McLeish frank admission, Aberdeen get it right. Will we?

1909

BBC’s series, Scotland’s Game, has become compulsive viewing. Tales of redemption for Celtic, Hearts and others, and tales of woe for some. Last night’s episode had a few remarkably frank admissions.

One which caught the eye was former-Rangers former-manager, Alex McLeish, who admitted his title winning team “would’ve been behind [Celtic]” had they not funded their squad through EBTs. We should all take note for when the Big Tax Case reaches the Supreme Court.

Pleased to see the appropriate amount of damage done to Rangers by majority owner and chairman, David Murray, was correctly attributed, with one or two character defects throw in for good measure by contributing journalist, Tom English.

Aberdeen have nailed their proverbial flag to the mast this week with the word, “No previous meeting found” on their fixture list comment on a forthcoming game against Newco. It’s a simple comment, it’s accurate, has been confirmed in writing by Uefa and will position the club shoulder-to-shoulder with their fans.

Get it right, Celtic.

    I don’t know about a GOD.

In my lifetime we’ve had a Celtic 9 in a row, a hun 9 in a row and now probably another Celtic 9, and hopefully 10, in a row.

During their 9 I couldn’t see how we were ever going to compete with them again. Wim stopped their 10 but then they won the next few again.

I wouldn’t put my house on us making, or being allowed to win 10. I just get a feeling we won’t see it. Perhaps it will be due to an Atlantic League or

    some other initiative.

All that said, I hope you’re right.

In my old local “Fountain Bar” an old Celtic fan (who knew more than I will ever) always said listen to the words of “Flower of Scotland” it’s your best rebel song ever………

I would never wish any will on the football team but can understand why some don’t like the establishment……..but the establishment is crumbling and long may it continue

That Sevco mob will be sick, and Lee is still a tout

  4. Well done Scotland. Five goals in any international natch is very good. Hopefully this will help build some confidence for the rest of the campaign.

  5. Gerry- i know that, my point is would he have started if it wasn-t for being transferred for a ridiculous amount of money?

Don’t like this talk of beating them 5 nil etc.

*aye me tae, 1-0 will do me. When we won 7-1, the original 5-1, Dr Jo’s 5-1 and MON’s 6-2 they were favourites.

  10. Not posted in a while but thought you might want to hear a funny story I heard today. I picked up a woman from the airport today. She was on her way back from Belfast. She said the plane was delayed for two hours. She asked if there was a football match on over there. I said Rangers were playing Linfield. Oh she said, well a good few of them weren’t allowed on. Apparently one of the stewards said if you have one more drink then you’re not getting on. My passenger then said someone called the stewardess a cow. That was that and the woman said a bunch of them then trudged off looking for taxis to head for the boat.

It cheered me up no end.

  11. Brendan has been cute with the press for the game on Saturday —giving nothin away. Just need to make sure Level 5 puppets at the Herald don’t try and grab a comment from one of our players. The media thought an Ibrox club in the top league would help circulation — the decline has accelerated. The SFA also wonder whether all the gerrymandering has been worth it as clearly GASL has his own money making agenda.

    Timreaper,

Agree now we have financial strength and momentum they can only dream off. We could have been there 2 years ago and have an additional £50M to play with ( yep we all know what happened ). This is the crucial for Sevco. The have flung all their cash and soft loans at it with the players one year older and slower next year. They will have no additional funds to strengthen in the next Windows. They will have to sell Tavernier or the overweight penalty taker. Saturday is absolutely crucial for them.

One nil will do me ( even in the last minute ).

Ghuy in my work just left your place of employment.

    S. McG. Knows you. Told me your full name before you outed yourself on blog tonight.

I outed Dallas to him. He’s seems a good ghuy and believe it or not said nice things about you and Dallas. :-))))

Never had much interest in International football Gerry to be honest, I went to Scotland games with the old man a couple of times and him getting abuse for his accent put me off for life:)

I rarely watch any football any more G except Celtic, no enough time and sickened with the money in the game. Tried a couple of times not to watch Celtic but I just can’t do it.

I’m happy if Scotland do well with Celtic players in the team.

  14. I mind walking down from Castlemilk to get a lift into Scotland games when I was in my early teens.

It annoyed me about the booing of Celtic players and huns wearing rangers scarves as if they were Scottish ones.

The eighties changed that…some of the huns I knew started supporting Engerlund due to the influx of their players. Not my friends though that supported Rangers back then, they eventually turned their backs on the oldco as they travelled all over the place to follow Scotland.

If you dip into hun blogs, you will see where I’m coming from.

My best mate that was an oldco supporter, now has three grown up sons that are season books at parkhead/Celtic park.

    You reap what you sow.

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    Gerry, thanks for asking.

They only conceded five today as opposed to six last week.. However, they scored two less than week and lost by five goals today.

Hopefully, that is the last time they have to play in Larkhall this season after consecutive visits for league and cup games.

