Morals and hypocrisy, McCoist nails it, then asks you to bend over

1156

Do you remember the early days of Celtic Quick News when one wit suggested this was a blog for accountants?  Our early years did a great deal to bring a wider understanding of accounts and finance to Celtic fans – which was a good thing.

Today your fan of Scottish football needs to know about more than the game and amortisation, a semester or two in law school is an enormous advantage.  We touch on legal matters here but last night I enjoyed reading the forensic analysis on the wonderful Duff and Phelps on the Web 3D Law blog.  It’s worth 10 minutes of your day, each day, the most recent blog especially.  I also assume you are all keeping an eye on the substantial thoughts on Paul McConville’s blog.  If not, I want to know why.

So much for accounts and the law, today I want to discuss philosophy with you.

When football-types talk about morality and hypocrisy they are usually worth listening to, if only for comedic value.  Anyone experiencing the Scottish media will not doubt that morality is subjective and chameleon in nature.  This question has exercised great minds for centuries, if only they had the benefit of our effervescent radio luminaries.
Despite being metaphorically surrounded by morally opportunistic hypocrites, Ally McCoist felt so secure in his demands for Rangers that he didn’t dodge the issue yesterday.

When asked if Rangers should be kicked out of the SPL he accepted it “might be the right thing to do morally and people will have their own opinions on it, with differences far and varied.

“There’s an argument the right thing to do is for Rangers to go down to the Third Division and that might be the case if it’s a Newco after liquidation.

“But is it the correct thing to do for Scottish football?  Probably not. Everybody’s got a dilemma and that’s why there are so many opinions on it.

“Whether people like it or not, Rangers and Celtic are different because of the size and magnitude of the two clubs.

“Supporters of other clubs and some Old Firm supporters say you can’t have rules for some clubs and not for others.

“In an ideal world, that would be 100 per cent correct. I would absolutely and totally agree with that.

“But the fact of the matter is we’re asking if it would be good for the rest of the SPL if Rangers went down to the Third Division? The answer has to be no.

“I don’t envy the people who have to make that decision. I can understand the hypocrisy of it but Rangers and Celtic are different.”

Rangers are different – no dispute about that, Ally.  Celtic are different again, but if it is hypocritical and morally wrong to provide support for these clubs which has never been extended to a smaller club, we cannot subvert our sport – and remember, the word SPORT implies that outcomes are determined on a level playing field – Rangers must be treated no differently than Gretna.

And just one correction for Ally: liquidation-and-phoenix would not see Rangers drop to the Third Division.  A Newco in the Third Division would not have dropped from anywhere, it would be a new company and new football team.  Rangers would, in these circumstances, go pop!

There’s only one team in Glasgow.
One team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.

*excluding, juniors, youths, lower leagues, amateurs and Celtic Ladies.

Pop!  And they’re gone!

  1. Offski now, quite a few beers tonight but still feeling quite fresh. Up early tomorrow, a few early beers in the house, Celtic and Rebs on and a cargo for the bus.

Hail Hail and everyone take care.

Tomorrow we will be watching history at celtic park and my prediction for the result is…Celtic 2 history 0

This is the first match in a long time where I think the biggest mistake that can be made is putting out a side that is over physical.

We need a dynamic set up that can move the ball about the park.

We need hooper to pull his socks up and press the full backs so they haven’t got the time to pick out elbows with long balls.

I find the whole 12 month transfer embargo/ McCoist rant fascinating…..

As for the media- it’s becoming cringeworthy to watch the put the boot in to RFC in an attempt to distance themselves from accusations of succulent lamb journalism.

    —————–

Mate, with 2 exceptions, I think the media havent changed. There isn’t a huge amount of clog going in. 2 condemnation pieces that I can recall, but the usual suspects are lined up behind the “this punishment I way too harsh” bandwagon. I think we will see much more of this.

A really honest and clearly heart felt post but I can’t agree.

Yes at this present moment I’m sitting in my living room like a small child on Christmas Eve but tomorrow as I walk up the stairs to my seat and I look at them in the opposite end those feelings will change.

I’ll see ahead of me flags of oppression and banners of hate. I won’t see faces, they’re too far away, but I know they’ll be contorted in anger which will be directed towards me and everyone in green.

That will bing out feelings within me that I don’t wish to have. If I never experience it again it will be a blessing.

