Ladbrokes SPFL use Level5 to dig into Celtic

656

Level 5, the PR company born out of the need to convince Newco fans to back one specific camp, have been given the Ladbrokes SPFL contract. Promotion of the SPFL is the responsibility of sponsor, Ladbrokes, who also pay for PR, this was not a decision by the league or member clubs.

Their brief is to manage the news and keep the words Ladbrokes SPFL in the news. Recent coverage has been a case in point.

Yesterday’s newspapers gave an excellent example of how this is operating.  Ladbrokes wanted their app promoted for free in the newspapers. Their Level 5 performed to task, the Evening Times ran with:

“Murdo was promoting a new Ladbrokes ’Track Your Acca’ app which allows punters to track their bets and cash out on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

While the Daily Record ran with:

“MacLeod was promoting a new Ladbrokes ‘Track Your Acca’ app that allows punters to track bets on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

Both a copy and paste from the press release.

Here’s the rub, though. The bait for both Ladbrokes adverts was Murdo having a go at two different Celtic players. The League’s sponsor is employing a PR company, who could have chosen any subject at 42 clubs, but they chose to have a dig at Celtic players.  Digging at Celtic players is one of the most reliable ways to ensure your comment runs in the newspapers.

That PR company just happens to be staffed by a former employee of a club who can hardly make a public comment without proclaiming their desire to bring down Celtic.

Ladbrokes got their promotion and two Celtic players were used as fuel, this is unacceptable. The League sponsor cannot employ a PR company who have enjoyed such a close relationship with a PR-dependent club, while undermining Celtic.

It is a fundamental conflict of interest and has to stop, Celtic cannot be cannon-fodder for the SPFL sponsor. Ladbrokes are representing the League on PR matters and cannot undermine the Celtic in this way.  The SPFL cannot allow their competition to be undermined by partisan promotion.

Let @Ladbrokes know your thoughts.

  1. Giving a personal opinion on a player that is less than fawning is not slating a player.

    It’s a…well an opinion actually.

Even, maybe particularly when he’s a Celtic player.

That concession does not of course apply to Level 5 employees, Ladbrokes staff, SPFL contractors or anyone who was once or even might be in the future employed by any Oldco/Sevco variant or the hertz.

  2. Tom Rogic

It wasn’t just the fresh legs that Rogic brought on last night (RD said he was fresh because he hasn’t had many games).

Rogic did not shirk from the physical challenges and didn’t just opt to pass the ball when he sensed an opponent getting close. Saw a few jambos bounce off him which was magic from rogic.

After Bitton, Rogic will be the next player on the Level 5 EPL Celtic player link.

  3. I was enthralled at Rogic’s performance but I once saw Momo Sylla have a blinder in a pre-season friendly, so let’s wait & see. Rogic is still only 22, if he starts churning out repeat performances akin to last night he will be linked to Man United before Christmas.

  4. James Forrest when fit gives us another option.

Players like JF are few and far between, and teams are willing to persevere to have this option. Re Streling as has been previously mentioned.

I would persevere with JF for now, and consider giving him a roving commission against some teams.

But I agree he is frustrating and perseverance can only last so long.

    HH.

Ps : re fitness. I wonder how many paces he takes to run 20 yards ?

  5. Armstrong’s left peg in evidence last night too.

His squared pass across the 6 yard line was a peach and just like the one he set up for Capn Brown and Sheepsville last season.

  6. As for JF – comment earlier was bullseye. 24 going on 16 and he’s all he is going to be at Celtic.

Oh and you never know what you’re going to get in any game

I was surprised James was played on the right last night. He roasted Paterson in the game at Celtic Park, and I was surprised he wasn’t given the same brief.

That he had a quiet/ineffective match is (IMO) down to his recent recovery spell, and his unexpected call up to the starting 11 30 minutes before the game started.

When he’s fit he’s a cracking player. He seems to be getting less fragile. Fingers crossed.

