McCoist quite right to hold firm line

980

In terms of pure logic, Ally McCoist was quite right to insist, “I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the club shares this view.”

It is outrageous to put Sevco in the position of accepting Rangers are stripped of previous league titles while due process has not been carried out.  The very fact that the SFA and SPL are negotiating with Sevco over this matter is reason enough for McCoist to issue a firm rebuttal.  Quite simply, if the authorities are prepared to negotiate, their offer should be rejected until the last moment possible, at which point they will be meekly accepted.

The SFA and SPL must allow due process to take place and remove any need for Sevco to rubber-stamp a judgement on Rangers.  It is wholly inappropriate to discuss or agree the consequences of a guilty verdict, or subsequent punishments (losing titles won illegally is not a punishment), until a verdict is recorded.

Due process, please, nothing more and nothing less.  If Rangers didn’t illegally register players for over a decade neither they nor Sevco have anything to worry about.

  1. Traynor article is utterly astonishing. Now suggesting that the SFL should be considered Scotland’s top league…? On the basis of… what , exactly?

And I see Brian Kennedy is exhumed again, now prepared to bid 100k more than Green paid for RFC’s assets.

When the dust settles on this fiasco, it will be clear that the sheer incompetence and willful blindness of the MSM towards their club was one of the main contributatory factors to their demise.

Truly, a new low in Scottish journalism.

I still say teh Ajax game was a good run-out for the bhoys.

Yes we got roundly played off the park. But lets face it, if your going to be given a lesson in pass and move then it may as well be during pre-season

We constantly play against teams content to let us have the ball or that want it up the park as quickly as possible.

Compared to them we are possession teams.

Compared to Ajax, or for that matter the majority of the Dutch league, we’re a route 1 team without a big guy upfront.

A game like that helps show the team they cant always expect to have the ball, especially not on the continent, its out of their comfort zone.

Not only that, but what I hope we take the most from is that Ajax passed to players already on the move. Being on the move when you receive the ball and being able to use simply your first touch (which despite it being pre-season is clear we have to work on) to take it past a man or to give yourself that gap can be invaluable.

Never more so- as I’m sure you all agree- than in the last 3rd of the pitch. If theres a time of year to take a hiding, its to a better team in a foreign country, during pre-season.

    Win, lose or draw?

What the hell do we care?

When wee clubs like Spartans are thrown of the Cup for having a name wromg on a teamsheet or whatever it was, then cheating on an industrial scale should merit something appropriate.

My original point was really that the SFA wants to appear to have punished them in order to avoid a call for SFA heads, while in reality come to a deal with them for suitable sanctions that the transferring entity can accept.

Aplogies for my sleepier response earlier. I had just completed a 5 hour drive home, after being on beach hols with my four grandchildren for a week. Now of course, sleep evades me.

  8. I am struggling to see what portent to draw from our Ajax defeat.

The last time we got a 4:0 humping from a big team’s reserve line up, was from Man U. We then went on to beat their first team on aggregate in two CL group stages.

Does this mean we are destined to beat Ajax in any CL group encounter where we draw them.

Probably not, but it is as valid as any other lesson drawn. If we beat Norwich tomorrow, we will not suddenly become a top half EPL club either. If we beat Inter, we won’t be marked down as favourites for Serie A. But lose to Ajax reserves and we are assuredly shocking.

    Go Figure!

  9. Good morning too all. Some Celtic men just can’t be satisfied. One day we’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, then when we’re beaten there’s a full blown crisis. Give the club a break please. We haven’t the finances for a start. We’re not world beaters the way we were in ’67.

The Spanish were far more expansive in their play in the final than in the opener. To me it seemed like they almost learned how to play that formation as the tournament went on.

No matter what the formation players still have to turn up, I’m not disputing that.

But having players in a role they are comfortable with that brings out the best in them is incredibly important.

Also, in those games neither team played with a regular wide-man, meaning the full-backs became increasingly important.

In the first games the italian wing-backs, or the widest in midfield, were naturally high so held the spanish full-backs in position, they had more room in final and as such, they had more room. This allowed them to spread the play wider and be, as I said, more expansive. Particularly Alba who had an outstanding game.

Ernie you say that HT statement is nonsense. Your own point doesn’t necessarily contradict HT’s. I lived in Bertchesgaden , eagles nest , for a while and Israel for quite a few years when I was a young traveller and have an interest in listening to people stories. When I first cam to NZ we had an elderly German neighbour. She went to Mass every day. Married a brit soldier after the war because none of the young men from her village in rural Germany came back from the Russian front. She had very good words to say about the National Socialists and blamed the downfall of the Reich on the obsessive persecution of the Jews. She went on to justify the persecutions, while denouncing the death camps by saying that before the war Jewish communists would come into her village and tell them that they would come and destroy their Church and take away their God. She recalled having her rosary beads ripped from her as a child. This fear of communism was obviously important in the common persons decision to embrace nazism, at least in Germany. I am not judging just telling it as I heard it so HT has a point and strange though it sounds it is not nonsense.

