Mourinho and pleasures delayed

442

For those who like their pleasure delayed, there is something wholesome in the wider awakening to the traits and abilities of Jose Mourinho.  The Portuguese inherited a squad at Porto in 2002 that would achieve great things there and elsewhere, notably against Celtic in Seville a year later, then against Monaco in 2004, but Mourinho’s principle contribution to results was his indulgence in the game’s dark arts.

Later in his career he would achieve while out-spending competitors, or by ‘parking the bus’ while still outspending most.  His temperament has always had a question mark over it.  Never has he won a league after his second at a club, by then, the impression of brilliance has always unravelled.

He made a barbed comment aimed broadly in the direction of Brendan Rodgers last week, although the Celtic manager was not mentioned, before picking on his own squad this week.  All will serve to divert attention from the fact that his spending is eye-watering and comparable to anywhere, but he will never get close to Manchester City.

Seems that the MSM are doing their “Level” best to get Steve Clarke to Sevco.

Steve Clarke strikes me as being a very clear-minded, purposeful person who I don’t think would be particularly impressed by a MSM campaign to get him to Ibrox.

He doesn’t have an ego, so there would be no flattery at being linked with the mighty Rainjurz.

He is also highly intelligent and would see right through the RRM MSM campaign.

He will probably have several (better) opportunities in the English Championship, but I wouldn’t expect him to jump ship in the short term.

    “interesting wee tale ” .

    Indeed .

Different versions / accounts of the story have Bunny Wailer being the man who “cursed ” Leslie Kong .. .

The Jamaican choons industry was full of sharks .Eg .- The Wailers ( including Bob Marley ) earned the grand total of £99 for everything they did for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One ./ The Wailers did stuff for Lee Perry which sold well in the UK.. They didn’t see a penny — Perry had sold the rights to Trojan Records.

  7. He’s an absolute rotter as an individual but as a manager (he’s a manager first and foremost) you can’t argue with his achievements.

I remember the cl semi when inter beat Barca, over the two legs it was a tactical masterclass. I enjoyed watching Barcelona but their self satisfaction and the universal assumption that this was the “right way” to play football was beginning to grind my gears. Mourinho proved there are many ways of winning a game of football. He didn’t park the bus either

BMCUW went to school wi Steve Clarke in Ardrossan. SC would be an unlikely Sevco manager. Doubt they would employ a West of Scotland Catholic as manager.

Delaney’s , I was messing about on YouTube last night and saw stuff uploaded by a Celtic supporter called Irvine Bhoy. It’s all our goals from televised highlights from 1981 to about 1987. There is some great stuff on it. It brought back a lot of great memories of how good Paul McStay , Tommy Burns , Murdo McLeod , Frank McGarvey , George McLuskey and C Nicholas were.

  11. The time wasting tactics of Porto were a factor in the Seville defeat .

I would say the venue in the the south of Spain was what really counted against us.

If the final had been a bit further north I think we would have been too strong for Mourinos team.

Its was sooo hot and that suited the Portuguese with their Brazilian players.

In spite of the conditions we weren’t out-played and I felt we were going to prevail till Bobo got his red.

Other excuses include O’Neil never signing a top keeper. John Hartson getting injured when he was in the best form of his life. An unmatched fit Sutton coming in . A young referee who allowed Porto to cheat. Like others on here I have I never watched a rerun of the final but in spite of not lifting the cup Seville was still an amazing experience.

Ditto – I do remember Henrik hanging in the air and bulleting in his second with a God-like header though – that is the single best display from a Celtic player in one match that I have ever seen.

BBC Mandates affecting Scotland and elsewhere

A couple of weeks back I was in the company of a BBC journalist whom most of us will have have knowledge of.

I won’t give their name but they are not based (biased?) in Scotland.

Ahead of the Glasgow derby the discussion got onto just what on earth is going on with the blue team and in particular the non-stop off-field pantomime.

We discussed the SDM years, the newcos Sevco Scotland and Sevco England, the new Charles Green club’s first match at Brechin, sans the non tupeing players, the “purchase’ of history, the constant hemorrhaging of everybody else’s money, etc.

I was told that the BBC mandate to its journalists is clear….

… Treat the club as the full Rangers and do not to step out of line nor to dig too deep with stories that might offend the blue club supporters.

When I made the point that if we can’t trust our publicly owned BBC to get simple facts about the demise and rise of a football entity called Rangers right then why should we believe a word they write or broadcast about stuff like Putin or the war in Syria or politics or Brexit.

My new BBC friend shrugged shoulders and said that that was exactly what the journalists who cared enough said at the time when the mandate was made but there was no future at the BBC for anyone who stepped out of line.

I thought of Jim Spence and concurred.

Drumchapel’s greatest son Daniel Fergus McGrain was the best Celtic player from that era. World class player. Him and Bobby Murdoch and Henrik Larsson are the only 3 world class players that Celtic have had in my lifetime. My mammy thinks her Uncle Jimmy Delaney was our best ever. Think she is biased. ;))

There will come a point where “stopping the 10” over-rides backgrounds. Think this is more of a ST push as he is clearly the hot ticket in Scotland right now. Would certainly have had him for Scotland – miles ahead of the serial failure McLeish.

Don’t think SC will be distracted in the way DM was.

  23. I watched the Seville game a couple of times.

What struck me was that after Henrik’s 2nd equaliser, there was hardly a shot on goal until their 3rd in the second period of ET.

Both sides were cancelling each other out.

Had Bobo stayed on – he can’t complain about the red card – my guess is that it would have gone to penalties and all that entails.

  24. I have no personal knowledge of Steve Clarke.

He has shown himself to be a coach capable of making Lee McCulloch’s strangers into a cohesive and effective football team without spending money.

He obviously fits the bill for the Sevco and mssm agenda.

While people point to his upbringing as a reason he would not take the job there are many factors to why he would.

Being consistent the mssm would elevate his status as they have done with previous coaches way beyond the actual reality.

The refereeing and mssm would provide him with an asset and weapon to facilitate his success.

This could lead to more lucrative offers in the future and would also provide him with a higher wage than he has presently.

There are many positives for him to take the huns job if they still exist next season so would not be surprised if he took it.

Also i’m not convinced the Killie hierarchy would put any barriers in the way of him joining their favourite team.
