McLeish frank admission, Aberdeen get it right. Will we?

1909

BBC’s series, Scotland’s Game, has become compulsive viewing. Tales of redemption for Celtic, Hearts and others, and tales of woe for some. Last night’s episode had a few remarkably frank admissions.

One which caught the eye was former-Rangers former-manager, Alex McLeish, who admitted his title winning team “would’ve been behind [Celtic]” had they not funded their squad through EBTs. We should all take note for when the Big Tax Case reaches the Supreme Court.

Pleased to see the appropriate amount of damage done to Rangers by majority owner and chairman, David Murray, was correctly attributed, with one or two character defects throw in for good measure by contributing journalist, Tom English.

Aberdeen have nailed their proverbial flag to the mast this week with the word, “No previous meeting found” on their fixture list comment on a forthcoming game against Newco. It’s a simple comment, it’s accurate, has been confirmed in writing by Uefa and will position the club shoulder-to-shoulder with their fans.

Get it right, Celtic.

I like that. Typically German and very imaginative. Wonder what our tunnel theme would be? Btw if Sevco ever got to play St Pauli an old jungle tune would go down well as they walk out. ‘The bells of hell go tingalingaling’… Not quite the Acdc anthem but funnier.

Ah,one of my favourites. Good choice.

I can confirm it is also a favourite of MACJAY who,at my suggestion when asked for a sea shanty-might have been rhyming slang,btw!-sung it on his Christmas cruise round Sydney Harbour!

Might be in a minority, but I am looking forward to the game on Saturday.

I well remember the excitement of our first home games against Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ross County, when they entered the top league

It’s good to bring new blood into the league. Refreshing. Stops the competition becoming stale :)

I think that’s a great idea. He certainly deserves one. Our second highest scorer, the last Lion to turn out for us,and an absolute gentleman too.

There is the obvious reservation, that it will be a regular target for defilement by the local nasties. And there’s a fair few, natch. They’ll claim it to be provocative,no doubt.

Civil unrest,I suppose you could call it. A familiar term/threat when it comes to them. Application of law might be a good idea now and then,I wonder why it’s not been tried?

Your last post reeked of arrogance IMO. It’s not a given that we’ll win on Saturday – it never is. It’s an important game in terms of possibly putting down a marker but it’s the same for The Rangers. They might get another worldy from one of their midfielders, Miller could catch out our centre halfs, the ref could red card one of ours. Do we play nervous De Vries or Gordon? Slow Lustig or new guy Gamboa? There are a lot of variables and with the deid club you could never take anything for granted. It’ll be the same with this lot.

Our front 4 is excellent now but centre mid is a problem and we still ship soft goals. Hopefully that will improve as they develop a better understanding but for now we’re a long way from the finished article.

I promised on here that there would be no predictions on scores or selections from me this season. I’m an effing jinx-that was for you,MACJAY,yaN erudite bugger(!)

    And I get your point-to a degree-about VFR’s post.

But what are we supposed to do as we head into a game against a crowda charlatans that none of us honestly want to be playing?

Judge them by the standards(!) they have displayed so far this season-as we would for any other upcoming opposition-or refuse to discuss it because any honest assessment of where we are and where they are backs up VFR,even if it rankles with our innate aversion to hubris?

It’s a blog, mate. Nothing VFR said was wrong on paper.

    An Tearmann,

Good to hear from you and I understand your POV re Them and the game on Saturday.

As far asI hear the HUE weekend went well and I’m sure we will hear more about it when they come down!

As for the Apple/ Tax thing, I have no idea what is really going on.

I have chosen the little known loophole in Irish tax law.

It’s called the Opt Out Of Tax facility, or OOT, for short!

    If you are still around.

Remember….its very possible to take a different view to Mr Ferguson.

You see, Mr Ferguson is a Unionist historian, not that there is anything intrinsically wrong with that:)

However, he does rather tend to promote certain views, that many, many historians disagree with….He is a slightly younger version of David Starkey, similar to Andrew Roberts….i.e ..Conservative historians.

The do not want to provide an accurate, balanced analysis. Their personal political beliefs should not drive their particular analysis of historical events….but it most certainly does.

In my eyes, Ferguson’s work……is celebrity/tv history…which panders to a certain political ideology, nothing more.

There are thousands of historians who manage to give a balanced analysis of the same themes, without soaking their work in ego and right-wing hogwash.

Harvard, Oxford…my response to that is….So What.

History is driven by the winners. Ferguson won the PR race. His face, his voice,is everywhere on certain channels.

And there’s the answer as to why.

  21. VFR800A8 and Bobby Murdoch

I’m not getting shouty about it – I just think it’s dangerous to talk about any game as if it’s a foregone conclusion. On paper we are definitely better but if the players show complacency it could go wrong. We played them last year and got knocked out the Cup, when we had a much better squad than them (albeit with a crap coach). I’m not nervous about this game just now. That might change on Saturday morning though :)
