LISBON LION Jim Craig is the very special guest on the new CQN Podcast – out now!

Jim releases his new book, Right Back to 67, The Lisbon Lion Diary next week and we are pretty confident that this will be regarded as one of the classic Celtic books of all time.

There has been so much written about 1967 in some very fine books to-date but nothing like this. Jim kept a diary of his time at Celtic and in Right Back to 67 he is able to provide the authentic, inside story. It really is too good to miss.

You can order the book now from CQNBookstore.com and you will receive a signed copy. You can also add a personal dedication which is ideal for a Christmas gift. Simply email david@cqnpublishing.co.uk with your dedication after you have ordered and Jim will sort this for you next week.

Jim Craig joined Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham to discuss the Lisbon Lions’ 50th anniversary celebrations in a year which also saw Celtic winning an invincible treble, a prestigious award from FIFA naming their fans as the best in the world, and even a BAFTA!

In this emotional interview, Jim reminisces about Jock Stein, Billy McNeill, Neilly Mochan, Bertie Auld, Tommy Gemmell, Joe McBride and George Connelly.

He also discusses his latest book, his magnificent Lisbon Lion Diary: Right Back to ’67. This memoir is a real fly-on-the-wall recollection of events from 50 years ago, brought to life by Jim Craig’s intelligent and humorous brand of storytelling. Order HERE.

  1. Just wondering where Danso & a few of our new Posters who took a huge interest in the PSG game are tonight.

Re the Penalty all I can say if we were at the end of that decision plus red card I would be spitting nails.

I’m just relieved to have another trophy on our record books and suddenly the anguish of last Wed. doesn’t seem that bad.

Think the game in Fir Park will not be for the faint hearted but am looking forward to it with relish.

65 & counting, we absolutely must make it to 67.

For the avoidance of any doubt can we agree it was not a penalty. Hh

    *naw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Diving or even just going to ground easily is something that just wasn’t part of the game for many of us growing up…..certainly the older generation at least?

Unfortunately diving is a blight on the game nowadays and i wish the culprits could be punished, however 1 thing that has crossed the generations is the right of the defensive player to…..erm……do whatever they can to put the offensive player off by any means possible, whether its a wee shove/tug/kick to put him off balance/disrupt his poise and so i have always thought the going to ground easily thing was in a way a justifiable action and counteractive measure to deliver some karma to defenders!

Sincy has made a great run and Kipre knew fine well Sincy was getting in behind him for a chance used the ole put him off trick……unfortunately for him and incredibly for us he was punished for it.

Id say harshly for the red but he should have got it earlier for his leg breaker on Moussa……feared the worst for him after it and was so relieved to see him eventually get back up.

    As for Sincy’s form……..

……..so much being done to contain him but as a result it will be restricting our opponents and should be creating a bit more room for others…….like Forrest……..to exploit?

Well played again Celtic, another fun afternoon at Hampden. How prepared are we to continue?

Defcon5. 65 domestic games unbeaten and counting – brill!

Defcon4. fourth game in twelve days – done that plenty.

Defcon3. Fir Park – tricky, no denying it.

Defcon2. Willie Collum is the ref – gulp?

Defcon1. No live television pictures – Emergency, nuclear war is imminent. Maximum readiness required.

Let’s face it. One of the first things we think about when winning a trophy is how the Hun are taking it, and to be fair it’s vice versa.

Howeve, use any cliche or metaphor you like now…salt in the wound…punch drunk..etc..

There are few words to describe how the self inflicted self entitled mob are feeling tonight.

    They’re in a place we’ve never been.

  6. Re the penalty….. If you watch one of those nature programmes where there’s a cheetah chasing a gazelle at full tilt, it flicks ever so slightly one of the back legs of the gazelle who obviously doesn’t want to go down as it’s curtains, but more often than not they do go down. It takes the merest of touches at pace to unbalance a player, the motherwell player knew exactly what he was doing, that’s why he did it. All this mock outrage sickens me.