Would add 10 goals per season to his game if he would only attack the back post when we’re playing down the opposite side of the pitch. That’s what 3 up front is for, no?

  8. a light insanity on

Is JF the player who demonstrates how fickle supporters can be? I remember a few weeks back before he got injured that people were raving about his performances – and it gave me great pleasure to hear that as there are 2halfwits nearby me who don’t know that to support your team does not involve booing a player’s every move – now we have the doubters back on. He needs a run in the team to get confidence and in my eyes has been more effective than GMS this season ( a player I also like). Wingers and inconsistencies – new invention?

  9. Early days I know but not entirely convinced about big Jozo. Looks to have decent pace, can use the ball well & so far no glaring mistakes but at Ajax & again last night he’s looked suspect in the air, & quite weak in one to one situations. Hopefully he just needs time to adapt but for me of the two Boyata looks a far better prospect/defender.

  10. A light Insanity,

While I agree with what you say, how can he get a run in the team with his injurys. Somebody earlier posted ( apologies can’t remember who ) that he has never started four games in a row.

Very difficult then to obtain any consistency. But as previously mentioned he is worth preserving with for nowc.

  11. i just don’t see it with Forrest. I’d measure his performance with assists and goals and they appear minimal to me. He can on occasion give a full back a torrid time but he is not a player that I would rely on or expect to perform when the going gets tough.

    what would you do ?

stick rogic on every game now or keep him as an impact sub. He’s one of the best players (when he is on form) I’ve seen since lubo (I’m not syaing he’s as good as lubo). SO what should ronnie do – he needs as much quality on the pitch as he can get !

That was down to Stuart Armstrong being restored to his left flank, of which he’s had sole ownership of when fit.

On the right JF was double banked Hearts and didn’t fancy it, he’s a motivational wee 5’9 incher, who plays on adrenalin that sometimes doesn’t always flow.

Simple solution for me – play him instead of Kris Commons.

  20. The reply from Ladbrokes to my email.

    Dear Tony,

We’re completely neutral both in our support football and our politics – all we want to do is unequivocally support the Scottish game. Please see below for a statement on which I hope goes some way to reassure you that in no uncertain terms do we wish to alienate the supporters of Celtic or any other club.

I should add that there have been a number of Celtic articles written by our ambassadors since the start of the season covering a range of topics and many of them have been positive.

    Best wishes.

    Alex

Ladbrokes – at the heart of the discussion in Scottish football

As the proud sponsor of the SPFL we’re keen to be a part of the discussion in Scottish football.

As part of that we use ambassadors – football legends and ex-players from a range of clubs – to talk about whatever they believe to be the key talking points in the game. We don’t tell them what to say and we don’t always agree with what they say!

Big stories will divide opinion from time to time, and we know that’s part and parcel of being a fan.

We don’t support any one club above the other and we’re proud to back all clubs in the Scottish football leagues. Investing in Scottish football is something we’ve been delighted to do.

We want our ambassadors to say what they think, and we’ve enjoyed bringing many diverse opinions to our customers so far this season from different clubs, using different ambassadors and giving lots of opinions – good, bad and downright crazy.

We hope, as football fans like us, you’ll continue to enjoy access to unbridled opinions throughout the season.

Forrest is usually crap at Tynecastle. Small pitch size?

Agree he’s better on the left, and I don’t get why Armstrong should have letting rights, let alone sole ownership, of that position. He was poor last night (not as poor as wee Jamesie, mind)

  23. Hunderbirds are Gone on

if James Forrest was to pick a scenario that was least suited to his talents, it would be playing for Celtic in Scotland. His main attribute is his blistering pace, but as we tend to play in a 30 yard strip across the pitch, from our opponents goal, he seldom gets a chance to use it. Apart from the odd game when he really seems to click, his main value to us, is that because the opposition are fearful of his pace, he ties up two players, creating a bit of space elsewhere in the narrow strip we play in. I am a fan though, and think he could be a star for another team, in another league. If we can get some money for him, I think that would be best for both parties.
