Joe Baker, Hargreaves, Fraser, playing to the galleries

908

Neil Lennon’s suggestion that fostering Fraser Forster from a lower-league loaner to an England international is “one of the best things [he’s] been involved with as a manager” is difficult to dispute, despite his various trophies and Champions League exploits.

Owen Hargreaves earned an England cap before he made an appearance in either of England’s top two divisions, although he was playing with European champions, Bayern Munich at the time.  Hargreaves and Lanarkshire’s Joe Baker are the only two to have been capped for England without playing in any of the country’s four leagues.  I’ve no idea if there are any others to have earned a cap without having played in the top two division but there must be precious few.

In short, Fraser’s appearance between the sticks on Friday was exceptional.  We can now help fulfil the international ambitions of English players, just as long as we continue to compete in the Champions League.

Playing to the galleries

There’s a great line in the movie, Wall St, when Martin Sheen says, “If you live long enough you get to see everything”.  Today we got to see the incredible sight of Craig Whyte’s former PR, who represented him before and during his Outstanding Contribution to Scotland, who in fact, represented him well before this, when Whyte was stalking STV as they teetered on the brink of oblivion, use Twitter to turn on another member of the Whyte coterie, for being a part of the Whyte coterie.

It reads like playing to the gallery, which the Daily Record, is a particularly useful punch bag for.  No one cares what you say about the Daily Record, so exploit a common enemy and pile on.  Tub thumping like this is embarrassing.

Puppet master

It will be interesting to see if the Record investigate who first suggested Whyte turned his attention to Rangers, after his STV ambitions ended….

The very fact that Campbell “EBT” Ogilvie is still in office is incredible.

Worse still, he was re-elected this year UNOPPOSED ! ! !

Shame on not just our club, but the rest of the SPL clubs who were cheated over the EBT scandal and kept quiet when he was re-elected.

    GERS’ NEW £280m IBROX

RANGERS will become the first club in Britain

to build a stadium boasting a retractable roof

    and hovering pitch.

The new Ibrox – which will cost £280million

    – will be based on Japan’s Sapporo Dome,

    Holland’s Amsterdam ArenA and Cardiff’s

Millennium Stadium and is part of a £750m

    village development earmarked for Govan.

When complete in 2012, it will generate

millions of pounds every season for the club

to buy top players and be more competitive

with Premiership clubs in the transfer market.

Supporters will virtually be able to “raise the

roof” of the new project, as it will open and

close depending on the weather and functions

    being held inside the auditorium.

The blueprint allows for football and other

sports to be played around the clock and with

the pitch capable of being rotated in and out

of the ground itself, rock concerts and other

major events can be hosted without any

    damage to the grass.

Giant heaters and air conditioning units will

ensure spectators will be in a constant

comfort zone and matches will never again be

    cancelled because of under-foot conditions.

Talks are at an advanced stage and funding

is in place for the six-star stadium, which

    would become the second-biggest club

ground in the UK after Manchester United’s

    Old Trafford.

A capacity of around 70,000 is planned –

20,000 higher than the current full house,

10,000 more than at Celtic Park and 17,000

    above the limit at Hampden.

Last night an Ibrox insider revealed the

project could start within 18 months with a

    two-year build programme anticipated.

He said: “This is a very exciting and

ambitious scheme which will totally revitalise

    the area.

Not only will it benefit the team, and the club

in general, but the whole south side of the

    city will be transformed.’’

Just a wee note on the CO front.

That is by no means a dead issue, however, as I understand it there was a great reluctance on the part of any reasonable alternative to stand for the position for a variety of reasons.

Alternatives were suggested but they apparently declined and could not be persuaded to put their name forward in the current circumstances.

  14. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

    Morning all

Yesterday evening a few of us attended a meeting regarding the recent events in Amsterdam and the current plight of the 8 Celtic supporters who have been charged and bailed and the 2 who still remain in custody in Holland. The main purpose of the meeting was to make arrangements for a bucket collection which will help establish a legal defence fund and enable all those involved to have appropriate representation when their cases go to trial.

Eight of those charged, including Andy and Padraig who remain in prison, will appear in court on Thursday, while the other 2 will have to wait until January before their cases are held.

A Dutch lawyer has agreed to represent all of those charged and he will be flying to Glasgow tomorrow (Tuesday) to take statements and meet with those involved. Clearly, his expertise and skills will not come cheaply and consequently the idea of a bucket collection came about as a means of meeting these costs.

Celtic Football Club has been extremely helpful so far and indeed have granted permission for those involved to collect within the stadium itself, the first time that this has been allowed. However, for this to be a success it is essential that there are sufficient volunteers with buckets to gather money from those wishing to make donations…..and this is where you can help!

If you are able to give up a few hours of your time on Saturday up until kick off then I implore you to register your interest at Dambhoys8@yahoo.co.uk

All evidence so far, suggests that these were completely innocent Celtic supporters who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The purpose of the collection is to allow the Legal Defence Fund not to only give these bhoys the opportunity of a fair hearing but also to expose, where applicable any alleged brutality and negligence of the Dutch police and authorities.

