McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

    Bada,

The one I mention was a booking early doors. Maybe 10 mins. Edge of their box.

I wasn’t running down Mcginn earlier. I was laughing at the reason for buying him.

    Frank Ryan,

So we won’t see any posts from you decrying the manager for picking x instead of y? ;)

I don’t believe I have in the past?? But stand to be corrected

  2. At the game I thought the VVD tackle merited a yellow, despite returning at 2AM furious I had to have a look at the recording and I am still of the opinion the player was not in an ” obvious ” goalscoring position as the rules state.

I am of the view Thompson had no intention of allowing us a fair or balanced application of the rules, as he inconsistently applied yellows to our players and ignored Aberdeen for similar offences,Considine as an example.

NL was right to call him out.

As for McInnes having our measure, sorry dont agree,he had the referee stopping play, awarding fouls and effectively blunting our efforts, for those fair weather fans who have only been around since MON and are crying for the return of the 15% mob, kindly take note as NO GAME would be in our control as instanced last night.

My sister was telling me about a Horizon programme I must watch on catch up about how human beings reach decisions.

It seems that there is an inbuilt mechanism that diverts us from looking at evidence if that evidence contradicts an already held world view.

(It would also be the case that any already held world view causes us to interpret the evidence to suit, something that we need to be very aware of when we are convinced something is true, because whilst it might be, there might be a missing element that makes it not so).

Had the programme been looking for evidence to support this theory they need look no further than football supporters in general and CQN posters as a segment of that group.

It would seem there is always a bias at play whether we are aware of it or not.

As a simple example I mentioned a podcast on tsfm with Stuart Cosgrove. It is rather good but because it was Cosgrove and somewhere in the past he said something that some folk were offended by, the focus was on Cosgrove and not his message.

Perhaps listening to the message would require a change of world view on Cosgrove and that requires effort. Effort to explore the evidence in his words, effort to contemplate it and effort to admit our world view was inaccurate.

Lack of effort can be described as lazy (you can see where the link is here) and perhaps that is just a feature of the human condition.

It is interesting that in his book The Road Less Travelled M Scott Peck concludes that the original sin was laziness. Instead of making the effort to understand the true nature of things through experience young Adam and Eve were tempted into taking a short cut to acquire the knowledge of good and evil, doing so by experience was too much hard work.

I absolutely applaud you efforts to put your hard work at the disposal of us all, but it would make your effort less if others were aware that it is not about being right or wrong but being enlightened by what we all have to share with each other. Be that Lenny’s tactical acumen or the meaning of life.

The frog says “Hello ” by the way. ;)

Hmmm…..possibly yet we’ve Bloggers that think Celtic are set out too cautiously and Bloggers that think the opposite, NFL gets ‘critique’ whatever he does?

I thought his immediate response was positive, CM to CB sadly he was five inches shorter than VVD who’d have headed away the cross for Rooney’s goal.

I’m not convinced with AS and LG as a partnership.

Yes – Neil will get ‘critique’ whatever he does because everyone has a view and no (thanks to the wonder of the interweb) the mechanism to express it. I’m of the opinion that opinions are not equally valid, but happy for everyone to have the right to express them. I’m also happy to pick up on them when I think they’re talking mince – as everyone does with mine! That’s freedom of expression for you.

I think you’re tight that Neil’s response was positive – I thought it did leave us a bit more exposed in midfield. I’m not sure my proposal would have led to a different outcome. I’m happy to continue to support Neil. Everyone can have an opinion, but there’s only 1 manager!!

This blog is just everyones opportunity to talk Celtic. We have all watched poor Celtic teams over the years. The 1990’s were brutal.I wouldn’t have missed it for all the world and those dire times were on my mind as i took my seat in Seville. The Celtic Football and Athletic Club. Ain’t we blessed. HH.

  8. Listen out for Delahunt glossing over King’s convictions ,and telling guys who mention it ,to hurry up and make their point.Pretty important point if you are giving your money to a concicted fraudster i would have thought.

Thomson made a game changing decision last night. A yellow for a foul would have drawn comment but no one could have said later it was a game changer.

Whenever Celtic find themselves in a competitive match in Scotland the result is invariably affected by a refereeing decision.

