Maribor slight favourites

2143

Celtic will face Maribor from Slovenia in the Champions League play-off round.  Maribor, of course, played a critical part in the death of Rangers, when they eliminated Ally MsCoist’s team from Europe a few months after Craig Whyte took over from Sir David Murray.  Having heard the 6-1 aggregate result against Legia, they are already celebrating the draw.

Maribor gave Wigan two hard games in last season’s Europa League, winning their home tie and causing the FA Cup holders more trouble than expected in England.  They progressed to the knock out round before going out 4-3 on aggregate to Sevilla – a feat Celtic would not have been capable of. Right now, they should be slight favourites.

Legia are oot………….you will just have to get over it. Watch some reruns of Rapid Vienna cheating us oot of Europe if you must. It will assuage your guilt.

Celtic would have been going to Kazakhstan again had we been in Europa.

    More good news.

  3. Been injured for a few weeks now and have been going out on a Friday evening to watch my friends’ Old Timers league team which is mainly Brits (Eng) and my Scottish pals’ Polish team.

They play each other tonight so killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

After midweek I was wondering whether or not to wear the hoops as I know both sets of lads would give me pelters.

Now it is all ready and shall be out there for all to see.

    Should be an interesting evening.

The manager said in an interview last week that he was trying to get players in and I guess with the news today he will continue with his plan to get players in, wether they will play any part in Maribor is another question, only Maradonna would have made a difference to Celtic’s performance on Wednesday..

Madonna would have made a difference on Wed…

  5. Reinstatement is PL’s worst nightmare.

Elimination bought him another 8 months before he had to spend any serious cash.

Now we know the current team is seriously flawed, witness the Legia games.

He must speculate to accumulate. If he doesn’t and we tumble out at the hands of Maribor then his position moves from the label of ‘difficult’ to ‘untenable’. The criticism from all sources including the most reasonable of supporters and ex-players has resulted in that.

Of course, another who will be sweating at the prospect of another qualifier is RD. Another abject failure may be too much for him to withstand…

We have been dealt a get out of jail free card and had better be careful how we play it.

Losing to Maribor would not be the end of the world if we play well, but I’m afraid that if we perform like we did v Legia and get similarly humped, no amount of happy clapping will prevent heads rolling.

For that reason alone, if it were me I’d be breaking the strategy and sign some experience with no resale value in the interests of self preservation and Celtic?

We have the wherewithal to do so. The question is will we? What will be seen as in Celtic’s best interests?

    Any idea?

PS will Brownie be back by then?

I was at the rapid games, I was in the traditional celtic end that night, feel as tho it was yesterday, and I’ve never gotten over it.

Mibbie your right. We might just deserve one to go our way.

@macbloscaidh: The real question is why have Legia Warsaw FC been punished when it was the company who owned & operated the club who were at fault? #unfair

Even Hoydonk wants Cifri at Celtic. And surely we cant be out bid by Rotherham for May???

  12. Would doing the Poznan in the Champions League be rubbing too much salt into the Legia wounds?

I am genuinely very sorry for Legia and wish to convey my sympathies but football is about the whole club – the management as well as the playing staff and one part of the Legia club let them down very badly.

I do hope that Celtic and Legia develop a future friendship.

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

See we’ve been linked with C McManaman, not too sure the manager will have known much about him, who does indeed pick the players. Dont think our scouting reports will have any “seasoned” pros on the list, doesnt fit with the strategy. Pity as thats what we need right now

  14. Gene's a Bhoy's name on

Well done to uefa for upholding the rules -sfa take note

Feel pleased and embarassed in equal measure -think maribor are clear favourites unless we can turn things round in dramatic fashion -a fit James Forest will help

  15. Legia appeal will fail.

Legia didnt just slip up on Wednesday. They deliberately didn’t include the player in the squad for both games against St Pats. They screwed up for the last month.

Interesting quote from the gutted Legia source.

“It’s unfair – we’ve been working towards this point for eight years. ”

8 years to get to the CL 4th round qualifier.

Please, will the new owner of FF’s lucky yellow shirt return it to him before August 15? Don’t want the Barney costume to be brought out from hiding.

Hope some mind doctors are working now with EI. Those tears of despair were very painful to look at when he was the last player to leave the field on Wednesday.

    Celtic forever.

  20. New high impact players before Maribor are unlikely.

Bigger issue is to get the ones we have actually playing as a team with passion and a workable game plan.

    HH

  21. I don’t see how we can get in any meaningful signings before the Maribor game. I don’t think our performance against Legia will have encouraged anyone to sign up.

The same players will need to reorganise and dig themselves out of this – Christ Almighty how we miss Scott Brown. He isn’t the best player but he sets a floor that no-one is allowed to perform below. Sometimes he creates little but we are never over-run with him in the team.

I’m not too confident. We might win, but we might get the same again.

  22. Ronny Deila speaking to media at Lennoxtown on today’s #UCL draw: “It’s very strange, have to say that. Feel very sorry for Legia.” (MH)

Is it so difficult to get the facts right? The official Celtic site says Legia fielded an ineligible player.

    No.

They fielded a SUSPENDED player as Paul quite rightly point out.

Surely being suspended automatically made him ineligible.

    ==========================================

Yes suspension would also make him ineligible but suspension is given a separate rule. Ineligible (other than suspension) would be for things like clearance not granted after a transfer in time, played for a different club in the same competition in previous rounds (i.e. cup-tied).

  24. Go tell the Spartim on

C McManaman, former England Under 21 winger, plays for Wigan, most recently famous for some atrocious tackling, so much so Honduras checked out his eligibility, yes it was that bad

  25. The best signing we could make is NL for a one-off consultancy to get us through this tie (or at least to not let us get totally pumped).

  26. Anybody wanting to kill a few minutes and several brain cells, here are the official UEFA regulations regarding Champions League – eligibility, signings, venues, coefficients etc.
