Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

Deadmau5 the renowned Electronic music superstar is well-known for being controversial when it comes to Social Media and Twitter especially. His recent online spats have involved a weird selection of artists such as Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Tiesto to name just a few.

Deadmau5 recently caused a Twitter uproar when he named one of his new productions IRA, which although seemingly harmless is an acronym that has many different meanings. Unfortunately for those from Ireland (and the UK) the most infamous acronym is that of the Irish Republican Army (which you can Wikipedia for a brief rundown of the background of Irish History if you are that way inclined). What followed was an explosion of tweets which resulted in an extremely confused Mau5.

The following tweet resulted in Deadmau5 having his twitter account suspended & shortly after the Mau5 posted an official statement stating that his management will take over his Twitter as he is taking a step back for personal reasons.

His last tweet said – “what the F*** is “UP THE RA”?

I don’t believe that PL is the big, bad, bogey man that many claim him to be. Nor do I think that he’s faultless or blameless in some of the issues that many Celtic supporters are unhappy with.

You are quite correct however, he is a shrew man who isn’t prone to making public comments without consideration.

In my opinion his remark about the Huns at the AGM was a deliberate statement to deflect from other issues including the Living Wage and Resolution 12.

Fair play to him, to a large extent it worked.

  7. Auldheid…..a bigger risk than an uncorrected Deadclub is losing in the CL qualifiers,in my honest opinion.

Deadclub will not challenge for a title for at least 5 years after entry(not re-entry as Desmond would have us believe) to the SPL.

At our current rate of investment and in an arena of ever diminishing returns….there is a very high risk that we will get knocked out before the serious stuff begins in September of each season. We had a good attempt at doing this against Karagandy.

  8. BMCW/ Auldheid/ 67Heaven/ angelgabriel – thanks for your replies.

FFP – don’t want to clutter up the blog so here’s a good link explaining the theory:

    http://www.financialfairplay.co.uk/

If you scroll down to an article 18/09/13 – Widening gap between elite clubs and ‘the rest’ it uses Celtic and Manchester City turnovers and CL income as an example.

UEFA appear to have set April 2014 as the deadline date for implementation. Now call me cynical – but I wonder why the CFC Board have put so much emphasis into this year’s set of figures (and to all intents and purposes are targeting similar these next few years)?

Fag-packet maths here! Assuming a continuous £76M T/O (based on this year) = a £38M FPP wage ratio for CFC (with CL qualification).

Compare and contrast with a certain ‘entity’ currently losing circa £1M per month. If they were to return (survive to 2015/16) with limited commercial income (and saleable assets) – they are likely to be circa £25M (or more) behind us in competitive wage terms.

Our only concern should be – can we continue to maintain this current formula? Buy, develop, sell-on and qualify for the CL year-in/ year-out?

$64K Question – Can we stimulate the support and keep them on board domestically these next 5 years?

I’m on holiday in Australia at the moment and went to the Australia- Costa Rica match tonight. Im glad i did as I saw a very good performance from Tom Rogic.

He came on after 60 minutes with the score at 0-0, within 20 seconds of coming on he left 3 men for dead in a 50 yard run to the edge of the Costa Rica box.

He completed another 2 similar dribbles from midfield that had Costa Rica bamboozled and helped Australia win the game. I was very impressed with his strength on the ball and direct play.

He got a rousing reception when he came on – the Australian fans really rate him.

I realise its only an international friendly but he showed enough to make me think he could give us a more direct attacking threat from midfield and maybe take some of the load off Joe Ledley’s shoulders in terms of contributing goals from midfield.

Costa Rica have qualified for the World Cup and weren’t shy with their challenges but Rogic got right in about them and took the game to them and they couldn’t handle it.

Rogic has it in him to be a quality player. I hope he shows it in a Celtic jersey.

It really is inconceivable that anyone could come to the conclusion that we would be better off, financially, or IN ANY OTHER WAY, with them back……….even the other SPL Clubs are starting to believe that they can achieve European games…….it is a much improved environment without the cheating zombies, to whom ‘sport’ does not come into the equation.

  13. To suffer insolvency by chasing the SPL and a run in Europe is bad enough.

Imagine suffering insolvency by over-spending to win the fourth and third tiers of Scottish football.

tgbs – I really hope you’re right about Rogic, but I watched him closely during the Morton LC game and I was disappointed in how easily he lost possession. He needs to adapt to the game here and toughen up a bit.

Me…I see it as putting yer money into a big building and being told to stand ootside after doing so. Fergus said when he would leave the club that there would be supporter ownership and that the club would belong to the fans ? So what happened there then ?

I lost faith in Fergus when – after ‘using’ influential fholk to win the hearts n minds of the Celtic support to win control of the club for the ‘rebels’ by the ousting of the old ‘bored’ he slammed the door shut after the 1st share issue and got rid of the ‘rebels’ one by one and, until this day there isny one ‘rebel on the ‘bored’ who, for me, run a plastic version of the Celtic Fc that I grew up with