    My take on Celtic’s 3-4-1-2:

Played well, it is a very flexible and tricky formation for other sides to deal with. Wanyama, on the right of the defence and to a lesser extent Mulgrew on the left are allowed to make runs high up the field while the respective wingbacks drop back to cover. The centre should be controlled by two conservative CMs, while the attack is mainly reliant on the player behind the strikers. Kris Commons is best suited to this role, and one of the biggest let-downs of the Ajax games was Forrest in this posiiton, which admittedly didn’t last long. His abiities mean he is far better suited to coming in from the right and I don’t think he is a first pick in this formation.

The biggest plus in the games featuring this formation has to be the reinvention of Kris Commons as a playmaker. No one else at Celtic has come close to unseating him. It has also seen some very decent central midfield pairings in Brown/Ledley and McCourt/Ledley (less dynamic but better passing from McCourt). On the down side, I’ve yet to see the wingbacks really own their position, which feeds into the argument that it belongs to a bygone era where fitness levels weren’t as high.

It may well be that this Ajax game has scared Lenny away from it, but with the right personnel (in particular, Commons and Samaras), this formation may be key to delivering the goals Celtic need on August 1st.

Good morning fellow Celts from an overcast and raining Santa Ponsa (only slight upside all the sad b’s left towels on loungers are drookit :)

Missed all the chat on Ajax game, saw reports on score tho’ -never a big fan of pre-season games but they do indicate strength of the team and readiness for season ahead. There are examples when we have been drubbed in pre-season and won the league …one of the best pre-seasons was in 67 when the team were motoring. we are a long, long way away from that standard although will be pleasantly suprised if proved wrong of course.

We need to have an option to convert all the cross balls ….a striker who can burst the net with a heidi it’s not difficult to work that out but we seem to struggle to make it happen.

The good news is we have moved on from last year when we had an unsettled back line …big FF in place and we have sufficient cover in back 3 or 4 to cope with anything but major injury crises. That is no longer priority for me so well done Lenny and the board. No gripes in that dept this time out!

Still.feel we lack a playmaking midfielder…Ki is not favoured by Lenny & many Celtic fans which is a pity as he can pick the pass when the game is played at continental pace. Not really suitedto domestic game unless the opponents are playing fitba and we are seeing more doing that…so maybe a wee chance for him?

If he is punted …hope not…we must get a player who can put his foot on the ba’ and pick a pass…a good ranging penetrating pass…not the sideyweys shuffle that attempts to double for possession play at CP

Paddy is not an option sorry to his many fans but he is far too inconsistent and can only polay in short bursts …we have seen enough evidence that he will not cut it which is a shame because he has rare talent.

Jamesy Forrest now there is a player …works on his fitness and strength to add to an abundance of talent …really looking forward to watching him in action this season.

Vic67 can (dareisay) grow in stature this season felt he lacked authority in some games last season when we needed it most but enough evidence he can step right up and be more consistent this term

Beram back and soooo glad. alongside Joe or broonie doesn’t matter to me which…as they have similar strengths and some spl games we need them both

    in there

I want Sami to play in every game always have from the first minute i saw him …a wonderful talent…we must find a way of harnessing his pace and driving at terrified opponents

Can Ghoops click from the off this season? He seems to have head trouble …not like J Cadette who was unfortunate in that sense…but ghoops seems to allow stuff to put him off his game…he has strength and we have seen his touch destroy teams ..especially the team who are no more …he can get onto low crossed balls (not heid!!!) when we break and that will count in Europa (I think CL will be a step too far for us this season ..again just being honest as a few seem to forget we got to Europa last season due to Sion being complete muppets. Although we did well enough when we got there in spells in some games and the defensive problems that did for us might be less of an isssue..

ach we might make the group stages of CL after all ;-)

ah just wish this rain would stop …booked a wee massage at 1600 later today the nice lady was telling me it would be a hard massage as i was telling her about the pains in my quads and calves from cycling …at least I think that is what she meant by a hard massage…

Agree with what your saying about Forrest, he shouldnt be central…in this formation…

    …yet.

When he played at the top of our diamond midfield he was excellent last year.

This formation has different requirements on him though which to me require a more tactically astute mind, enter Kris Commons.

But not playing forrest in the centre of the pitch would be a grave mistake for Celtic.

You keep a player like him wide to learn the game, then bring them into the centre as they mature.

The “central winger” is a more dominant position now than ever before in world football

Take the difference between say, Ashley Young behind the striker, and Gerrard behind the striker.

Young was a winger, raised to be a winger, put central. Stevie G was a central mid, box to box, engine room type, shoved higher up the pitch.

Everything Young recieves in that position is wide, to both sides, helping drag the play and double up on full-backs. Stevie G on the other hand plays the classic number attacking mid.

    Same position, compltely different roles.

Another good example is Mezut Ozil, who constantly drags play wide depsite being the central attacking mid.

Its a modern type of winger that I think we would be foolish not to encourage on a good prospect.

    Just my opinion of course

As I said I am retelling what I heard , fear of one extreme was a factor in people moving to another extreme Nazism. The old lady said she liked the National Socialist Party but she also said that the mass murder of the Jewish people was wrong. That was just one conversation and I couldn’t get it out of my mind whenever I said hello in Church. Hard for me to understand and never will unless I was in her shoes or those of the agitating red Russian Jews. The young Germans I knew in Bavaria and Berlin had a very different life view shaped by their own experiences and choices as did the young and old Jewish people that I shared a beer and story with. I feel lucky that my life has been listening to those stories and not being part of one.
