Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

If you missed it, today’s earlier article on Lady Luck, HMRC and money is here.

Join the Celtic Graves Society, Fergus McCann and many more at Kilsyth Cemetery on Saturday, 18 August, to commemorate the final resting place of the great Jimmy Quinn. Full details below or at Celtic Graves.

I’m sorry if my reference to an earlier joking remark offended you. I meant no malice.

I appreciate that you feel for our club as much as I do, but I don’t agree that the board are anti Celtic in the way you continually state.

You are no shrinking violet when you dismiss alternative views to your own, and on the night of the 4-1 defeat in Warsaw, you actually blamed posters on here for the defeat.

I completely agree with you that the 2 performances versus Legia were unacceptable and that Ronny may be out of his depth. The moneyball policy, as we operate it, has left our team weaker. Wanyama was a fluke which has hidden the flawed thinking. However, we cannot compete with the top teams. Recognising this isn’t defeatest; it’s realistic. Look where moonbeam thinking took der hun.

There is a story to come out re the 5way agreement but to allege that PL is one of its architects is premature at least. I don’t believe he is chasing the bigot pound.

Hey, we could cop for £17m if we get past Maribor, equivalent to 42000 season tickets at £400. The hun is worth nothing like that to us. Even the group stage of the EL is worth at least £5m.

It is vital that some investment is made in the team. Let’s see who is brought in.

I say we stick with Ronny for a season and let him try to implement his ideas. We will not win the league unless we improve dramatically, and soon.

Being a Celtic fan is never easy but to say we should “starve them out” is definitely not the Celtic way.

Gies piece, was ineligible, end off.

    =========================

Then why do UEFA have a rule that defines the punishment for suspension which is separate from ineligible. It’s a very clear distinction.

    Article 21 – Forfeit

1 If a match cannot take place or cannot be played in full, the member association or club responsible forfeits the match.

2 A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.

3 A match may be declared forfeit if a player who is ineligible under the regulations of the competition concerned participates in the match, as long as the opposing team files a protest.

The man actually said before the Maribor game and not everybody who posts about players and has a different view from you is making excuses for the board, so why don’t you give it a rest.

Or is your 15 minted of fame over too quickly?

  5. Legia – hard luck? For their fans, yes

    For the club itself? No.

Dundee United stood tall in the no to newco debate and have had to face them twice since.

We may have to play them too but that doesn’t mean we are chasing the bigot pound.

    If so, hope they play.

  11. The question is, do we want players who look good against other SPFL teams or those who look good against us (as of last season) ?

I’d take many of the Legia team before any of the other SPFL players.

    Absolutely correct.

For god’s sake play Johansen in the middle of the park and let him be the play maker not Mulgrew. Play Griffiths up front and Commons in behind him and play James Forrest out right as he appears to be fit ( or should be ) and has experience at this level.

    The back five pick themselves.

Charlie left mid and in the absence of Brown go with Biton.

  13. The Legia fans have been let down badly by gross incompetence by the club. However there is no injustice here, unlike the Rapid Vienna fiasco.

In the unlikely event that their appeal is upheld, then it would be an injustice.

At least the manager now knows we need strengthening after two poor performances, yet has progressed to guarantee European football in whichever tournament.

I always think any new player coming into a team at short notice is a gamble, less so if they’re a proven goalscorer, but after the crap we’ve watched the past two weeks it’s more of a gamble to go with what we have. Maribor must be favourites, which is in our favour and the last game really is at ‘home’.

We have been dealt a get out of jail free card and had better be careful how we play it.

Losing to Maribor would not be the end of the world if we play well, but I’m afraid that if we perform like we did v Legia and get similarly humped, no amount of happy clapping will prevent heads rolling.

For that reason alone, if it were me I’d be breaking the strategy and sign some experience with no resale value in the interests of self preservation and Celtic?

We have the wherewithal to do so. The question is will we? What will be seen as in Celtic’s best interests?

    Any idea?

PS will Brownie be back by then?

I’m no sold on johansen yet, I’ve seen a fair bit and he is too inconsistent.

sipsini, me too. Not done a stoke today. Was up and out the door this morning at 05.00 to head to the bottling plant in Renfrew to pick up 292 bottles of the good stuff. I came back home and fired up BBC news just in time to see the story of our reinstatement land.
