Midtjylland look as ill prepared as Celtic

291

After two preseason games we have Bristol City tomorrow, Preston North End on Saturday before Midtjylland in Champions League qualification one week today.  Midtjylland have played one more game then us since their return to training last month and start their league campaign on Friday evening.

Our only consolation is the Danes look as ill prepared for a fixture of this magnitude as we are.  There are only two group stage places available in the non-champions route of the tournament; you would be forgiven for thinking this possibility was not worth hoping for, but we are in strange times.

By ranking, those two places are earmarked for Benfica and Shakhtar Donetsk.  Shakhtar have not played a competitive game since March and Benfica’s only competitive game in that period was a cup final in May (they lost).  The Euros is another complication for preseason regimes.

There is a clear opportunity for a well-prepared team to punch above their weight in these qualifiers.  Ange has a lot of work to do if he’s to take advantage.  We will learn more against Midtjylland.

  1. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    BIG GEORGE

Why is that good news re. Lawwell ?

    ===========================

I think there are potential positives to have Celtic’s case – and that of clubs outwith the five ‘big’ leagues – being made at the European Club level. So, if restricted to that role, then I think it is a positive – my belief is that it is better having Lawwell’s voice in that arena than having no voice at all.

How effective his input is, I would agree is very much up for debate – especially given how the options for teams outwith Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France to get into the highest-level competition have continually narrowed.

However, the route to alternative European competitions has expanded with the addition of the Europa League and, this year, the Europa Conference League – not ideal, but it does give more clubs the opportunity to play against continental opposition.

I was stressing – it is only a potential positive IF he is not involved in the operational side of the organisation – i.e., that he doesn’t get involved in anything to do with the team / football operation / transfers / scouting / agents, etc.

    Just my view.

  2. Which CQNer am I describing:

“He has held a position on the European Club Association board since 2014, representing Celtic and Scottish football’s interests on the continent.

And he also sits on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council, a body that discusses key issues such as Champions League reform.”

    Cheerio for now.

  3. We all knew PL would have a seat on the Board,to enable him to continue in his UEFA role.Just another whinge from the perpetual whingers. The man haunts their everyday lives.A sickness,I think.

If he is anywhere near recruitment, then Mc Kay,Ange, are not worth a monkeys, and should not be there.

According to the experts on here,we have signed a guy we don’t need.Really?Who will play wide right next week in Europe? No backup for Jamesy.

Now that we have all of your hard earned cash we can do the following-

    Sign no one

Tell you that Lawwell is here to stay..

    Deception? It’s the Celtic Board’s way don’t you know….

  5. Not in the least surprised Lawwell is still on the board, I wonder who or next Chairman will be?

  6. I dont feel deceived at all. or lied too. Or mis-informed.

Nothing has changed about how the PLC will operate or perform. Some changes in personnel, big deal.

If you dont like it, you could always not buy a season ticket, not buy the merchandise, or even moan day after day after day about what you dont like.

Winning trebles wasnt enough. Moan moan moan.

    Some Tory apologist no doubt.

  8. ONIL,

we have heard it over and over and over and over, and over.

At some point you need to move on.

I am more bothered that Bankier is still on the board as

I still dont know what he does except have a go at real

Celtic fans at the club AGM and also his company held

    a box at the hunnery

    Thanks for your reply.

I think the use of Duhan suggests he is still involved.

    Just my opinion

  11. lets all do the huddle on

does P67 get paid for putting links to the daily record and evening times in his stories

    bought and sold

  12. PL is a member of the football club board, he’s no longer director on the plc board. A very important distinction

  13. It’s the football club he’s on the board of, not the plc. There’s a very big difference

  14. CELTIC40ME

what does the football board actually do? There is no mention on the website. in my company we have several levels of board and in many countries, for tax efficiency, hence a lot of the time directors are just employees who sign off on a sub board after the top board has made a real decision

The PLC vs Football Board at Celtic and other clubs has always intrigued me

  15. The same Peter Lawwell whose family were almost burned to death, because of his association with Celtic, is this the person that many have a hatred for? Really?? por cierto.

STRATEGY, THE BUSINESS MODEL AND OBJECTIVES

Notwithstanding the current challenges arising from Covid-19, the

Group’s objective is unchanged – to create a world class football

club through our strategy and business model for growth focusing on

    three key areas:

    (i) Core Business – football operations with a self-sustaining

financial model, relying upon: youth academy; player

development; player recruitment; management of the player

pool; sports science and performance analysis; and football

    success.

(ii) Development of the Celtic Brand – incorporating the Celtic

Park Masterplan and the development of international revenues.

(iii) Improvement in the football environment in which

Celtic plays – representation within football governance and

administration at domestic and European level.

    THE BUSINESS REVIEW

The principal activity of the Group is the operation of a professional

football club, with related and ancillary activities. The principal activity

of the Company is to control and manage the main assets of the

business whilst the majority of operating activity is carried out by a

subsidiary of Celtic plc, Celtic F.C. Limited. As a result, both of these

companies are managed and controlled as a single entity in order to

achieve the objectives of the Group.

The operation of a professional football club encompasses a wide

    range of activities including: football operations and investment;

    operation of the Celtic FC Youth Academy; match ticketing;

    merchandising; partner programmes; marketing and brand protection;

multimedia; stadium operations; facilities and property; catering

and hospitality; public relations and supporter relations; and human

    resources.

The Group has three key revenue streams:

    (i) Football and Stadium Operations;

    (ii) Merchandising; and

(iii) Multimedia and Other Commercial Activities.

A segmental analysis of these streams is reported in Note 5 to the

Financial Statements. Football and stadium operations includes all

revenue in relation to all football operations, ticket office, stadium

and youth development. Merchandising includes all retail, wholesale

and e-commerce activities. Multimedia and other commercial

activities include all other revenue generating departments including

sponsorship and rights sales. Given the nature of the business, all

revenue streams are inextricably linked to the success of the first

    team.

Each of these divisions have been impacted in different ways by

Covid-19 and this, along with the actions taken by management to

mitigate the impact, are discussed in more detail below.

    ————————

    No problem.

For the record, I don’t disagree with you – it would be hard to given the continued involvement of Duhan, the switching from target A to target B, the slow pace of recruitment, risking millions to save thousands, etc., – all characteristics of the approach we have seen year on year under the bold Pedro.

That said – from what I’ve heard from, and read about, both McKay and Ange, I’m very hopeful for the future. Given how late both are in the door, its probably inevitable that there is a bit of a gradual move from prior approaches / relationships to how we will operate going forward. It is a big juggernaut to turn around.

    Keep the Faith.
