave enough to tackle the Police, if the data had been destroyed in an English force on another ethnic group the Home Secretary would come under pressure to resign, why has this not happened in Scotland

  22. ive seen quite a few today saying that this decision over illicit chanting will open up a can of worms………….. it wont.

Scotland is a small country in Uefa terms and they will fine us and rangers all day long, English and Spanish teams – no way.

to me this was always going to happen ever since they were reported to Uefa for the billy boys and the famine song – we had the power of the internet – they have the mainstream media and guys with top positions in the government and the peelers…sorry there is only going to be 1 winner there and it was never going to be us.

drop the ra chants – what comes next? they dont like the soldiers song and the fields and are offended by them – is that the next part of this game?

very quiet from Celtic today you would almost think Lawell and co are quite happy with todays result – a kind of “see, we told yous this would happen, but yous didnt listen”

what does it say for the SPL/SFA as well – they found us not guilty and UEFa have found us guitly

  24. could someone tell me what is this thing about rangers fans and chelsea ,and why did it come about, in the epl is there a team were celtic supporters have a soft spot for.

  25. Celtic First – yes I am aware of that – but where is the anger and the persistent complaints and where is the statement decrying the bill?

And what did the Church have to say about the missing records?

I know you are very loyal to the Church but I’m sorry they are only playing at it here and you’ve got to ask yourself why

Kojo – yes you are right – I guess thats just the definition of politics we disagree on then? Its such a pity that their machiavellian approach doesnt include actually looking after their flock eh?

  26. Fortuné’s Favour Mibbes

To suggest that the stats went missing after a meeting between the Church and the SNP and that the Church stayed silent is almost completely the opposite of what really happened.

Bishop Tartaglia met the first minister on October 7. The bishop issued a statement afterwards, which included this:

“I particularly welcome the First minister’s commitment to track and analyse sectarian crime on an on-going basis using all data relating to Section 74 of the Criminal Justice Scotland Act 2003. Clearly, we cannot tackle a problem without first measuring it.”

This is in keeping with what John Deighan and Prof Devine said to Christine Grahame’s committee in September and in keeping with what the Church has been saying on this subject since 2004 at least.

Seeing that he had been deceived when the executive issued the stats that it finally did release, Bishop Tartaglia made his November 17 statement. He did not stay silent and he offered the practical help of Catholic agencies to assist the police in their attempts to understand and analyse what is going on in Scotland.

  27. the glorious balance sheet on

During the weekend just past there were numerous serious assaults in Scotland and two unexplained deaths – source BBC.

There are also weather and travel warnings in force due to severe snowstorms predicted across Central Scotland during rush hour tomorrow.

You would therefore think that at this time police energies would be fully focused on their murder and serious crime enquiries and public appeals for information in the light of the weekend`s events, and also in giving safety advice with regard to tomorrow`s forecasted weather and travelling conditions.

Strange then that someone at the Scottish police twitter has, in these challenging times, the capacity to post no fewer than thirteen links to stories on UEFA fining Celtic for “illicit chanting.”

You might find this hard to believe, but Chelsea have quite a lot of fans in Ireland and I’ve seen the tri-colour at Chelsea games. Not as clear cut as you’d think.

It’s the Chelsea scum element that rangers fans associate with.