Well done Celtic and especially James Forrest another brilliant performane HH

I never thought about the huns once today, you don’t really think like that?

  8. oh…….and while very interested to see how Moult performed against us……it was gobsmackin why he wasn’t booked for that challenge on Broony!

  9. i'vehadtochangemyname on

BT/Chris Sutton factor key in sending off imho

ref goes in at half time – sees he’s missed a career changing type tackle and sends off in light of md incident in first half

  10. Seems to be at least some on here accusing Sinclair of diving.

Re the incident of which we speak:

    If you SEE something, then it happened;

If you DO NOT SEE something, that does not mean it did not happen.

    jj

  11. THE hUDDLE:

” I never thought about the huns once today,”

You did after reading Marrakesh`s post :-)

    JJ

  12. I never had a good view of the goal or the penalty during the game and have just seen a video clip for both.

Excellent goal and a definite penalty. Sinclair is running at pace and the guy tugs him.

Glad to hear that one of our most experienced refs, Willie Miller, agrees.

We weren’t brilliant today but were in total control. Next two games should see us utilise our strength in depth.

I’m hopeful that Brendan brings in a centre back and someone who can play CB and right back also, during the January window.

  13. To all those bleating about how disappointing it is that the ref made such a controversial decision to influence the outcome of the game.

The fault lies with the player who decided to tug SS, not the most massive tug I have seen over the years and I’ve seen many a tug not penalised (even during the same game). However, he did give SS a wee tug, just enough to inhibit his progress (but not enough to cause him to lose the power in his legs – of that I do agree with the critics). It is deemed a ‘soft’ penalty, certainly in comparison with the waist high assault v Sevco which wasn’t given, but it was a penalty nonetheless.

The fault does not lie with the referee. Surprise? Yes. Fault, no.

The red card was therefore merited as this was a professional foul in an clear goal scoring opportunity situation.

If there is fault to be given to the referee it is to be applied to the fact that this player was not red carded in the first half. That was an awful challenge and could easily have resulted in a broken leg.

Every Sevconian in the country will complain about how soft the penalty was. Had it been at the other end…. those very same critics would have been crying penalty all day long.

Had to laugh at the Sevconian who posted that he couldn’t give a ‘F’ over who won the cup. Aye! Right! You were screaming for Motherwell to win.

  14. Craig Gordon has won the League Cup three times with Celtic, on each occassion he was an ever present in the competition and he’s only conceded in one game, this season’s semi final with Hibernian. 12 games, 11 clean sheets.

  15. I won’t be losing any sleep nor do I feel any sense of embarrassment about our second goal today. Sinclair was impeded by the Motherwell player who clearly puts his arm on Scott with the intention of giving him a tug. Who knows how light or heavy the tug was. He also denied Scott a scoring opportunity. Red Card! He should have got it earlier for his shocking tackle on Moussa but didn’t. I agree that the Ref probably saw his error at half time and had kittens. He was making sure that he didn’t make the same mistake twice with the same player.

Oh, a wee note to the hand wringers ……… do you remember the Ross County game last Saturday when Calum was about to put the ball in the net but had his standing foot kicked away from him? No penalty, no red card and almost a lost two points for Celtic but for Leigh’s brilliant free kick goal. Shed no tears.

  16. What is the Stars on

Our goalkeeper is a hun who is going through the motions (notice how he never once goes forward for a corner now that he plays FOR Celtic)

Our centre backs are incompetent bumblers

    Our captain is a thug

    Our forwards are divers

A pub team could go 65 games unbeaten in Scotland and not make a big deal about it.

Most of the above “Facts “are available in various media outlets including CQN .

Oh and almost 18 months after taking over the Celtic manager has still to appoint a team scapegoat.

    Sack the Board

  17. TTR,

I have been a critic of Craig, that Save today was out of this World.

Watching all the youtubes (HampDump) is such a crap viewing experience.

I think we can now do a Double Invincible. FFS that would be Monuuuumental.

