LISBON LION Jim Craig is the very special guest on the new CQN Podcast – out now!

Jim releases his new book, Right Back to 67, The Lisbon Lion Diary next week and we are pretty confident that this will be regarded as one of the classic Celtic books of all time.

There has been so much written about 1967 in some very fine books to-date but nothing like this. Jim kept a diary of his time at Celtic and in Right Back to 67 he is able to provide the authentic, inside story. It really is too good to miss.

You can order the book now from CQNBookstore.com and you will receive a signed copy. You can also add a personal dedication which is ideal for a Christmas gift. Simply email david@cqnpublishing.co.uk with your dedication after you have ordered and Jim will sort this for you next week.

Jim Craig joined Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham to discuss the Lisbon Lions’ 50th anniversary celebrations in a year which also saw Celtic winning an invincible treble, a prestigious award from FIFA naming their fans as the best in the world, and even a BAFTA!

In this emotional interview, Jim reminisces about Jock Stein, Billy McNeill, Neilly Mochan, Bertie Auld, Tommy Gemmell, Joe McBride and George Connelly.

He also discusses his latest book, his magnificent Lisbon Lion Diary: Right Back to ’67. This memoir is a real fly-on-the-wall recollection of events from 50 years ago, brought to life by Jim Craig’s intelligent and humorous brand of storytelling. Order HERE.

  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    We did our job today.

From the kick off at 3pm when four or five Motherwell players lined up on their left hand side of the halw way line for the ball to launched as far as pssible up or right wing , it confirmed what we expected would be their game plan. It was like a tactic some rugby teams use at kick off.

I was in the sevco end today, what an utterly crap view of the pitch , really poor. Fair play to the Motherwell ans who stood by their team today . Its unfortunate the non regular attenders at Fir Park who were at Hampden today , dont seem to realise their team wont improve unless they physically and financially support them.

Willie Miler on shortbread really is a breath of fresh air with his sensible and knowledgable comments as well as showing the other pundits up as being useless.

I dont understand defenders who give an attacking player an invite to hitting the deck which was exactly what happened today.

From what I have seen of the tug on Scott , Kipre must have thought I’ll get away with this but thankfully Thomson made the right call . When the media are in overdrive about today’s penalty , as others have posted , we need to emphasise what Collum told Jonny Hayes after Efe’s pull back of Scott at Celtic Park.

Today has set us up nicely for our next three games then the biggest game of them against Anderlecht .

Thank you Celtic for making my son’s 18th birthday today even more special.

The Huns should appoint Motherwell’s Robinson. He’d strike more of a threat than most. He organised well. He is by all accounts a take no sh*t character. Good on the training ground.

He impresses me given his relative lack of experience…he’s also probably within their budget.

  4. Happy tonight.

Got a ticket too and watched The Celtic win a trophy.

Penalty ? After watching the “honest mistakes” over the years I’m prepared to accept this was a mistake.

  5. Pog,

Glad you enjoyed the game in Elgin. Lovely part of the country, as I know very well. Many congratulations on “pushing the button ” at last, and welcome to the club. Get yersel a hoose in Tayside- much easier to get to Paradise. HH

  6. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

When Moussa was booked , the opposition player was rolling about as though in agony. When the ref booked Moussa , the player he fouled , got up then walked in the direction of our penalty area without limping.

A few seasons ago when Stokesy was sent off after giving a well deserved clattering to that wee runt Lasley , Lasley was rolling about then when the red card came out, Lasley jumped up , no sign of injury then lined up to take the free kick.

A Celtic fan on facebook had put up footage of Jamie Walker’s and Schalk’s dives last season noting there was no outrage similar to that aimed in Scott’s direction from other clubs’ fans and the media.

The first half was poor stuff to watch. We came out the traps in the second half and quickly killed the game however the most enjoyable part of the game was when Paddy Roberts came on. The boy is an absolute joy to watch.

  9. Great result today. Well done Brendan and The Bhoys.

Was it a pen? Of course it was – because the referee said so.

Do the huns not like that? Why should I care.

    These things even themselves out…

  10. It’s not just the Huns who are hurting.

From the newspaper that spawned Jabba

But the next time around Thomson was all too quick to point to the spot.

A shocking decision by the whistler awarded a penalty to Celtic after Scott Sinclair went down far too easily after he was touched on the shoulder by Kipre.

To make matters worse the referee sent off Kipre and Dembele stepped up to make it 2-0 and kill the game.

But for Motherwell’s first League Cup final in 12 years to be ruined by a referee is something which will sting Steelmen hearts for a while.

G’day Melbourne Mick, ya ould rebel.

Have to share a Wee Hauf to celebrate yesterdays great win.

  12. There was minimal contact? Its like saying “he was marginally offside”

Are you saying he was onside?’well no,but he was just a wee bit offside. So he was feqqing offside.

Does “Contact” have to be GBH before it’s rated as contact? No. Then it’s a penalty

A great result for all the Celtic family and I think even KevJ praised Celtic or maybe I read it wrong;-))

    The Onlooker

“Terry Butcher is a token panelist. He knows very little about football tactics or often even less about the laws of the game.”

Totally agree. TB seems to be there only to be a counterpart to Sutton. More intent on (not so) smart remarks rather than expert analysis. Always harking back to the way it used to be. “A tackle like that would get you a contract extension” for example. A dinosaur of a pundit.

