League pivots south, not quite Atlantic League

635

Back-to-back away games are statistically more likely to result in points being dropped than any other games (especially if one is a European game), so the probability of Aberdeen dropping points in Inverness last night was high. Their second night-game in the same week, on Friday at Firhill, will also be a genuine challenge.  I can’t find enough occurrences of a team having two away games in the same midweek to draw any statistical inference but I’m glad it’s Aberdeen’s lot, not Celtic’s.

That result felt profound.  Celtic can use the opportunity of a quiet week to prep for the visit of Inverness. A Highland double would go a long way towards the title.

On the “Atlantic League” story, little detail has been reported on what’s happened (ignore what has been reported) and where it’s heading.  The project is not at a mature stage yet, it’s not an Atlantic League, it’s not a collaboration of clubs from small nations, and no lower league clubs, anywhere, have been involved.  Apart from that, the story’s fine.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has kicked the sleeping dog.  We’ll see where he barks.

Time is running out for you to register for the Celtic Park Zip Slide, in aid of the Foundation, which takes place next month.  I did it last year and it was genuinely exhilarating.  Go here and register.

i thought the ‘charlie mulgrew is a midfielder’ argument was discredited before the ‘rangers are the same club’ argument

has the blog went through a timewarp?

Sky once again flying the Sevco flag, raving about the result and hun support. Unlike the Edinburgh Derby where they caught all the highlights, Sky managed to overlook the Killie penalty claim.

  4. If, Celtic defeat Morton in the SC and, the huns defeat Dundee….then are both paired together….will Celtic supporters put another ‘statement’ in the Herald ?

    Discredited how?

Whatever your opinion on him as a player, Mulgrew’s record as a midfielder is by far the more successful compared to his appearances at CB/LB. Strachan played him alongside Brown in Scotland’s 4-2-3-1, where he performed well, earning motm in the home game v Ireland.

Don’t know whether his injury has put an end to future 1st team appearances for Celtic, but taken as a whole, I prefer him to Bitton as Brown’s partner in central midfield.

  6. Good Morning to good Tims everywhere… And everyone else for that matter.

Now my lurking has not been very attentive these days – so imagine this would have already been discussed.

I was talking to a chap 90 + summers old. Has seen a bit of football in his time but never seen a anything like “that” Barca penalty.

Now I may be dreaming but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that done before… It’s vague but I think it was an International.

    Can anyone shed some light.

    Hail Hail

  7. KevJ – re a statement – a friend of mine, a six feet five PN from Beverley Hills used to say during the time he worked for Joan Collins – “there are other windows in this house”, or as another example – when Basil said to Manuel “there is too much butter..on those trays” – just two examples of statements that were never offered to the Herald.

As always, you write an entertaining piece there with your overnight contribution.

However, we have never had a manager who baffle us with a mystical mastery of tactical genius. Our best ever manager never claimed any of those mystical powers and actually said that it was a simpler game than most people imagined.

I am not sure that I could actually discern the difference between a manager who baffled me with bizarre tactics, team selections and substitutions and one who baffled me with mystical genius. Either way, I would just look baffled and bemused and not know whether I was witnessing the work of a genius or an eejit.

Once you retreat into the judgement of the subjective mind, you give yourself wiggle room to reach any pre-judgement you wanted to make anyway.

RD has won a double in his first year and is on course for a double this year. We have had 3 out of 4 disappointing Euro campaigns under his charge so there is objective evidence there.

We set a uniquely high bar if we want a manager whose selections and “tactics” (if we can spot them at all if they are magical and mystical) we never disagree with. You are more likely to see a unicorn before you see one of them. No two Celtic fans agree on who should be in the line up. No two agree on who should be loaned or punted, in or out, and no two agree completely on the specific faults of the manager.

We just mystically know that we don’t like it.

  10. Mulgrew and Commons are way too slow to expect a game for Celtic. Mulgrew always has been. He played 1 good season and that’s it. Commons contributes goals but gives away the ball way too often.

Whether we like it or not these last 2 seasons have been the easiest it’s ever been for celtic.

When a 2 horse race becomes a one horse race how much credit does the jockey deserve.

Start the season at odds of 1 / 40 favs.

Ronnys era cannot be compared to anything that went before

That’s why certain people including myself like to judge him on his European results.

  24. Green man. It is predictable. Don’t forget that the sfa sacked craven for essentially whistleblowing.

Now the interesting thing will be to see if the referees rally behind mr Collum and start a strike?

    What do you think?

    Nah me neither.

Collums cards are obviously marked. I suspect he doesn’t give enough decisions against Celtic and his job sounds a bit to Catholic for Scotlands liking.

I think I might dig out my old sociology and psychology texts and start doing a proper bit of research on my hypothesis that Scotland is an institutionally sectarian country.

That penalty was described in Danny Blanchflower’s (captain of Spurs ans N Ireland) biography. He was considered and intellectual footballer and came up with this cunning ploy because there had been a run of missed penalties . I think this was with the Norn Iron team -way back in the early sixties. He said to be sure to inform the ref of what was about to take place. They did score . Was this the first instance of this tactic being used?
