Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

“…there is a very high risk that we will get knocked out before the serious stuff begins in September of each season. We had a good attempt at doing this against Karagandy.”

Ryecatcher, it’s all about opinions of course, but my memory of the first leg is feeling very comfortable with things as the game progressed, waiting for the inevitable goal we were going to score when we eventually took one of the number of chances we were creating in the away leg of the tie, then two individual errors/howlers undid us. In the home leg we were faced with a bunch of very rough (verging on violent) players who dived and lay down (cheating) at every turn and I was so happy that they eventually lost a goal in time-added-on that they had contributed to with their play-acting.

Over the 120 minutes+ of the tie I thought we were well worth our victory, but of course, this being football nothing is guaranteed and not every ‘big’ team in Europe made it through to the Champions league this and earlier years.

The club is wending it’s way through difficult waters and is, IMO, doing not a bad job. There will no doubt be times when things don’t go as we would like, but that’s football.

We all realise just how poor Sally is as a coach and I’m pretty sure that most of them are slowly coming to that realisation. However, until they, do can those in charge (whoever that is these days!) afford to sack him? This could do further harm to their already meagre income.

Once again, for the sake of clarity, I don’t mean the spivs.

    Spivs will be spivs.

What about the ‘real’ ‘Rangers’ ‘men’?

When are they going to say: “We don’t actually need the second-biggest football budget in Scotland to win the third tier. We didn’t need it to win the fourth tier either. This has to stop before we suffer an insolvency event.”

That’s why I was so surprised at his performance against Costa Rica, he looked really physically strong whereas I recall thinking he was lightweight and off the pace when he played against Inverness this season and Motherwell last season.

Hopefully if he is given another shot in the Celtic team he’ll take it. The Australian media and national coach are applying pressure on him to move on – even if only on loan – to get first team football ahead of the World Cup. I’d rather that Tom Rogic in the form he showed tonight stayed at Celtic. We’ll just have to see how things pan out over the next few weeks.

We need to be ready. Karagandy were never going to knock us out but we may not be as lucky with the draw next season. We need to be prepared.

DD and PL may think like the majority of us, that if they never see the deid club again, it will be too soon. The deid club might be back sometime, and Celtic FC should ensure that they do have the quality players to continue to win the league and progress in Europe. The SFA will never change, as the men in black would be on a mission, same as it ever was. But we could be, should be,so far in front, we won’t have to worry about that mob again. They are on the road to nowhere. We have the ball at our feet, let’s hope we use it. HH

I was just talking to a guy at work there and he said that Celtic need a captain and I have been banging on here about Roy Aitken type player for a couple of seasons.

If you could bring one player from the past though and put him in the current side who would it be?

I would bring Paul McStay in myself but I am one of his biggest fans.

Henrik is the obvious choice but Paul McStay was a fine player in his day and a great Celt.

  26. Why do some of us need it pointed out that Celtic has no need for the aggravation that a Fankenstein Govan club would bring ?

Nobody associated with Celtic could rationally want to see the return of an entity which would threaten the club’s guaranteed future wellbeing & prosperity…. Especially when that entity is a malevolent & hostile long-standing enemy.

Not Dermot Desmond, not Neil Lennon, not Peter Lawwell,… NOT ANYBODY wants such an outcome. Of course some of them will, for one reason or another, make public utterances to the contrary. A poker player is never going to indicate that he is sitting with a full-house.

As Auldheid has pointed out, Celtic are in a better place than EVER before.

So why do some of us see it otherwise ?

Is it too straightforward for some of them to take on board ?

Maybe one of them will tell me