  16. BRT&H

I think you are bang on with your post on the reappointment of CO as head of the SFA, I mean who in there right mind would pUt themselves forward for that job? There is a cluster#%^* heading for Hampden sooner rather than later, so you may as well have the guy who was up to his neck in it as point man.

I also heard from a good source that Celtic have photos of most of the guilty Ajax fans who caused the trouble at Celtic Park, and when have what they need, they will be sending them to Holland for the Dutch police to make arrests as charges will follow, and the reason that they where not lifted at Celtic park was a numbers thing, meaning if there was say about 50 or 60 guilty of bad behavior at the time, it would have taken at least two or three security or police to take them away and that would have weakened the safety barrier shielding the family section at Celtic park, has anyone heard about this?

  17. Yorkbhoy….

I seriously think the ones down here are embarrassed about what they have done and are distancing themselves from the shame of association with them.

I know a guy who lives in Bridgnorth, born in darkest West Lothian, who used to be a huge Deadclub fan.Never a bigot in my company but would always stick up for his team and still got back up the road to watch them at least half a dozen times per season.

Met him briefly by chance, shopping in Merry Hill a couple of months ago, and he was wearing a an Arsenal shirt…….hmmmmmmm……I think their 500 million followers outside of Scotland are dwindling.

    ……don’t yeez awe understand ?

Some say that – Neil only hands oot an olive branch for ‘political’ reasons ?

Some say that DD is doing the same ?

And yet, the same fholk will tell ye that – Keevins is spineless if he toes the same

‘party political line’ as the two mentioned towers of ‘ Celticness’ ????

    Nah – don’t think so !!!!

Does Keevins not have a family to be concerned aboot in this nice wee place ?

Probably the grandest twist yet is the so called hero(?) Alex Thompson who apparently

    Naw he didny. imo

AT took a ‘cheap’ swipe at Keevins and then flew away to where ever he came from to the relative safety of his family – unlike Keevins who was amongst 25 SMSM fholk ‘threatened by the same mob who have – Neil & DD – toeing the ‘party political line’.imo

Phil Mac revealed the above stuff about the – 25 fholk btw – check his archives.

  20. Just off the phone to my old man. Discussed what I believe to be the most significant event of late in the Sevco saga, the action to cease the process to wind-up Sevco 5088.

I was hoping Paul McC would do a report on the legal significance of the event.

My speculation is that perhaps Sevco FC have realised that Sevco 5088 do in fact own the assets of Sevco FC and that if Sevco 5088 is wound-up, so are Sevco FC.

    Just idle speculation of course….

  21. kev jungle- 2 questions

    1. We’re you at the AGM on Friday?

    2. If yes, why didn’t you get up and ask PL about him selling the spine of the team?

  22. Kevjungle ….

Bang on in your assessment of Peter Lawell playing the AGM crowd like a fiddle with his Rory comparison ( which is an old joke from when the CVA was rejected at Deadclub btw).

Will qualify that last statement by saying not all of the crowd would have lapped it up.I wasn’t there ….but when you consider Lawell’s absent gaffer’s opinion on needing The Orcs back in the top league, then we realise that was about all the slack Dermot would have cut him the night before the AGM, in their phone call about what he was allowed to say to deflect he real issues and placate the masses.

It was no ad lib remark….Lawell aint no Kevin Bridges mate.

Totally obvious and scripted…..so obvious that Stevie Wonder would have seen it coming.

    Big Lassies from Eastern Europe?

I blame Hebcelt — he has been sending them out by post for years — they come free with a dozen Stornaway Black Puddings.

Alternatively, in the midst of the depression you could also order any number of short housebuilders and even the occasional banker but they came in a hamper basket full of smoked haddies, oatcakes, black puddings and malts.

Some people call it a cottage Industry although I can exclusively reveal that the authorities think it is suspiciously close to the slave trade.

It is the great black pudding cover up scandal.

Personally I am a haggis man myself — you get a far better quality of large Eastern block woman with a haggis order in my humble opinion.

  24. Ryecatcher

I know of a few ex huns who now go and watch Ayr and Greenock Morton. They have dissappeared off the radar as far as England is concerned. I’ve also heard from various people that a few quite big Rangers supporters clubs have closed including Corby.

  25. Mea Culpa

    09:16

More serious than that, I think.

If Sevco 5088 had the right to buy Rangers from Duff and Phelps and Duff and Phelps were duped into selling to Sevco Scotland instead, all the activities of The Rangers Football Club come under severe scrutiny, including the flotation last year, including the results of their team on the park.

How much do you think it would take to get Craig Whyte to do walking away? And would he still own Ibrox and Murray Park?

Incidentally, the draft of the five-way agreement that Charlotte posted online refers very specifically to Sevco Scotland as being one of the five. Perhaps the game would be a bogey with the five-way agreement too.

I defy even Sandy Bryson to side-step all of these issues.

  26. Yorkbhoy……