  18. For the avoidance of doubt can we agree that it was a very soft hardly even a penalty. There was barely any contact however according to the rules of the game it was a stonewall pen and by denying a clear goal scoring opportunity a straight red card. Absolute nonsense by folk who have never played football. Hh

  19. the griff can get halfed in two with a tackle from behind, at waist height, in the box, one leg out to shoot,

    but thats not a penalty.

that german word, what is it ?

    snood a freiud

  20. The Onlooker

Terry Butcher is a token panelist. He knows very little about football tactics or often even less about the laws of the game.

He & McCoist are rent-a-quote seat fillers. In no other country is football openly spoken of as a contact sport.

McCoist’s comments before & during the Sevco defeat in Dundee showed why he was & still is a wretched manager/coach.

The game is primarliy one of skill, tactics, movement & fitness. While contact is inevitable, the evolvement of the rules of the game make it abundantly clear that that part of the game is being eased out. The contribution of TV panelists & pundits in Scotland & frequentlly in England, reflects just who & what these people are: dinosaurs who used to play & who think that what was good in their day is still relevant today.

They struggle to embrace change: getting confused over the offside rule changes, moaning about tackles being regulated out of the game & whinging about it being a man’s game. The reality is that the Scottish Womens Cup Final today was arguably a better game than the “mens” game played at Hampden.

As for skill, the inconsistency of refereeing decisions AND the lack of accountability & transparency about how to reduce that makes sure that skill players in Scotland cannot depend on being protected. That means that they will stop playing with as much skill or change or move. Skill is not valued in Scotland. Getting it up them & winning tackles are valued more than skill – and that’s why we have that sort of national team.

    HH

  21. Just a few thoughts on the game. At the kickoff Motherwell overloaded on our right hand side ,seemed to me the intention was to target Lustig, perhaps sensing an injury, it didn’t work and Mikael went on to have a good game. Thought we did ok first half but it didn’t happen for Moussa and Sinky.

Second half we started well , much quicker movement and no surprise when we scored. The penalty and sending off is one of those things that happens many times over a season and for a change it was Celtic that benefitted.

Bottom line is we were going to win anyway, gives the media a chance to to detract from our victory and call for revenge in the next two games.

Well done to Brendan and the Bhoys and also to the fans for creating a good atmosphere in that awful stadium showing that we haven’t tired of winning.

  22. Cheats, cheats, cheats, cheats, cheats……

Who’s the fenian in the black ?….

    Nahhhhhh,…….

SS, whit did ye go doon fur ?

Ah mean, that was a Lafferty penalty!

Ah know that Efe got sent aff in similar circumstances but, its hun law, we have to be seen in a different light, we’ve got a history of examples of, mibbery, chicanery, collusion, corruption, and downright twisted evil slanted agenda’s being driven against us by, the Thompson’s of this backwater full of pub teams. But, we dont defeat thum, by being like thum. SS, every time you hit the deck from here on in, you’ll be carded. What good is that ?

I’ve been noticing how off the boil you have been this season and, I thought that, when big Moussa is fully fit, that’ll help you back to yer best again, and that is a best that has shades of Larsson about it, your discipline will be severely tested now, guid luck. But now, you’ll be, rightly, labelled a cheating diver. If the penalty was at the other end and was given, which is usually the case, we would all, rightly, be effffin pissed off. The bloke who tugged you should have been sent off for his tackle on Moussa, and then, Moussa turns into a mug and lunged at sumdy else, and he should have been off as well, sumdy in the chain of command at Lennox town{called after Cellic’s greatest ever player, imo} isny or, is incapable of spreading the cuteness imo.

Craig Gordon, some guid saves the day, but, ye still played like wan ae thaim in disguise on Wednesday night imo, although, maybe it looked as if ye chucked it because, there was hardly any protection in front of you, because Brendan was trying to imprint his vanity philosophy against the PSG galactico’s, as he does ? Put it this wye, if NFL was in oor dugoot in Paris, we’d have a 0-0 to brag aboot, while the rest would’ve moaned aboot anti football, tough! I accept that you, CG, are not a hun going through the motions and, I’m glad that that post was deleted, sorry Paul 67.