In short we need to be 20 odd points better than the rest for refereeing not to matter. I call it insidious refereeing and it will go on as long as the SFA are resonsible for referees from recruitment, training appointing and performance assessment. Far too much influence on the results concentrated in the one place. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The SPFL must take over the assessment responsibility by having assessors reporting to them and not the SFA. Appoints to be jointly agreed.

The SPFL are the customer here and the SFA the service provider. In no other industry but football does the service provider assess how good they are. The customer does that.

The SFA need to be reformed into service providers to leagues accountable to the leagues and through them clubs then supporters.

Thomson may have acted without any bias in his decision but he should not find himself in a position where that charge can be made.

The whole governance set up lends itself to corruption and the bitter fruits of that set up are manifest to see for those with eyes prepared to.

    Re The Karagandy throw-in warnings.

Knowing a team’s tactics and succesfully stopping them are two entirely different things.

    I agree.

We knew Barca’s fondness for pressing when they don’t have the ball and keeping possession when they do have it. In most games we got our tactics right to counter this. In one game, despite playing largely similar tactics, we came grossly unstuck.

    I agree.

Karagandy’s equivalents in the EPL, Stoke City, had several succesful seasons exploiting the long throw. Every manager, even the geniuses, knew it was coming. They still managed to use that limited tactic to good effect.

    True.

It seems to me that most people on here judge how successful a tactic has been by the result. If you lose, the deduction is that you got your tactics wrong.

Not so sure that is entirely correct, SFTB. It’s not as if the criticism is not there when we win! People use different ways to analyse a game, pick up on different points and come to different conclusions. Not sure how you’d demonstrate how most people arrive at their conclusion.

How come then that a manager with NFL’s wining record is still classed as tactically naive/ out-thought/ a rookie non-learner?

I have my own thoughts on the answer and they are mostly to do with a pre-determination to make the facts fit no matter how hard you must squeeze them. That, and a relentless desire to pursue the big C Keevins/Durham method and cause wind-up and upset.

    ———————————————–

Confirmation bias is a popular (natural?) approach when making analyses.

We are still guilty of very lazy journalism on here indeed.

I’m no journalist. I’m just using a blog to shoot the breeze on what happens in the footie So there’s no real standard I need to be held to. It’s opinion – nothing more.

Re: Karagandy thrown ins – as I say, I would expect our scouts picked up on this. We could have dealt with it better during the game. Did we fail to prepare? Who knows.

    In Neil I trust.

I thought we were more than comfortable up to the ordering off.

Two chances at least and Stokes possibly fouled at one of them and Aberdeen well contained.

The ordering off changed everything Hayes received the ball in the area Mulgrew would have occupied and pressured Hayes. Arguably VVD would have covered their second.

The team put out suggests NL had learned from his previous encounter. The only question about that previous set up is why Briton was not picked.

There is no such thing as a fact – mathematics is the only truth – and even that is disputed! It was the fault of the scouts for not identifying? Here’s some other possibilities :

    – Our scouts DID highlight their propensity for long throw-ins and set-pieces and the information wasn’t passed on to the players with enough emphasis.

    – The players did know about the possibility of long throw-ins and set pieces, but chose to ignore it.

    – The players knew about it and tried to do something about it but (for whatever reason) failed to deal with it well-enough.

    Lot of possible reasons.

Also – you highlight that we learned their game, took account, changed our tactics and won our next encounter. That kinda negates what you were saying earlier – that Neil doesn’t learn a lesson?

Why do posters feel the need to compare our current form, success and overall performances to the bleak days of the ’90s?

Why not compare the present situation to the mid ’60s to mid ’70s for example?

I was there in the ’90s it was bleak, it was depressing and by God it hurt.

However, it’s worthless claiming that you’d have bitten the hand off anyone offering you today’s situation back in those days.

The club is an entirely different one to the one that saw us go 9 years without a title win and 6 without a trophy of any description.

For several years we’ve punched above our weight in Europe but continued downsizing and the selling of our best talent has resulted in us getting our arse handed to us on a plate this year. There appears to be a lack of desire for growth and clearly I don’t mean financial growth here because our plc could never be accused of that, heaven forbid!

Celtic will win the league at a canter this year but with our resources we should be doing that.

In domestic cup competitions our performances and results have been dreadful on the whole. Poor tactics, management and individual displays have been the cause, that’s undeniable.

This is more of a rant than anything constructive I just got pissed off reading so many posters stating how if we think things are bad now then we should remember how bad things once were.
