Ladbrokes SPFL use Level5 to dig into Celtic

656

Level 5, the PR company born out of the need to convince Newco fans to back one specific camp, have been given the Ladbrokes SPFL contract. Promotion of the SPFL is the responsibility of sponsor, Ladbrokes, who also pay for PR, this was not a decision by the league or member clubs.

Their brief is to manage the news and keep the words Ladbrokes SPFL in the news. Recent coverage has been a case in point.

Yesterday’s newspapers gave an excellent example of how this is operating.  Ladbrokes wanted their app promoted for free in the newspapers. Their Level 5 performed to task, the Evening Times ran with:

“Murdo was promoting a new Ladbrokes ’Track Your Acca’ app which allows punters to track their bets and cash out on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

While the Daily Record ran with:

“MacLeod was promoting a new Ladbrokes ‘Track Your Acca’ app that allows punters to track bets on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

Both a copy and paste from the press release.

Here’s the rub, though. The bait for both Ladbrokes adverts was Murdo having a go at two different Celtic players. The League’s sponsor is employing a PR company, who could have chosen any subject at 42 clubs, but they chose to have a dig at Celtic players.  Digging at Celtic players is one of the most reliable ways to ensure your comment runs in the newspapers.

That PR company just happens to be staffed by a former employee of a club who can hardly make a public comment without proclaiming their desire to bring down Celtic.

Ladbrokes got their promotion and two Celtic players were used as fuel, this is unacceptable. The League sponsor cannot employ a PR company who have enjoyed such a close relationship with a PR-dependent club, while undermining Celtic.

It is a fundamental conflict of interest and has to stop, Celtic cannot be cannon-fodder for the SPFL sponsor. Ladbrokes are representing the League on PR matters and cannot undermine the Celtic in this way.  The SPFL cannot allow their competition to be undermined by partisan promotion.

Let @Ladbrokes know your thoughts.

  1. Poor wee Craigy bhoy gone bankrupt.

    This catches the eye..

A spokesman for Ticketus said: “Ticketus is pleased with the outcome of today’s hearing and will now support the appointment of a trustee in Bankruptcy, who can start the process of claiming any assets that Mr Whyte holds for the benefit of Mr Whyte’s creditors.”

    What assets does he have?

  2. Talking about James Forest, it’s not that long ago he was a newcomer, with terrific potential. At that time we were offered a young man name of Vladimir Weiss, whose father was a former team mate of Lubo. Weiss was good, but we thought rightly that JF was better, and there wasn’t room for two similar right sided wide players. We had to decline the offer. Weiss signed for RFC (now In Liquidation).

The so called sports’ journalists at the time voiced grave concern at the treatment that young Weiss would get at the hands of the hatchet men arund Scottish football. They needn’t have worried of course. Vladimir was given all the protection afforded by the laws of the game, and more besides. As T. Butcher memorably said in another context, you couldn’t step into his magnetic field, but it was a free kick against you, and a booking.

Not so for young James F, who was often on the receiving end of treatment you’d expect in cage fighting. The men in black seldom did more than award a free kick if that.

I could never understand how people who considered themselves patriotic Scots could jeer and snigger as James would pick himself up after another bone crunching, instep stamping, or high and late challenge and limp away, definitely slowed down, possibly finished in the match, and maybe out for weeks thereafter. After all this was a talented young international prospect, and Lord knows we have few enough of those. His potential for Scotland didn’t seem to matter, as long as his talents were denied to Celtic. The young man sure has guts.

I may be wrong, but I suspect James’s injury problems go back to those wild and largely unpunished foul in every sense tackles he suffered as a young player. I don’t know where Vladimir Weiss is now.

  3. Lubo the lamp

From you link Wee Jamesie on socerbase is more Wee Jamesie, because they have him at 5’5

Maybe Wiki measured him after his quiff, there’s no way he’s 5’9 in his stocking soles,

and someone maybe a generous relative wrote his wiki entry.

  4. Some very sensible comments about our latest candidate (albeit repeat offender) for scapegoat of the moment.

There may be reasons why JF had a poor-ish game last night but, ultimately, he did and the manager took the necessary action.

In his defence, I will say he has had one bad game in a row, so I don’t feel inclined to start talking about his future. Only one thing will determine whether JF’s future is with Celtic or elsewhere and that is his fitness record. When fit, he is a very useful weapon. If our sports scientists and physios think they can get 25 games (or more) a season out of him then he stays because of his talent. If he has another season of fewer than 20 starts, he may become a luxury. It is only October and he has played, according to Wiki, 7 times, so far in 3 months. He will need to more than treble that in the remaining 7 months off the season. That should be achievable.