I also apologize to any readers who were carted off in an ambulance after reading that post, so sorry.

Thank you James Forrest for that goal today, some of us, who always knew that you had it, are well chuffed for you tonight son, enjoy.

Brendan, thank you son, keep it lit.

    Hope yer keeping well amigo, hope ye enjoyed the day ;

Tell wee Maureen that her flag still fly’s high on thee oul Jungle roof, HH

    ……oot.

  23. It’s amazing the wee things that get on your nerves.

I enjoyed today but I kept harking back to the handling off the game by the Hampden men.

That DJ before the kick off who played wall to wall headbanging metal music that soundedlike some of the worst of the efforts produced by non-entity bands like Poison, Saxon, or Venom. It was enough to deafen a Leopard, turn Judas into a priest, tie your own slipknot and turn a shade of deep purple on this black sabbath.

But then the game started and everything improved……………

Until the half time DJ started

  24. Just home , a tad inebriated but hey ho .

Positives . The support , the brilliant , varied song book..

The performance from James ( the scapegoat , coward or Hun , apply the CQN adjective ) Forrest . He was immense today . I love James Forrest . Kieran Tierney & Brendan Rodgers being the last to leave the arena after mixing with fans. They love Celtic.

Negatives . Craig Thompson , the game management poor excuse of a referee , who from what I hear , seemingly gifted Celtic the game . Bollox.

Why did so many fans leave before the trophy presentation or the lap of honour ?

In 1997 we celebrated a league cup final victory like it was a European cup . Please never become complacent or feel entitled , that’s hunish.

Handsome sleep required . We live in a special time . Soak it up. HH

  25. I recall being absolutely livid at a penalty decision against us in Turin. There was indeed contact but in no way was it a penalty. It was in MONs words a ‘Shocking’ decision. Hh

  26. SANDMAN DEFINITIVE RATINGS:

“Whit? I thought he’d reitred?” Confused contributer.

“No, he posted after PSG but some fanny mod with no sense of humour got offended about comedy searies and deleted the absolute gospel that the Sandman favours us with.” In-the-know Joe.

“I agree – the mods are pathetic miserable fannies occasionally.” A.N.Other. Avid CQNer

    “Lookout, INCOMINGGGGGG!!!!!….”

Big Craig: Total authority – no heed to ill-informed detractors as the resurrected redeemer pulls off a truly world-class stop at 1-0 to kill their hope. Tht’s what he’s there for – and that’s what he does; and it’s a whole lot more difficult to get the one crucial save right than being peppered by the best players in the world for ninety unbalanced minutes. 8.5/10

Mad Mick: Rampaging, defying injury, arseing-up almost every final ball; was not alone in a first-half defined by how poor our final-third execution was after quality build-up. Still, he’s mental, got a hot wife, and he’s ours. 7/10

KT: See above. Suffering from infectuous anxiety that permeated every killer pass opportunity. Still, the kid’s a winner, and he’s a better Tim than 99% that ever wore the Hoops. And he’s consistently brilliant. 7.5/10

Jozo – Quiet. That’s because he’s GOOD. and you don’t notice how subtle his positioning and marshalling is. Well worth 10 mill when he keeps fit. Which is around 3.88 game sper season… 8/10

Dedryck – Helped enormously by Jozo’s presence; looks more confident in every aspect – intercepting, committing, stepping forward with the ball; that security might get him to the world cup; If we can maintain a partnership. For all the armchair Directors of Football: please note that the first-choice Celtic defence played today – kept a clean sheet. When at the top of their game – FULLY fit – they belie the ‘experts’ – Anderlecht being a prime example. Paris wa sa game too early. Keep Jozo fit, we’ll make that Europa place.