  6. See,it does not matter if you come on here as a relative unknown, post sumfin’,and don’t get a reply. If that’s what you want, get a Fakebook account. For a lot of us who are mostly expats, then it’s one of the best ways of keeping in touch with our club’s community and to voice our thoughts about stuff that,to be honest, most other people couldn’t care less about;but we do,and that’s what matters on this blog. I know, actually know, only one or two people on here, but I feel a kindred spirit with everybody else because we are all Tims & we all despise the hun. That’ll do for me.

So,in that spirit, I’ll repeat myself from earlier yesterday :

“There are only two sure things in life;death and taxes.”

    Sometimes they are simultaneous.

    Stupid huns.

There,I’ve got it off my chest. Happy as. See you all ra morra after we’ve gubbed them for the last time. HH!

Actually,I had a great day in Dukenfield following a prety horrendous evening in Manchester.

I eventually got poured onto a train to Euston, which was a bit of luck since I stayed in London at the time.

You make a good point about not needing to know anyone we are all part of Celtic

  15. hamiltontim i am from the same town but in emeralds isle now. I know what ur saying but i cant see where u will replace the atmosphere, noise, two tribes going toe to toe. I am just being honest, whose result am i going to look for after ours, who am i going to hope will lose when we,re not playing. We are here to keep our club,s traditions and culture alive. Like barcelona we are more than a football team we hold the hopes of a diaspora around the world to beat the establishment team. When rangers cease to exist then i think we become poorer by its demise. Not maybe a popular statement, maybe ive become cosseted being in dublin not having to face hostility at work or in society in scotland. But no other game except top european nights will fill that void. Hail hail be safe tomorrow.

    Stringer….

I have witnessed several over the last few days. Jabba was actually trying to convince himself at one point today he has always advocated 3rd Division, Glen Gibbons piece was magic, Speirs going along moral high ground.. Even heard Keevins talking sense at one point…

I honestly believe they are deserting the sinking ship and are also displaying signs of the ‘ Hawthorne effect’- they now know real journos are watching them and they are trying to perform better.

Most ironic thing I’ve heard was Traynor earlier today going on about how Alistair Johnstone and co warned Rangers fans and SFA about our hero Craig Whyte but neither of them wanted to listen… No mention of the media’s deaf ears…he really is a ‘sell out’. I remember in the mid 80’s when he wrote for the Herald… He used to be a proper journalist but as sacrificed all integrity on the alter of self promotion – he is doomed to a retirement of material wealth and impoverished principles…pitiful.

I’ll fess up now,I rarely appreciated Bobby when he played-ffs,I was only three in 67-but I knew enough even then to realise there was something wrong with the team when he was visiting a health farm,as he was wont to do.

You are priveleged to have had such close acquaintance with a man who I only really appreciated when he wasn’t there.

  20. One wish tomorrow that we put them to the sword and destroy them! My mum used to tell me that they kicked my dad up and down the field every game when he played against them. They cheated back then and with the help of the referees nothing has changed and this is our chance to pay them back big time!! C’mon you bhoys in green!!!

Hear what your saying, but have only seen Lexie undergo a true damascan transformation

The rest – I feel – are only pulling back and entrenching behind a realistic fall back position. The talking heads on shortbread in particular, have been a disgrace. No condemnation of comical ally, only understanding and forgiveness

Coming into your winter time now, do you get a winter there ?

Getting hotter here by the day, hit 33 yesterday, down to 26 today and rain which we will have for the next few weeks, tis the early rainy season, touchwood it’s been good so far, no mudslides.

The club have a dilema, to spend or not, I would push the boat out to ensure CL qualification, now is the hard part, how much will it cost to ensure that, that is the 64k dollar question.

Looks like FF is gone, so we need a keeper, Fojut has a knee problem, so we need a CH, we also need a playmaker, and most importantly we need a quality stroker.

That all costs serious money that PL will be reluctant to part with.

I will just have to hope that John Park has done the biz and has come up with the answers.

To be honest with you,I have never yet met a single poster from this site.

My Dad and my two sisters read it-and give me pelters-and I have e-mail addresses of four lads, though even then the e-mails are only an extension of the inconsequential pash that is the norm on here.

    From me,at least!

I think it’s a brilliant way to find out what other Celtic fans think, with possibly a chance to influence the way that others think.

It’s also an education, cos I’m not always right.