  14. Good morning CQN from a cool, wet and windy East Devon.

Good result yesterday, believe Blondie was sent off because Thompson realised he should have been sent off for the tackle on Moussa.

    Onwards and upwards.

  15. 50 shades of green on

It was a penalty all day long, as for the red card if you think it was harsh then your not up to date with the rules.

Will be interesting to see how they get on if they Appeal the red card decision or not. I thought it was the only decision Thompson got right yesterday.

H.H part 4 in the bag hopefully 5 and 6 to follow.

Is our game on the tv mid-week, or are they just going to allow Mwell carte Blanche on our players, knowing most of it will never be highlighted????

  17. Morning Tims

I’d suggest smiling all day today. These are good times to support our club and should never be taken for granted.

    About yesterday??

James Forrest – take your bow! Again this season has responded brilliantly to the Paddy challenge. Has developed a bravery and directness to go with his undoubted ability. Best man on the park, smashing goal too.

Broony – strolled it again. First half we didn’t dominate as normal, but Broony broke things up, kept the calm head. Brilliant in the 2nd half. Peerless as a midfielder in thes country.

The penalty – well I’ve seen no replays, but…..we were about 15 rows in, directly in line in the North Stand. Pulled at the shoulder, contact…..penalty, not a doubt in my mind. Sending off is probably harsh, but I think the rules are that any deliberate attempt to stop a goalscoring opportunity in the box is red.

Honourable mention to Craig Gordon, that was some save form Moult.

Looking forward to Wednesday, it’ll be a bit of a game. Let’s be more clinical!

    Erskinetim (smiling)

  18. Morning all

Well I will start of by reiterating that I do not think we should have got a penalty yesterday and around me the expectation was that Sinclair would have been carded for diving.

I can remember us getting a few breaks in finals over the years- Lou Macari handling the ball in the build up to Dixie’s legendary goal v Hibs in 72, Big Roy stealing a shy in 89 and big Majstorovic handling the ball v Motherwell in 2011. Not many – and fewer than have gone against us by the likes of Davidson, Gordon, and Syme- but yesterday we got a break that was more decisive than the other mistakes by a ref who had a shocker typical of his career. We should be magnanumous enough to accept that.

Main thing is though that we won and I think would have won if Thomson had not intervened. Not a great performance by the team but professional and always in control. Good to see Craig Gordon make some fine saves- he had a poor game in Paris- so a bit of character shown. Wee Paddy looked excellent though tough to drop James Forrest who has been unusually consistent of late.

Odd we are playing Motherwell on Wednesday which seems an insane bit of scheduling. Meanwhile Thistle will go a fortnight without a game.

Big 35 days for Celtic – 9 games that will go a long way to determining how good this season will be viewed overall. All about results- something we are good at getting.

  19. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

It’s good to be a Tim. New Celtic top nicely christened yesterday, wee trophy bagged, huns crying their eyes out.

    What’s not to like?

Still, back to normality now. Monday Club.

  20. Good though James undoubtedly was yesterday, I would start with Paddy on Wednesday. I would also play Ralston or Gamboa ( I only use first names for regulars :-) ). Maybe Ajers height would help combat Moult`s aerial ability.

    So, my team for Wednesday:

    Gordon

    Ralston Ajer Boyata Tierney

    Roberts Brown Ntcham McGregor Hayes

    Griffiths

Rogic Armstong and Sinclair for McGregor, Brown and Hayes if the occasion allows/demands.

    JJ

PS I really do not expect Brendan to select that eleven :-)

  21. Definitely a penalty yesterday. Sending off may have been a bit harsh but thems the rules as they say.

Media outrage is typical anti Celtic bias. Where was their outrage when Walker and Schalk blatantly dived to win penalties against us, one of which influences the result?

We would still have won the game regardless.

Well done Celtic and a special mention to wee Jamesie, outstanding son!

  22. If the MSSM really were unbiased ( Hah !!) , they would be giving equal column inches to the bad foul on Moussa.

    JJ

  23. Went to see Monaco-PSG last night. PSG won 2-1, but even my Monaco supporting friend next to me said that a fairer result would have been 5 or 6. PSG missed a barrow-load of opportunities, and only occasionally had to step up into 3rd gear. Monaco remember, were second in Ligue 1 before yesterday, but they were not at the races.

PSG will score lots of goals this year, and the Celtic results may eventually not be seen as so extreme. PSG’s only limitation last night was a sense of entitlement – they always knew that they were so much better than Monaco, and so they never had to push the game.

  24. Congratulations Celtic! What an achievement by Brendan Rodgers.

I can’t believe we’ve won back to back League Cups – our bogey competition!

As for Motherwell, commiserations…but Karma is one cold b!tch. This is a team that should have finished the Semi Final with 9 men and shouldn’t have made it through 15 mins of the first half of the Final with 11 men on the pitch.

They are thugs and they will kick us off the park on Wednesday night…but we’ll still win :)

  25. “I’d rather have got pumped six, seven-nil by them …..,” Robinson said.

I sincerely hope we oblige in one of the next two meetings ;_)

    JJ

  26. Re penalty… its either a foul or not a foul… the fact that SS went down too easy,

does not cancel out the orginal foul..IF SS had stayed on his feet and CT did not give a penalty how many would have said he should have went down?
