Lessons in team building from Switzerland and Cyprus

1100

Living so close to England it’s easy for us to get drawn into the ways and processes which prove effective south of the border.  SPL clubs all scout there, more often than not trying to pick up physically robust scraps discarded by the lower leagues, or troubled souls looking for a sixth chance.  Scottish clubs are full of players who have failed to make the grade in England.

When Motherwell were looking for a manager a year ago I heard one of their directors say they hoped to get someone with experience of the English lower leagues, as this has proven to be an effective place for them to network in the past.

Problems with the neighbours works both ways.  It’s too easy for English clubs to use the loose change part of their budget to scoop up anything that looks like promising talent from the SPL.  While most players will earn well in England, few enjoy the career progression they hoped for.

They do things differently elsewhere.  When was the last time teams from Cyprus or Switzerland badgered an English League Two side for their surplus talent?  Developing football teams is difficult but a good top level plan helps.  One of the most encouraging aspects of Celtic’s top level plan is that it meets criteria that match our place in the world.  Recruit talent from the right markets, at the right age and price.  Some money has been spent in England, but not much, and those who have arrived from there look decent value.

If Celtic are to match the recent Champions League achievements of Basel or Apoel Nicosia, players like Izaguirre, Kayal, Wanyama and Ki, who pitch up in Glasgow from what appears to be beyond the horizon of the English, will be crucial.  Just as those players at Basel and Apoel, they arrived here within an affordable budget and appear to have the talent required to compete at the level Celtic aspires to.

11 years ago we bought Chris Sutton from Chelsea against competition from other FA Premier League clubs.  He was soon joined by others at the peak of their ability and reputation, all relatively low-risk signings.  We had a few years in the sun but it was neither affordable nor sustainable.

We’ll know soon enough if the current crop of players trying to establish a reputation for themselves have what it takes to win the league and compete in Europe. Good top level plans can still fail in execution, but I’d rather this strategy than send my cash down the M6.

I recall a few years ago an advertising campaign in Scottish Football that used the strapline:

Let’s kick out the stigma of mental ill-health

I thought the strapline ought to have been:

Let’s kick the stigma out of mental ill-health

That’s about all I would venture to say on the topic. Opinions on full back V wing back are one thing. Opinions on health topics one has little understanding of are at best unhelpful.

It’s 33 years since I left Glasgow, but the city is always close to my heart.

One of the great joys I have felt, was, at various times over the years, introducing my children to the city.

I find that whenever you are introducing someone to a place, you see that place in a fresh light, as if through their eyes.

I always enjoy returning to Glasgow, especially when it coincides with a Celtic victory!

Looked back at earlier posts and saw that that Rangers supporter seemed at a loss to explain why O`Connor was not banned and Aluko was. I would have thought the answer was very simple: A mistake was made in not banning O`Connor and a mistake was not made in banning Aluko. We all know that honest mistakes happen.

I think on the subject of mental illness Kojo has no idea and while people with this illness are encouraged to seek medical help many choose not to because of the stigma attached to the illness.I think with people posting nonsense on the subject as Kojo has done could mean somone who reads his post and needs treatment thinks its ok not to seek treatment poor show Kojo you do yourself a diservice by posting about an issue you obviously no nothing about.H.H.

    TBB,

What about paranoia, according to some we should all be experts :oD

  8. Once again the Swiss have proved that you underestimate the quality of their teams at your peril. An inflated opinion of their ability and big money arrogance proved the downfall of both Manchester teams.

Just like England’s international sides , they think they can beat everyone, of course the reality is totally different when they go in against the big teams in World and European finals.

It’s a source of great encouragement to see the Cypriots and Basel and also teams like Porto perform so well on the big stage. Looks like Ajax were robbed having two what appeared legitimate goals chalked off last night against Real Madrid. Interesting to see if the investigation will come to anything.

  9. Great to see the Aluko ban upheld, I fully expected a whitewash as usual, Fat Sally is obviously sweating judging by his inappropriate comments on the verdict. I hope Hibs pump them.

    From the BBC:

The Rangers boss said he was unhappy with former referee Jim McCluskey, who chaired the three-man panel that heard the tribunal.

“The meeting was chaired by a former referee and I have to say his decision making hasn’t improved any since he stopped refereeing,” said McCoist.

“The three gentlemen on the panel have effectively called my player a cheat and a liar, neither of which he is.”

That is an incredible blast from McCoist.

I’ll be staggered if he isn’t called up to explain himself.

Why is the former referee named in the article?

    ——————————

The point about anonymity is to stop claims of bias. By naming the referee McCoist is breaching this principle and should be brought to account.

  21. Reading through the sports supplements of the various Sunday newspapers one interesting stat catches my attention. I’m quite surprised to see that Rangers pull in a massive 47,000 spectators to their home games every week. Phenomenal attendances in the current financial climate.

  23. Paddy Gallagher at 09.44 on the last thread gives a link to a photograph of Aluko said by the Record to have been published in the Mail and also said to be relied upon by the fat comedian in support of his player. A look at the Mail’s website shows a different picture entirely with much less of the Dunfermline player’s hand showing (albeit at the end of a similarly telescopic arm). Was the picture in Paddy’s link published anywhere? Is it a complete fake? Anyone any idea? Why is it only on the day of the hearing, two days after the player is cited, that the picture emerges and is referred to by the fat comedian?
