LISBON LION Jim Craig is the very special guest on the new CQN Podcast – out now!

Jim releases his new book, Right Back to 67, The Lisbon Lion Diary next week and we are pretty confident that this will be regarded as one of the classic Celtic books of all time.

There has been so much written about 1967 in some very fine books to-date but nothing like this. Jim kept a diary of his time at Celtic and in Right Back to 67 he is able to provide the authentic, inside story. It really is too good to miss.

You can order the book now from CQNBookstore.com and you will receive a signed copy. You can also add a personal dedication which is ideal for a Christmas gift. Simply email david@cqnpublishing.co.uk with your dedication after you have ordered and Jim will sort this for you next week.

Jim Craig joined Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham to discuss the Lisbon Lions’ 50th anniversary celebrations in a year which also saw Celtic winning an invincible treble, a prestigious award from FIFA naming their fans as the best in the world, and even a BAFTA!

In this emotional interview, Jim reminisces about Jock Stein, Billy McNeill, Neilly Mochan, Bertie Auld, Tommy Gemmell, Joe McBride and George Connelly.

He also discusses his latest book, his magnificent Lisbon Lion Diary: Right Back to ’67. This memoir is a real fly-on-the-wall recollection of events from 50 years ago, brought to life by Jim Craig’s intelligent and humorous brand of storytelling. Order HERE.

Great game virtually ruined by a strutting prima donna in black.

    Again.

Thomson needs to be told that his role is not game management,it is to referee.

According to the laws, fairly and equitably.

Five yards away from a leg-breaker,no free kick. Why’s that? Too early in the match, didn’t want to ruin the spectacle? Get a grip and do your job right, you might not like the decisions that you are forced to make, but you’re paid plenty to make them.

In that game , there were at least half a dozen fouls given for pulling back , all justified as fouls , why the difference in the motherwell box .

*Correct, right after Craigies wonder save we break away and there’s a yellow for McHugh for a pull back.

  3. Fine win for Celtic and elation for the supporters that were magnificent in their backing of the team, who didn’t need to get into top gear.

James Forrest showing why Paddy Roberts will have to wait for his chance to make the starting line up as BR kept the faith, and was repaid when the wide man made the breakthrough with a subtle finish .

The cup was en route to ‘The Walfrid’ the minute the ball hit the net and whilst the penalty was soft, contrary to SMSM it was no ‘turning point’ merely a detail.Craig Thomson’s penalty award wasn’t questioned when Efe Ambrose on the same spot made this new phrase ‘minimal contact’ against Inverness Caley.

Motherwell are arguably the second best side in the country at the moment but Lustig ,Simunovic, and Boyata were solid and rarely troubled, and therein lay the Motherwell flaw, as soon as we’d broken them down.

Embramike – Was it a penalty and sending off under the rules.

Sinclair was moving at speed when he was tugged on his left arm and he crumpled. Thought it was a soft penalty.

! was amazed when the red card was produced as Sinclair was not moving directly towards goal so no obvious goal scoring opportunity .

There was a slight delay by referee before blowing the whistle. He must have decided to give penalty but not sure whether a red card or not. A yellow would ahead been enough I think . If he had tackled Sinclair clumsily, under new interpretation, he would only have received a yellow card.

So a poor refereeing decision in our favour at Hampden ? About our turn I suggest !

  5. Couple of things annoyed me today.Actually maybe I,m an old fart but the trophy turning up today with red white and blue ribbons on it (even though Celtic are the holders)And at the end of the game presented with so many Betfred ribbons on it that you can hardly see the trophy.

    Anyone else annoyed about this?

    In my day ……….

  6. Craig Thomson has shown consistency in this matter. The Scott Sinclair penalty incident has similarities to a Ross County Game at Hampden where he awarded a penalty against Celtic and sent off Efe when there was less contact and far more drama (Alex Schalke?). I don’t recall any outrage at that time on Efe’s behalf.

Which teams would benefit most if Thomson were not to referee another game?

Congrats to an imperious Scott Brown and his team.

    Decent red to celebrate HH!

It’s really unfortunate we are playing them again on Wednesday and at their patch. They will feel more than a little aggrieved.