  16. Sipsini

The Huns supporting Engurlund was through 1990….they hates Ireland doing well, they would jump in a frying pan if they thought it would outdo “the tims” I actually don’t mind England football team, but again when it comes to real football in the words of Fairground Attraction…. “It’s got to be CELTIC”

  17. Aye I don’t buy into this talk of humping the Huns 5 0 or whatever. I’ve been to many of these games.and you never know what could happen. I would be quite happy with a 1 _0 win.so fellow tims don’t get to cocky.

  18. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Glad Scotland won but am armchair fan at best.

Sipsini – read your post with interest. On 15 November 1989 I went to two Scotland matches on the same day.

    My first and my last.

Scotland 1 Norway 1 meant we qualified for France ’90.

Was in the non- Celtic end of Hampden with this clown behind me shouting incessantly for 90 minutes for us to get into ‘these fenian bead rattlers’. Yes – Norway!

No disagreement a all……but I think the times are a changing, I will make sure my daughter is as Scottish as Scottish will be (nothing to do with football)……. No hatred ever in my household :-)

Me, am old enough and stupid enough to have a different view but am trying my best not to let my frailties influence her :-)))

  20. GFTB…

There was meant to be a /ninties there;)

I was just trying to make the point that a lot jumped on the Engerlund bandwagon and it has escalated over the years…ie the circus they hold every year.

Some others walked away like my mates sickened to the stomach of it years ago… More will.

    A good result tonight. HH

  21. Good for Scotland to get 5 goals. Malta competed until the red card and penalty for the third goal. Ridiculous decision by the ref as there was no contact. Watched the Colts yesterday. They were up against it, but their defending at times was not good, to put it mildly. One of the Livi goals was a header from a corner and it crept over the line at the keeper’s right hand post…..which was not guarded, and neither was the other post. Always thought it was basic to keep fullbacks on the posts. We got caught out in Israel for the same reason. Anyway, bring on the Sevconians !

  22. Anyhow – on a brighter note!

Argentina have sent Messi home to Barca – very doubtful for this weekend and possibly struggling for CL game.

With Neymar still recovering from the Olympics – things are looking up.

    Yes? :-)

  23. Someone should tell Sky that the highlights of England game they are showing is a World Cup qualifier and not Euros, which they were knocked out of by Iceland.

I have a 15 yr old daughter, she sees herself as Scottish….well, she is.

I never outed myself, if any eijit from the dark side read the blog they will know exactly who I am, the wee proddie enclave I now reside is about 200yds from my birthplace and about 3 or 4 family homes….trust me, every Hun in this vicinity knows me and funnily enough (to my face) there is never a problem ….. I actually get on well with them all, but since 2012 they don’t talk to me about football, when the are all dressed up with their funeral trousers for their wee walks they might try and wind me up but my smile puts them back in their box…..JNP remember I have told them all I had to leave HMRC because I was part of the tax case (totally bollocks) but they add 1 + 1 together and get 0……..all good fun :-)

  26. Being Scottish I always wish our national team all the best when they play.

Long time ago I would actually pay cash to support them.

What finished my support for them was a culmination of things, beginning with Kenny being dropped so he didn’t beat George Young’s record of consecutive caps. The list of excelent uncapped, or rarely capped Celtic players is exhaustive.

My last Scotland game was when le petite merde scored two goals V Spain, I think, and the attending Hun support still berated him because he had previously played for Celtic, ( he was plying his trade in France at the time).

I can clearly remember, in retaliation, screaming at Jim Bett, ” Bett you’re f@#kin useless, Tommy Burns should be playing left mid”, much to the consternation of my friends but not as much as to the knuckle dragging simians trying to figure out where my shout had originated from.

Minutes later, embued by my apparent success in upsetting the bosch, I fear I may have gone too far by bellowing, ” Haw Cooper, ya wee sandancing w@&ker, you’re p@sh, couldnae lace Owen Archdeacon’s boots”.

I do believe my irony was lost on the horde.

My companions, however, threatened that they themselves, would waste me, should I contemplate upsetting the marauding horde further with more comment, as they searched in vain for the fenian dissenter, berating the idols of Ibrox.

All ended well, as King Kenny scored a magnificent third. Still never been back since.

The last Scotland game I was at was against Italy a few years ago.

Thought we were unlucky due to a dodgy decision.

Like yourself I just watch Scotland games on the telly now and like to see us win.

Only one team puts the hairs up on my neck stand up and that is Celtic…especially the walk on.

I’ll be going on Saturday, some might disagree on here but by feck I hope we give them a real doing. HH

This might be shallow but Gordon Strachan could make me a Scotland fan……

By the way again deep down, I am a two face bam, as I make sure Miss GFTB is a proud wee Scot, she doesn’t need my failings :-)

  29. Starry Plough 9.55pm

Exactly…..it’s always Celtic for me, but if any Celtic player is involved I want them to do well, when it comes to Gordon Strachan….even better….that Bhoy in his own words “I didn’t come here as a fan but I have left as one”

    That’s good enough for me