Broon – Ever-reliable. Metronomic force of will in that middle. Keeps the team mindset on track, forces the Celtic meme on the opposition; they crumble under the id. Stoic and irrepresible as ever; it’s a big occassion and Broony’s turned into a big Celtic captain to fit the role. 9/10

McGregor – The un-put-in-a-box-able Callum will not sit on his moderately-girthed erse and accept the erroneous Sandman-‘opinion’ of season prior- a pish, unqualified (although the ONLY one) verdict on one of Deila’s revenants who has since – BRILLIANTLY, and uniquely… – proved the Sandman a f###ing gobshite; the changes in his game – one pertinent and very simple physical habit that has been essential is his positioning when receiving a pass from behind: he’s now instinctively half-turned to the opposition goal – sometihng Zinedine Zidane mastered in; notoriously difficult to execut eproperly because of the need to be brave and have total awareness; much easier to receive with your back to goal and sheilding than to gamble on your instinctive ken of the players around you; but the wee mhan does it, and doe sit now superbly, enablin ghim to be a major creative factor between our mid and front-line. Keep going, Callum, and f### that Sandman 2016 idiot… 8/10

Armstrong – GREAT hair. But headles schicken for majorit yof his game today; one of those off-timing matchers for Stretch as he hustled and sprung, and strode but mostly to no effect; his whole game relies on the runs being timed correctly and linking well, but it wasn’t coming off for him today and I’m surprised he lasted beyond an hour. 6.5/10

Forrest – The Prestwick Pele blitzed the detractors again with a frenzied, intense performance, perpetual motion rewarded with a SUPERBLY-TAKEN goal on his weaker foot. Keeps coming good when it counts, does former (BETTER BE) whipping-bhoy Jamsie, proving himself well-worthy of the starting jersey. 8.5/10

Sincy – Winter Is Coming. The Whitewalker on Celtic’s wing is thawing. Season’s never kicked-in for the flash yet but those magic feet – they will NOT be contained for long. Testament to the team we’re setting records despite Sincy’s indifferent form, but he’s tick-ticking there and the bomb will go off soon – 30th December might be the greatest explosion you’ve ever seen as a true class act gets his act together. So dangerous Chuck Norris sweats when he sees his name on a teamsheet. Today, full of endeavour but a nearly-man. 7/10

Moussa – A volatile unit, built like a decommissioned Soviet tank, sparks into life and shows moments of true top-class ability, but right now we’re never quite sure when it’s coming. Outrageous career-ending tackle on him after 10 minutes by the Motherwell Dembele/Sinclair tribute animal. Got booked for a retaliatory scythe minutes later and i feared the worse. Bu the got composure, sorted his head and took his pen well. Like Sincy, he’s going to blow full-throttlesoon; the Huns must be in therapy if they’re paying attention. 7.5/10

Sparky – Tried everything he could to score, ersed up everything that was possible. Yet he’s there, always, never a doubt he’ll make an impact. 8/10

Paddy – Back. Looking hungry. Dangerous, deceptive and lethyal; another on the burner soon to fire up. Can’t wait. 8/10

BR – Maintained his composure and set up to possess and dismantle; no attention paid to Murderwell’s declarations of thuggery, which were evident in some of the treatment. No swithering at half-time 0-0. Play football, he says; and Celtic did, relentlessly, and football won. 9/10

Referee – Ha, ha, ha. Watched Moussa’s career nearly end on 10 minutes and did f###-all. Forced himself into making the soft-but-stonewall penalty call and sending off the goon – resignation writ large on the CHEAT’s (I’ve not forgotten Hampden 2014) face. As it will be on all their bitter masonic countenances when the TEN hits.

OVERALL – We were set up to be knocked off the 65 perch today; they failed. Relentless, is this Celtic side, fearless and indefatigable; PSG can wallow in their opulent filth and fakery – we have a team built on honest enthusiasm for the win, who appear to thrive after adversity and maintain a hunger to learn and improve no matter the magnitude of the occassional setback. Truly a Celtic team to be reckoned with and in this day and age of financially-doped rigged football a squad that can still evoke that basic fervour in the chest of veteran Tims. 8.5/10

    Treble Rating: 1/3.
