Little sweat on the plastic, Rogic, Hamilton put others to shame

99

Saturday’s win over Hamilton Accies was a classic of the pre-European genre.  Batter into an early lead, then stroll around making sure you leave with the points with very little sweat on the plastic surface.

I know we want to see Celtic win these games comfortably, but we have learned the tempo of the team beats up and down.  Leaving Lanarkshire with the 100% record intact and no further injuries is a satisfying weekend’s work.

Tom Rogic’s functionary return to action for the first time this season was a welcome sight.  From memory, it takes Tom a while after injury to return to full sharpness, so performance expectations should be low for a few weeks.

Hamilton start each season as everyone’s favourite for relegation.  They have precious few fans or resources, but their ability to scout and develop young talent puts others to shame.  This season they will be comforted by the existence of Hearts in the league.  At the same stage last year, it was Craig Levein’s side who were top of the table with a 100% record.

I have no beef with Levein, who appears to be an equal opportunity moaner, but he is no Robbie Neilson.  The Hearts director, Craig Levein, should have a word with the Hearts manager, Craig Levein.

  1. Boli & Julien were available to Neil Lennon for the Cluj game. He made an error. The decision to play McGregor from the start was tactical.

We face different issues every year but people want to complain about the same things. No logic applied. Rinse and repeat the same old drivel.

The Daily Record, The Sun & Clyde have broken a few brains.

We had the quality available to beat Cluj. The manager picked the wrong team, failed to manage the game and some individual error killed us off.

If Lawwell leaves he will be replaced by another suit with a huge paycheck. This is modern football. It’s distasteful but its not something we can opt out of.

  2. The problem with European football is the disparity between CL and EL football, and the 4-3

defeat to Cluj shouldn’t mean poor Celtic, or rich Celtic, I believe Peter Lawwell and his UEFA chums are looking at it, constantly.

Celtic getting thrashed by Barcelona isn’t everybody’s bag, and much better are three excellent ties for £72 against more evenly matched sides, the EL should be financially upgraded, no more whaling and gnashing of teeth when we miss out on our sporadic, CL doings.

I’d like to know who the guy is, waiting on the wings to run the show better than Celtic, where annual turnover topped six figures for the first time in our history, this guy that takes Celtic through to the CL every year to top up treble trebles.

There’s nobody stealing our money or undermining your season ticket, get a life, and suck up odd goal defeats against champions of elsewhere, don’t remember the Seville year with everyone on a downe?.This place will come to life critiquing our performance in Rennes, before it happens, your can hear the cynics sharpening the keyboards coz its no the wee diddy league, where the sense of entitlement, becomes nauseous.

Thanks for posting. I’m so glad you won the appeal and the award was back dated. It’s also great that you were able to use SFTB style of posting to assist you. I see some posters have given you some (hopefully) helpful information for your friend. This is a brilliant site full of great posters as you already mentioned in your post above.

You have to wonder where have all the *Lawellout* posters gone? After Cluge they dominated the board, swamped for days on end with , sack him, pay him off, sell him on, then as results got better they silently sloped off one by one, hibernation maybe, not to be seen until we get gubbed again. Point being, IMO, it’s almost certainly the same ‘ people ‘ who wanted BR out (before his infamous exit) that are now hoping we boot PL out, i.e. Sevconians.

    What a load of rubbish.

Lawwell has cost us 30 million with not having the required players in time for our biggest matches of the season.

His non co-operation over RES12 is a disgrace

Normally agree with you but can’t on this occasion. Failure to reach the CL group stages has consequences unfortunately: the loss of £30m which can help us to buy better quality players; the danger of having to sell one of our better players to offset some of that loss; and the delay in pursuing signing targets until the final days of the transfer window until EL qualification is confirmed.

I don’t want Lawell to go. I recognise his qualities and the great work he does for the club in bringing in much needed finance and keeping our profile high in Europe. I do believe, however, that his remit needs redefined and that he has too much power. I would like to see a Director of Football who knows at the start of the season what his transfer budget will be. Lawell’s other influence over player matters should be in tandem with the DoF to discuss policy about the retention and sale of players.

I do agree with you that 7-0 drubbings in CL shouldn’t happen. Defeats of this magnitude are avoidable and are normally down to how the manager sets up his team. BR had an unrealistic philosophy when it came to Europe. I don’t think those horror shows against PSG and Barca should frighten us off from trying to qualify for the CL. If you are in the CL it helps to attract players. Failure to qualify can upset your current stars who harbour ambitions to play in the CL and consequently cause them to seek a move elsewhere.

I do agree that the EL group looks exciting and I look forward to them. I also realistically realise that Rennes are at the top of the French League and Lazio are an Italian club. However, I think we have players who can give it a good go. I constantly worry, though, that our manager will have an ‘off night’.

