Managerial talent

1363

Derek Adams propensity to waste time and then complain about time being added on should not obscure the fact that he is a remarkably productive football manager.  Ross County, from Dingwall, population 5,000, are sitting fourth in the SPL and remain in touching distance of a place in Europe.  No need to highlight their Scottish Cup campaign in 2010.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Aberdeen have asked Ross County for permission to speak to him.  On the face of it, Aberdeen should fancy their chances of recruiting Adams but County are confident for a reason.  SPL, and in Owen Coyle’s case First Division, managers have been recruited by well-paying English clubs at levels the likes of Aberdeen cannot compete with.  County chairman, Roy McGregor, is likely to advise Adams to hold off for a more lucrative move south.

When Jimmy Calderwood left Dunfermline for Aberdeen in 2004 chairmen John Yorkston explained his surprise at Calderwood heading north, explaining that he believed one day Calderwood would move to Ibrox.  Aberdeen proved to be a plateau for Calderwood, as it has been for most over the last couple of decades.

If they don’t get Adams chances are they will go back to Motherwell; back-to-back second place finishes are exactly what is needed at Pittodrie right now.

Best of luck to Gordon Strachan on his first competitive game as Scotland manager tonight.

  1. He also said celebrate it the same as the others, when I went to school 1 was the first, maybe my teachers were rubbish

  2. Don’t know if it’s already been discussed, but the Herald comic is publishing their “50 Greatest Scottish Footballers” chosen by their, erm, “sportswriters”.

Today, we have the Top 6 to 10 (maybe the Top 1 to 5 ramorra?).

Ever since fitba kicked off, fans and commentators have drawn up lists and it’s all part of the banter: all about opinions, but in this case it might be about agendas.

In this select band there are 3 Rangers players, 1 Hibee, and 1 Celt.

Ok, I’m assuming that the Top 1 to 5 are al Celts, but I just cannot comprehend how Billy McNeil can be classed (10th) behind Ham n Egg (8th)!!!

The imperious McNeil classed lower than the SFA protected and promoted thug aka Captain Blood – whit???

Maybe I just have green tinted gregory pecks, and maybe in my youth I admit to chanting “JG, JG, …” anytime a stray dog wandered onto the field of play (it seemed the perfectly natural thing to do, although maybe I did the various dugs a disservice) BUT how in the name of the wee man did Ham n Egg ever make this or any other Top 50 ???

Of course, silly me, keep the Servo interested enough tae buy the chipwrappers…

    (Herald agenda).

  3. Snake Plissken on

McGregor, Hutton, Caldwell, Hanley, Mulgrew, Burke, Dorrans, McArthur, Snodgrass, Maloney and Fletcher.

  4. DL = total arse !!!!! This TFG sand dancer scenario is a non story ! Radio Clyde and Real Radio have been noising up punters for years great laugh eh ! Sevco DL n co get some meds n it’s a National Disgrace ! Who is this do called person !! Av got a good solution ! Don’t engage in the conversationand don’t talk to strangers ! Knew that one since 3 years of age ! Incidentally Sand dancer = Incredibly greedy not to clever footballer !

  5. The larger issue at stake here Paul is, why is it Caley and Ross County are punching above their weight? Perhaps the inability of the likes of Hibs, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd and even Hearts to find the quality of football that they once displayed has something to do with this. Then there is Motherwell! They always seem to be up at the top of the league. Maybe the “steely” approach of the Northern teams is like theirs. Me personally, I can´t say I´ve ever enjoyed watching Motherwell play!!

The success of the Northern teams obliges Celtic to look for answers beyond the Glasgow goldfish bowl. To Perth perchance, where the other Saints are doing better than those from the cities of Dundee and Aberdeen and Edinburgh and the towns of Paisley and Kilmarnock. Could it be that grassroots football is still alive in Scotland? Perhaps up north, where other sporting activities were played in the past , shinty, shooting and the like, the game is seen as a novelty and is growing.

For me tonight´s game has less of a value than the last international at Pittodrie. That was Strachan´s debut, at where he made it as a player and and being up North too, it was maybe a wink to the young Northern lads to feel part of the new Scotland set up.

He got through that test. Tonight with all the huffing and hyping and puffing about Gareth Bale from the scottish mediaset, you would almost want Wales to win!!!!

By the way, I don´t know how you keep on writing so many great articles, always so informing!

Keeping the faith and standing up for the Scottish Champions!!!

  6. If one is DUPED ! does that make the individual on the receiving end labelled a DUPER DUPIST OR DUPENDER ! This TFG has to be outed ! He will have the answer ! Ps Who is this Tommy Fae Glasgow who is this person ! Where’s Sparticus when you need him !!!

There will be, at most 2 Celts and, at least, One Ranger in the Herald Top 5 tomorrow. They have not selected Jinky & King Kenny yet in positions 6 to 50 but have already placed Lambert (47), Simpson (46), McStay (42), Auld (36), Gemmell(33), Lennox(20), McGrory(18), McGrain (15), Murdoch (12), and McNeil (10). Stanton & Crerand are there too but not for exploits at Celtic.

Rangers supply RS McColl (50), BFDJ (49), Cooper (48), McCoist (41), Caldow (40), Goram (37), Henderson (31), Gough (28), Young (25), Jardine (19), Alan Morton (16), Willie Waddell (14), Willie Woodburn (9), Greig(8), and Souness (6) with Baxter to come in the top 5.

In my view, our post war generation of Scottish footballers that played in the early 60s to the mid 70s were our golden generation. Gemmell, Lennox and Murdoch are seriously underestimated in that list with Simpson and McNeill placed too high.

In their list Cooper and Henderson are underestimated but all the rest are placed too high with Waddell, Woodburn, Jardine and Gough being the most seriously over rated.

The European Cup-lifting captain of the finest side ever produced on Scottish soil rates at 10th on their all-time list, behind Rangers’ one-dimensional stoical hired thug…

    – truly, truly embarrassing for those purported ‘sports journalists’. A damning indictment of the accusations thrown their way over the past year reporting their favourite zombie swarm. Cringeworthy.