Think Brendan will have to pick his team carefully. I’d leave Sinclair out, and start Paddy and Griff to give them a different challenge. Referee for Wednesday night is Willie Collum. Happy if our run is still ongoing after that game.

we were also friends with his sister who passed away a few monthe back.

her x husband was a great guy(raners man) john forgey ha passed away a good ten years ago.

when we started the mississauga celtic club he was the entertainment director my bigouldnt mate

couldnt get his head wrapped around that, but he liked the celtic club a lot better than the other.

  10. Seems to me more emphasis on the sponsor than the team or competition now.

I suppose that is a sign of the times.

Glad we won anyway hun media etc will be livid.

  11. After the Chris Henrik program I’ve switched over to watch post match studio show of Huddersfield Man City game.

Panelists unanimous that a pull back on Sterling in the box was a penalty.

Contrast with the BT panel at Hampden.

  12. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

    Not a penalty for me.

I thought Sinclair was poor until the pen. Then he came right in to.it.

My disappointment is that we would have won without the diving.

It’s below Celtic standard and took shine off a wee bit.

    Delighted that our record continues.

  13. BBC Stats from their game report

    Possession for us 69%

    Shots 21 to 7

    On target 8 to 3

    Corners 7-0

The only stat Mothwell won was the fouls 13 to 9

So we dominated every aspect of the game.

  14. Just back from Elgin, listening to Shortbread in the car. Willie Miller brilliant (again) put English in his place regarding the penalty issue. I’ve got to say Willie Miller shows former Celtic player pundits in a bad light with his often insightful and unbiased views.

Best two pundits for me are Willie and Micheal Stewart, neither with a Celtic connection.

Four In A Row Invincibles. 65 and counting. All hail Brendan the history maker.

  15. there was no dive he was fouled inside 18 yard box a penalty. There are no ‘ degrees of contact’ ( except in a Masonic lodge!) Either it’s a foul or not; it was a foul therfore a penalty.

My son pointed out to me that the Bet Fred shop at Parkhead has ditched those colours and is painted green.

  17. It does not have to be James or Paddy – play them both ! Sincy needs s rest or play Paddy at 10.

  18. Yesssssssssssssssss.

First trophy of the season and the first leg of an historic double treble in the bag.

They can moan all they want it only exposes their black hearts.

Motherwell were never going to win that game and had no intention of even trying to score a goal until we were one up.

They should’ve been down to nine men before Forrest stuck it in the pokey.

The early tackle on Dembele was a studs up leg breaker and a straight red.

They also got away with another studs up lunge on Dembele.

An outrageous barge on our captain.

A late challenge on Lustig that should’ve been at least a second yellow.

The only thing that ruined the game was a Motherwell team from a bygone age when intentionally injuring opponents was an acceptable tactic.

    Was it a penalty?

    Was there was contact?

    Was it accidental?

I saw a Motherwell player grab for/pull Sinclair back as he went past him in the box. Why did he grab/pull Sinclair with his hands if it wasn’t to foul him. Soft maybe but UEFA are very clear these days about pulling back players. Don’t do it as it’s to be punished.

The red card is a consequence of the change to the ‘last man’ or ‘goal scoring opportunity’ rule. The rule now is that an honest attempt to play the ball in the box is no longer an automatic red card and conversely a foul in the box with no attempt to play the ball is a mandatory red.

FIFA and UEFA are quite clear on this.

  19. The dinner is ready so I will be away for a wee while.

    Not a penalty for me.

    ——————————————————————————————————

My first impression was that it was a clear penalty as Sinclair got the blind side of Kipre who try to impede his run by tugging him just enough to disrupt his stride pattern. Granted it looks less obvious in slo-mo but it’s Sinclair’s speed that that this critical factor here. If you are defender up against a forward who is going by you at pace, you risk giving away a penalty if you make any physical contact and don’t get the ball first. The question of whether there’s enough contact is academic as Sinclair’s at full pelt and any contact is going to knock you off your balance. Outside the box, it’s a free-kick and no controversy. Kipre’s lying if he said he made no contact – he clearly did.

Having said it was a penalty, it wasn’t a red card as the foul did not deny Sinclair a clear goal scoring opportunity. Unless of course the rules have been changed.

  22. Auldheid,

I could believe what I was hearing when the Motherwell manager said he’s watched it again and there was no contact.

This one has the potential to become the new free kick away to st mirren.
