Levein: textbook symptoms of stress in the workplace, bank borrowing

276

I’ve stayed away from the nonsense Craig Levein has spouted about Scott Brown this Hearts 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park. Yes, Hearts disciplinary record is vastly worse than Celtic’s, and Levein’s on-pitch assaults are memorable decades after the event, but we all know Craig isn’t the sharpest tool in the box, so why worry, I thought.

Now the Hearts manager suggests Scott Brown deliberately got himself booked, while Celtic were a goal down to Kilmarnock, in order to incur a suspension before we face Newco: “I think if you look and see if Scott didn’t get booked against Kilmarnock last week and he got booked against St Johnstone then he would have missed the Rangers game. I’ll leave you to deduce what that means.”

Craig, I’m loathed to pop-psych a diagnosis on you, but you are sounding like a man with a tenuous grip on reality. Say what you like about a tackle, we are all entitled to an alternative view, but seeing conspiracies behind such mundane events suggests he is not coping with the stress of football management.

Stress is a killer.  If you suffer, seek help before things get to this stage.

Bank borrowing

The last football club in the country without bank borrowing has managed to secure an “overdraft”.  Details are sparse (it is Newco, after all), but we know the facility of around £3m is secured on at least Albion car park and Edmiston House.  I expect whatever they put in place now will be enough to see them through to season ticket renewal time, alleviating any immediate cash crisis.

There are many more assets available for security, specifically the stadium and IP (if they are so far unencumbered).  This show could run for a while, but you know the final act.

“Great news!  We no longer need to look after as many deeds as we did yesterday.”  I’d call that a favourable settlement, wouldn’t you?

Walk on Fire, with the Celtic Foundation

It’s not often you get the chance to walk on hot coals but that’s the experience you can have with the Celtic Foundation on 23rd of this month.  I know I bang on about the Foundation and the great work they do, but you should not underestimate the sheer human experience of getting involved with these projects.

People have sky-dived, climbed mountains, zip-wired from the top of stands and this month will walk on hot coals!!  When you look back on your year/your life, you will recount these occasions.

figures like you suggest though I think they were suggesting we had a lot less.

E-Tims is the place for you this morning. And FWIW,I agree with them, and with you.

We obviously don’t want to spend the money because-and I’m cutting the board some slack that I doubt they deserve-we can’t find the right players to fit our profile, get us that fabled bang for our buck.

Well,I seem to recall a previous strategy of parsimony because we were told it was all we could afford. Wi PL getting rid of any and every decent player-inc Broonie,if Neil Lennon hadn’t thrown a fit!-and replacing them wi utter dross.

So we didnae turn up to watch a heap of ordure on the pitch. PL replaced stars with second-raters,and fans with banners.

It took losing to the huns to turn that strategy around. Got in a top manager,he spent a few quid, and…

WON US AN INVINCIBLE TREBLE AS THE FANS TURNED UP IN DROVES!!!!

And we are rewarded by having a board who can’t see past their already-failed policy of austerity. They wouldn’t spend it then in case, erm,I dunno, and they won’t spend it now in case, erm,I dunno.

And when they get called out for it,the messenger is burned at the stake for heresy. Bliddy sick of it.

  5. I saw somebody on FB saying Celtic should blow all the banked money on players, all I can say is thank God he doesn’t run the Club.

So what could we buy with £31m? 2/3 of Aymeric Laporte for starters. Approx 4 Morelos’s ;-)

Money in the bank will mean hee haw if we fail to qualify for the CL. Yes I do know better players might guarantee that but that is just a maybe.

  6. I see Jackie McNamara is being touted for new SFA job today in some quarters

Now that would set the huns afire with all sorts of boychots ,banners & statements marches petitions etc

I do hope jackie gets the job :)

Will Jackie be on his standard 5% bonus for raising a player’s transfer value?

  8. Can anyone tell me how much Celtic will expect to earn in turnover terms annualy from the proposed Hotel Museum and Superstore, think the cost is 18miliion to build them, recent merchandise was 10m so do they expect this new facility to generate more merchandise income?

This potential Scotland position could literally be a life saver for Jackie McNamara.

As you are aware he wasn’t universally popular when he was York City manager. Even as Chief Executive he hasn’t escaped the wrath of fans.

Very dodgy situation for any Scotsman in York, where it is still perfectly legal to be used as target practice for any bampot with a bow and arrow. Except Sunday of course where such acts are deemed as very unsporting

Do we really need a 60,000 stadium, couldnt we just hire out a big boardroom and all the accountants on here could just go in and look at the most beautiful set of interim accounts.

Celtic have missed a trick here, i dont see any information about getting your picture taken with the accounts, its only that old silver cup, European cup i think its called.

My question was a genuine question about the strategy of spending money on a Hotel when I feel the priority should be the team and facilities for supporters, maybe the board have crunched the numbers and this will be a good earner which hopefully will find its way to the team rather than another strand of the plc.

So the man with no name pulls out of the running for the job despite being confirmed as being considered only two days. And despite the championing by Chris McLaughin of BBC Scotland. A shameless hussy if ever there was one.

Your question is perfectly valid, mate. Similar,as I said,to the points raised on E-Tims.

Are Celtic committed to putting the best team possible on the pitch? Or are they a money-raising enterprise?

Are they scared to spend,or just ideologically opposed to it?

I remember Alex Ferguson getting hard questions from the press for spending a ridiculous £7m on Andy Cole. His reply?

We’d only have to pay it in tax. Use it or lose it.

    So…

Here’s a question for all our happyclapping fans of the glorious balance sheet.

How much money has the company lost to Hector due to a failure to invest earnings in improving the playing staff, and BACKING our manager-and our fans, btw.

I wasnt aiming that at you in the slightest, its about time they looked at other revenue streams and making the supporter experience better.

i think the “celtic fans” on the board are akin to those growing beards in an attempt to be a hipster, they think its cool to be a fan whilst not understanding the actual concept of being a football supporter.

    ———————————————————————————————————

The plc will spend just enough money on the team to ensure that we comfortably remain the number one team domestically which then gives us a crack at qualifying for the CL group stage. I suspect that is the full extent of our ambition no matter what they tell supporters.

It is therefore feasible that (assuming we reach the CL groups), we could amass a healthy profit every season as we don’t have to spend that much (relative to the domestic competition) to win the SPFL title. If we don’t qualify for the CL group stages then the club will sell one of its assets to compensate for the loss of this income stream.

There is no doubt the hotel and museum project is all about generating further incoming for the plc and its shareholders. I am not criticising them for doing that as that’s what plc’s are supposed to do.

As a shareholder, I am quite happy to receive my extra shares each season on the back of healthy profits. That’s probably the only thing I have in common with the club’s major shareholder.
