Media fast and loose with Neil Lennon comments

906

The annual raft of idle speculation unsettling Celtic’s playing and managerial resources is well underway.  One newspaper headline today proclaimed, “Celtic boss wants Canaries to approach him”, based on Neil Lennon when talking about moving to England saying, “There has been no offer, there has been no concrete phone call or anything like that, so I haven’t really had a decision to make on it”.  Countless others have followed in a similar theme.

Neil Lennon has not really hidden the fact that he would like to manage in the FA Premier League one day, but none of the journos with pages to fill have any notion on his thoughts of dropping a division in England.  In the real world, Neil is showing no reticence in pursuing team development plans for next season.  We’ll be involved in Champions League football two months from tomorrow, the manager is busy on the matters in hand.

Best wishes to John Brown for his inspired attempts to take down Newco Rangers.  More power to you, John, I hope you have any many lemmings lined up as possible.  Some months ago the plotters had a notion that they would starve Newco shareholders into handing over the club for zilch, or £1 less than Rangers were sold to a liquidation expert for.  It remains possible that Sevco will starve, but notions that there will be an outcome for the plotters which is more desirable than an existence under the current crew are fading by the day.

Don’t forget, we’ve Tommy Gemmell, live on the blog, on Friday between 13:00 and 16:00.  He’ll be here to chat and answer your questions.

Issue 20 of CQN Magazine, CQLisboN, is out and enjoying great reviews. Click here to read for FREE.

  1. Brian McClair had an excellent scoring record that’s for sure , like most strikers could be infuriating at times. He had a good habit of still managing to score when having a bad game . Level headed sort of bloke and made the most of his abilities , but Macca ahead of him for me

  2. McClairNo1,

Again you are correct. Pound for Pound Brian McClair was one of the best players to grace both ourselves and Man Utd. (IMO Man U got him for a song with a questionable tribunal fee.)

I also have the upmost respect for any mathematician. Was Brian McClair a prototype geek ?

    Beautifully put Corkcelt.

The really great thing is that you and ernie don’t have a vote between you.

  5. Have you ever looked at the Likes a club has on Facebook?

Celtic recently made it past the 1M likes mark but it has to be said that these LIKE figures are probably not that reflective of levels of interest in a club but more to do with how good their marketing team is re getting to grips with social media.

A more interesting stat on Facebook sits next to the LIKES number and gives a much smaller number for People Talking About This.

People Talking About This is the number of unique users who have created a “story” about a page in a seven-day period. On Facebook, stories are items that display in News Feed. Users create stories when they like a page, post on the page wall, like a post, comment on a post, share a post, answer a question and so on.

In the last week CQN Magazine has a figure of 3701 People Talking About This. Other stats for this page that may be of interest when you consider what follows are we have 10,490 People Engaged and a Weekly Total Reach of 63,381.

So for all these figures – and they are all 100% accurate – the smallest figure, and probably the one closest to actual reality is the Talking About This number. CQN doesn’t manipulate these numbers by legitimately advertising on Facebook and if we did it would swell our numbers. I suspect that is what most big football clubs do – so they can claim to have 20 Million likes but this doesn’t mean 20M supporters.

So what am I going on about? Other than changing the subject from the Yes/ No debate – here are some numbers for you to consider re Talking About this in relation to the English Premier League and Celtic.

    PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS CLUB…

    Manchester United – 2,313,148

Liverpool – 2.3M (developed their page and figure is rounded up)

    Manchester City – 1,097,822

    Arsenal – 825,743

    Chelsea – 383,702

So these teams – in the Champions League this season or next seem to have big numbers.

    Next up is

    CELTIC – 141,442

    Tottenham – 118,720

Then there is a gap with the rest under 100k

    Everton – 66,570

    Southampton – 62,602

    Sunderland – 57,823

    Swansea – 45,946

    West Ham – 41,285

    Aston Villa – 35,570

    Crystal Palace – 34,890

    Newcastle – 25,691

    Hull – 24,717

    Norwich – 19,773

    Cardiff – 18,454

    WBA – 16,992

    Stoke – 16,107

    Fulham – 15,417

Put these lower numbers in the context of CQN Magazine’s number of 3701.

If you are a pay per view broadcaster, seeking a return on the money invested in football, you would not be bothered about losing any of these smaller clubs in comparison to Celtic.

That’s probably the sensible move for him, don’t know if Hibs will want to stick with the current managerial team after there season, he would be a popular choice Ian Murray.

Frank McCavennie was a great striker no doubt, but Brian McClair was slightly above him for me, all round game, tho I can understand why some of you guys think Frank, I mean who can forget that centenary year, my greatest season supporting the Celtic until 98

    Peace be with you all

  7. aiden bhoy

He certainly was. I liked McClair and admire how much he achieved but he didn’t have that star quality that Macca had that season.

  8. The centenary year was probably the best season I have had supporting Celtic.

Stopping 10 in a row was massive. But there was just something magical about 88.

I don’t know if he was a geek, but he was university educated I’m sure I read somewhere, the total opposite from his strike partner of that time.

    Peace be with you

Thinking back Brian had a spell of games , probably in his last season for us ,when he was sensational , scoring regularly and easily our best player

  13. winning captains @ 20.25 hrs.

    Very interesting and topical.

I totally agree with your last paragraph summary. The future and likelihood is self explanatory.

One statistic which sticks out is Man City. Prior to their big money input and subsequent exposure they would also be listed in the “gap with the rest under 100k”

    Money does indeed talk.

    HH.

  14. Aiden Bhoy

Agree, as an out an out striker, Macca ( speed, movement and no lost causes) ahead of McLair,

All round player though – McLair, midfield and up front

    Hail Hail

I’m the same, the centenary year was special, remember listening to the scottish cup semi against Hearts on the tranny ha ha, was at the Dundee game, crammed in to the Rangers end, but then I was old enough to have a few in 98, so that season holds good memories ha ha.

    Peace be with you

I was still young when Brian was at Celtic, but I do remember some of his goals, and just remember that season , his last was it 35 goals he scored, which was incredible at the time, tho when Henrik came it became normal.

    Peace be with you

  17. Greenpinata: Or many folks are simply glory-hunters. When Man City go tits up, around about the time the shiek loses interest, those likes will evaporate like water in the shiek’s desert. Celtic, on the other hand, will maintain numbers regardless. That’s the difference between a casual “fan” and a supporter … :-)

  18. Thanks to Alba. FFS! .

    Feel sick.

    Donald Findlay followed by McCann

  19. Think it says it all that Alex Ferguson said that pound for pound McClair was one his best ever signings.

  20. For ten years Paul has provided this vehicle to counter the MSM innuendo and campaigns against us.

Yet some of us still use their stories to base our assumptions.

Still worse we provide personal insights into our own interpretation of interviews.

    When will we ever learn.

Neil’s responses to unwelcome questions are measured, thoughtful and respectful to his current employer and to clubs and managers in the Expensive Premier League.

Neil has earned his plaudits at Celtic Park and in the broader world of football managers.

He will continue to flourish and enhance his reputation.

He deserves our respect and support in whatever he does.

In another couple of years the Expensive Premiere League owners of the top clubs will be running up the Celtic Way to tempt him down south.

If he goes he leaves with my grateful thanks and appreciation.

    But in the meantime