P.S. I have no idea, nor do many of us, if there has been genuine transfer interest in the player in the past few years and, if so, at what level. The presence or absence of a tabloid rumour adds no weight to the actual truth.

  5. BSR, re James Forrest, can remember a video on here playing them at Murray Park as weans. He was brilliant, ripped them to shreds but, was also booted up and down the park.

Your task now is to track down that video and shut the Feckers Up.

  6. Just browsed through the photos of Celtic The Awakening. The first ones were of the days when I first was a regular at Celtic Park. Bitter sweet memories, as we won nothing until the never to be forgotten 65 Final. Then all changed, changed utterly.

    WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED.

” The young man sure has guts”

Cant say I relate to all those games and bone crushing tackles and I don’t miss many, irrespective, that could be the reason he now runs towards the person on the ball as if to tackle and always pulls up,no contact.

I realise everyone has their favourites, and varied opinions, but if he was with Ross County he would not get a game as they survive on 100% involvement.

    Just my opinion.

  8. WILLMACUFREE,

JF was subject to the very same treatment against Hertz at Parkhead a couple of weeks ago. The MIB booked one guy after about 10 minutes. The same man continued to kick JF for the remainder of the game and got away with it. Paterson is his name. Their manager reckoned he used his experience after the booking!!!

  9. What is the Stars on

Starry plough I believe birthday greetings are due. Let’s hope you enjoy many more.

You happen to share your birthday with one of CQN’ S most handsome, erudite and witty contributors, who shall remain nameless

Your remark re: “scapegoat of the moment” is misplaced. The discussion today grew from a response I made to a BSR post. There was no attempt find a scapegoat – for a game we won? The game changed when Tom Rogic came on. The discussion developed from that. It’s a legitimate question to ask why we don’t always get the most from James and whether we can afford to keep a player in the first team who is inconsistent. I agree that in the past James has been used as a scapegoat.

  11. Good evening friends.

A few weeks ago there was a bit of debate on here about a Kodi box (I think). If I understand it correctly you buy this legal gadget for, what £100, plug it into a spare TV socket and then watch free football and movies with no furtehr charge.

Have I got that right? And are there different versions of the said box – presumably the more you pay the more you get? And as I’m pretty non-techie is it really just as easy as ‘plug and play’?

Aff oot for a bit but will check back later so thanks in advance for any advice.

Love this site – better than Google or that Jeeves bloke ;-)

  12. Sipsini

Thanks for your vote, hope he keeps ahead,a young lad with a great future ahead of him.HH

  13. I like JF but I always feel he makes the wrong decision when there are obvious or less orthodox ways of playing on the wing. He has talent but maybe he’s not making use of his full potential.

Someone should make a compilation of the matches where JF has made the wrong decisions and the next time he is injured he should watch it over and over again.

I received the same email from Ladbrokes! My reply to that was :

“I am confident that Ladbrokes are completely neutral. I am equally confident that Level 5 and the Scottish Media are not ! They are a toxic combination and Ladbrokes should have been better advised in their choice of a PR Company in Scotland. “

  16. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

    Strange but true fact:

Day after a cracking win, with two sublime goals, the central topic on Cqn is target and criticise our poorest player…..

  17. What is the Stars on

    Leftclicktic

That’s the nicest thing anyone ever said to me on here.

I tend not to get involved in birthday celebrations but my Butler tells me they are very popular with the lower orders/ working classes.

  18. Level 5, “Murder” McLoud and THAT tawdry downmarket tabloid………….

    Hmmmmmm,…….

    …a right guid team.

  19. Young James Forrest taking flak.

The system under Both RD and previously NL puts a huge burden on flair players.

We do not play an expansive style and emphasize keeping possession.

Our slow methodical style allows teams to set formidable defensive walls leaving us dependent on players like JF to unlock them.

Coupled with the referees subjective view in SPL as to what constitutes a legal tackle make Jf’s task incredibly difficult. It’s for good reason he id often injured.

In another league and team more condusive to his talents he would be a superstar

  22. Of course Ladbrokkes will not be fielding these messages which you guys are writing in.

Their appointed PR company will be doing that job.

I doubt anyone will notice until celtic supporters explain why no one is betting with these guys to the ladbrookes personnel at celtic on Saturday.

  23. Starry/ WITs,

    Happy Birthday lhads.