You’re shooting the wrong guy. I took issue with that post as well. It came from RockTreeBhoy. I replied to it in the last blog. While I was posting, Paul opened the new blog. I copied and pasted my post onto this blog and it showed my name at the top. As I say, it came from Rock Tree Bhoy and I thought it was a rubbish post too. :-))

I’ve read a fair bit of rubbish on here since 2006 when I first joined but your post takes the biscuit.

I’m not a hun or one of the peepil though….but it seems that if you dare to criticise anything or anyone connected with Celtic on here you are called out as one….

Now that must be a contender when you consider the high volume of hard core flak aimed at Celtic on here week after week,

If you’re happy at Celtic failing to make the CL by losing to AEK, who then failed to win a point, or worse still, losing to Cluj who themselves failed to make the CL you just keep on happy clapping like a seal…

    ___________________________________________

Now come on, suggesting that there are Celtic fans who are happy to see us knocked out of the CL – and then encouraging them to keep on clapping – incitement to unsupport…another contender surely

Point being, you are content for posters to come on here and vilify Celtic’s Chief Executive whenever they feel like it but then take umbrage when someone comes on to defend him, not fair,

OK, I also suggested there was Sevconians coming on here pretending to be hurting Celtic fans after the Cluge disaster, and I still think that was the case….

….but I don’t think any of the guys I’ve mentioned above are not Celtic supporters.

  10. Unfortunately the loss to Cluzj was down to Lenny, Brown & Bain. Yes if we had our buys in earlier we may have done better but there are no guarantees. To say Lawwell cost us a Champions League place is too simplistic. We had the players to beat Cluj, we also had Boli & Julien but we didn’t play them.

Obviously I wanted us to qualify and wanted to get the money but now I’m looking forward to Europa Group games with a lot more relish than the Champions League Group, with Barca er al.

  11. NorrieM

That could be good news and sort his knee properly. He had a bad knee injury early in his Celtic career but not sure if this is the same knee. Best tackler we have so need to get him right

  12. THE_HUDDLE on 16TH SEPTEMBER 2019 5:49 PM

It’s not really £30mill for getting to the CL group stages

It’s more when you add prize money and gate money

  13. That’s assuming we get any points in the group stages, the CL is geared very much towards those that are successful. And we also get money for entering the Europa and gate money.

    Champions League money:

Base fee for group stage: €15,250,000

    Group match victory: €2,700,000

    Group match draw: €900,000

    Europa League money

Base fee for group stage: €2,920,000

    Group match victory: €570,000

    Group match draw: €190,000

    Group winners: €1,000,000

    Group runners-up: €500,000

  14. The Huddle- thanks for your reply, I thought money got bumped up last year,to about £26 m for group stage HH

The defeat against Cluj was sickening, but wasn’t down to ‘the board’ IMO

I hated the window from Turnbull to Taylor, it went on too long but we eventually signed 12 players? – completely unprecedented and so much for the pis*y “downsizing” nausea, that we suffered here, and elsewhere all summer.

Celtic, instead I prefer to credit for beating the Swedish champions 6-1 on aggregate rather than losing in a flukey performance 4-3 against the Romanian champions, whom ironically we’ll despatch in the EL, because we’re more settled and the signings will surely play.

With regard to Cluj the job was done with a draw and an away goal in Romania but inexplicably NFL decided not to use the players that were signed in good time to breach the gap to the CL?

We’ll never know what the score would have been had they played and MacGregor deployed in his own position.

It’s a gamble a very, very expensive gamble along an arduous route that demeans the EL which IMO is where we are, and will remain for some time, would we have been ready to knock out Prague?

The CL might be a bridge too far for Celtic, until SKY, UEFA, are stopped from elitist manipulation of rich man, poor man where there will always be 4-3 off nights.

    ……………………………..

Don’t get me wrong, I’m jubilant that we signed so many good players. I’m optimistic also that they’ll all do well for us. I’m particularly impressed by the signing of the younger players for the future, Frimpong, O’Connor, Connell and the young lad from Southampton who plays for ROI but whose name I can never remember.

I disagree that the players were signed in good time. They should have been signed at the start of the window. I lost count of the number of times Neil said, ‘We’re hoping to bring in 2 or 3 players in the next couple of days” only for it not to happen. Near the end it seemed that we would be lucky to get any players in at all. I still think we should be aiming to be a CL team and prepare properly each season before the qualifiers begin. My position is that Lawell got the players in this season, but late. Last season he failed us miserably and his influence needs to be curtailed. We should not have lost to AEK nor Cluj. I think there will be some cracking games in the EL and I’m looking forward to all of them with anticipation but as a fan base we should always be demanding the best and the custodians of our club should always be aware that they cannot Ct with impunity.

  21. Just watched highlights of our game V Hamilton, a few minutes of Villa V West Ham and a few minutes of St Pauli V Hamburg.

It is truly astonishing the speed at which the modern game is played.

Something, perhaps, critics should consider before passing judgement on a player.
