Job done by those who wanted illicit chanting confrontation

1049

Make what you wish of Strathclyde Police reporting Celtic fans for “illicit chanting” to a Uefa match observer in October, the bottom line is that Uefa have fined Celtic €15,000 (around £12,700), established a benchmark for future action and more importantly sullied the club’s reputation.

Job done by those who wanted this confrontation to happen.

So what you are saying is the decision was perverse. Why didn’t you just say that? :))))

Superb post and I hope Celtic appeal this with total commitment.

Have to agree though. The chanting has to left at the gate.

Good post. I second your request for the Celtic PLC to make a stand in defence of its supporters.

I’ve defended them here often enough in the past…but this is something I’ve seen them negligent in, and I hope they respond suitably. The supporters have had to endure verbal attacks and misrepresentation from the meeja to a terrible extreme, and the recent behaviour of the polis is worrying.

Why their silence on these issues?

For those saying we need to wait to see what the UEFA charge is before they can react; my concern is their failure in the past two seasons to defend our reputation against those who set out with an agenda to sully it.

They are the only people with a specific remit and the power to speak up in defence of our support.

We’ve seen some debate now tonight on why the Catholic Chuch aren’t doing enough, QED, and politicians ….so what is the reason for the deafening silence coming from Celtic Park while there are those determined to rip it to shreds acting with total impunity??

Why can`t all the wee pygmy politicians on C.Q.N. be done with it and form a political party which can engage in wedge politics and ,in the fullness of time, may end up holding the balance of power in Scotland ?

That way you could leave Celtic to the supporters.

Is it because nobody would vote for you?

  10. TopCorner @ 21:43

I mentioned that I hoped the Catholic Church would be more vocal, but in the post I specified, not in relation to Celtic, but in advising the practising congregation of the recent events at Holyrood, as those that have no involvement with football or Celtic, will be largely unaware of what has been brought to light, unless the read the CO.

    Just to clarify.

The reason for bringing the Church into tonight’s debate is simply because it represents the Catholic community who it seems these “lost” statistics would prove have an unfairly large percentrage share of the victim status in sectarian crime.

You’ve captured my thoughts exactly on the matter.

Anything that gets us into trouble, that tarnishes our reputation, that allows lazy journalists and lazy readers to call us the same as them we should not sing. Simple as.

But should that song get us into trouble? (And also, was that song even sung?! I’d like to see some proof to be frank, because I wasn’t aware of any.) If the charge is for that song, then someone somewhere has some explaining to do – is that a person at the top of the censure tree, and HMV, iTunes etc, or is that a person at the top of UEFA, Scottish Government and Strathclyde Police. Either way, it simply doesn’t make sense for it to be a song which is ok under every circumstance other than inside Celtic Park. I don’t see a distinction. It’s either ok, or it’s not.

For the record, I believe “up the Celts” is the line that should continue to be sung. Let them come after us for that. I’d love to see them try.

  20. Celtic First – a spirited defence which you are entitled to.

However my argument is inherently simple – the catholic church did offer a brief sojourn into the debate (I believe this was the Bishop of Paisley – where I currently live). However the objections died after a meeting with Mr Salmond and nothing has been heard since.

The joke of destroyed records and now the clear intention to disguise records and they say nothing. Years and years of prejudice and sectarianism and now the law seeks to outlaw aspects of catholicism and to criminalise Celtic fans and they say nothing.

They have made a deal with the devil my friend – it will end in tears.

I will write to them and ask them for their view but no doubt I will be ignored.

I actually think the best thing to do would be for us all to go to Chapel and stand up and demand answers when the priest starts his wee talk – ask him to talk about why the church arent defending us. That would create a bit of noise?

As for Celtic FC – on the edge of oblivion – you can only attack your, ahem, customers for so long before they realise the enemy is within.

Kojo – the catholic church doesnt do politics – now that is utter bo@@ox my friend

Cardinal O’Brien issued two statements in 2006 urging the Scottish Executive “to establish as a matter of urgency a mechanism which will allow the publication of such crucial data on a far more regular and timely basis”.

When John Deighan appeared at Holyrood alongside Prof Devine in September, he said on the record that this request has been repeated many times in the intervening five years and that the executive had promised to deliver the stats. It was at that point that Prof Devine said not just the stats but proper analysis of them was essential, but you can see from the 2006 statements that the Cardinal was onto this half a decade ago.
