Mulgrew’s magnificent delivery

1279

I watched Scotland play a more accomplished Wales last night.  No one in blue played particularly well but when Charlie Mulgrew prepared to take a corner from the right in first half stoppage time we knew Wales were in danger.

The pace, low trajectory and movement Charlie gets on the ball negates the natural advantage the defending team has.  The goal had little to do with the young lad who got on the end of the cross, just as Celtic’s remarkable success from corners has little to do with their ability to attack the ball.

The Wee Oscar 4 Life team have asked me to pass on this message:

Wee Oscar 4 Life are delighted to be offering you the chance to win a fantastic and very unique auction prize.

We have been donated a very special bottle of 8 year old Bowmore, which has come straight from the cask. The Whisky is 59.4%, unlike a normal malt whisky which is cut to 40% proof.

The whisky was distilled on 13 March 2001, and bottled on 26 June 2009.  It has been donated by a very kind CQNer. However, not content with already donating 3 bottles from his share of the cask to raise funds for Wee Oscar , we now have his prized possession:

Bottle no 1 of 251.  A very special prize in aid of a very special wee bhoy.

Silly boy and its a shame as cant see many other potential employers viewing favourably. Hope the club gave him some form of support to help with losing his contract

Don’t wish to get into politics ,too heavy for me,but IMO sectarianism in Scotland ,at present,is as bad ,if not worse, than it has ever been.

  4. Meanwhile, away from Scottish politics (kind of) the talk of the steamie is the mysterious “Charlotte 18” account alluded to by Stuart Cosgrove last week on shortbread.

Seems to be a directorless offshore account set up by one Gavin Masterton and owned by one David Murray.

One of the deals facilitated was allegedly Murray buying 75% of Masterton’s 94% share in DAFC thereby owning two clubs at the same time.

Looks like exactly the type of story one of our esteemed journos would be all over like a rash….

Bank set to write off its £12m loan to ex-chief

By Andrew Picken, Scottish Political Editor

THE taxpayer-backed bank at the centre of a row over a £12 million loan to its former managing director is to write off much of the debt.

Bosses at Bank of Scotland, part of the Lloyds Banking Group, have effectively given up on getting back the money lent to a company wholly owned by Dunfermline Athletic supremo Gavin Masterton.

Details of the £12.2 million debt -secured against the Fife club’s East End Park stadium – show the 71-year-old’s company does not have to make a repayment on the debt until 2043.

But with Mr Masterton’s business empire in financial chaos and the loan not repayable until he turns 101, it is understood bosses at the Edinburgh-based bank do not think they will get all of the money back.

The loan’s payment holiday is contingent on Mr Masterton owning Dunfermline, but this week will see the club either liquidated or put into administration unless its debts are settled.

Alex Salmond has held talks with Mr Masterton over the plight of Dunfermline, which has to pay a £134,000 tax bill by tomorrow. The First Minister met Mr Masterton and phoned HMRC about the issue in January.

Critics last night hit out at the pros¬pect of Lloyds – 43 per cent owned by the taxpayer – wiping out any of the debt, particularly given that it has already written off a £4 million loan to another firm set up by Mr Masterton.

Eben Wilson, of TaxpayerScotland, said: This sort of scandal deserves immediate attention by the bank and the authorities.

‘Too often, taxpayers have seen the burden of toxic loans land on their backs.’

It is understood bosses at Lloyds have classified the £12.2 million loan to Mr Masterton’s East End Park Limited as ‘impaired’ – an accountancy term for a debt ‘unlikely to be repaid in full’.

It is expected the bank will try to get some of its money back via a new rental deal for the stadium once the fate of the football club is finalised.

A spokesman for Lloyds Banking Group said: ‘We do not comment on individual customers.’

A spokesman for Mr Masterton said: ‘Any matters pertaining to the financial matters of DAFC are confidential and any comment would not be appropriate, particularly at this juncture.’

    …………………………………………

Comment: I hope we don’t have to pay him his £250,000 pa pension till he is 101 as well!

  9. I found this wonderful analogy in the Scotsman comments om the Sevco game yesterday, It is by

Garrynamonie and I thought it worth reproducing:-

“Derek was one of Scotland’s top golfers. From his base in the south west of Glasgow he had built up a huge following and they liked him to be seen as Dignified Derek but the reality was somewhat different. Whilst Derek had won many Scottish titles he had resorted to shameful ploys in his quest to match the stunning achievements of his big city rival, Paddy McGinty, who had won the open in the 60’s.

Bullying and cheating became the norm for Derek as he found ways to control the Authorities and the Press. But that was not enough and as his quest became more desperate he resorted to fraud, tax evasion, and all sorts of contractual arrangements that were banned. When Tax Authorities and Police realised what he was doing Derek lied and withheld information and destroyed much of the evidence using shredders.

Throughout his career Derek was a dreadful bigot and racist and the decent people of Scotland were dismayed as he was recognised as a permanent embarrassment and occasional disgrace.

The pressure of all the lying, cheating, tax evasion, and deception became too much for him and Derek died in June 2012.

From his deathbed Derek passed his golf club membership to a rough, gruff English fantasist who changed his name to take on his identity. He was to be known as The Dignified Derek and he – bizarrely – he claimed he actually was Derek and it soon became clear he had also taken so many of Derek’s shameful behaviours.

But he was no golfer. Despite the rhetoric and bravado The Dignified Derek struggled to win matches against golfers in the lower echelons on the Scottish club game and suffered humiliating losses v farmers, teachers, and plumbers.

He says he cannot understand why people laugh at him.”

  15. Long post alert!

The huns have pulled it off IMHO. Aye, that’s right; the scammers have scammed the prize.

We are kidding ourselves on re Sevco this and ‘deid club’ that. ‘The’ Rangers are still the huns……….Drip feed all day long. Drip, drip, drip, debt free, sound financial footing, for the good of the game, part of the fabric of Scottish society, will provide a strong challenge, need their co-efficient, etc., etc., etc.,

    Examples……………….

Take Strongbow and their blurb about how brilliant it is to have Rangers promoting the brand; see the company press release.

Take Charlatan Green and his ‘worst team in Rangers history’, no, not the last nine months or so…..Any of this questioned by the decision makers, sporting, legal, governmental, financial, or whatever?

They are still playing the same game with the same M.O. at their spiritual (sic) home, in the same colours, in front of the same support, etc., etc., etc.,

Related or unrelated below……..not sure but……….

I was back home for a wee break; full of good intentions – to see my beloved Celtic, visit a few friends and relatives, hook up with a couple of CQN contributors, invite to a CSC gathering on the cards, and a birthday bash all on the ‘bucket list’…..

Then a good pal and fellow Tim suggested going to the Algarve for a few days’ golf and chill time, even given that we had secured tickets for Dingwall… Says me, “Aye, sure. Not that bothered about a highland gathering anyway.”

Arrived at the apartment in time to watch the second half v Ross County in a real good Tim pub in Portugal……Great company therein; insipid performance from the Tic…..

Anyways, back to Glasgow early hours Friday morning in plenty of time for the Aberdeen game the following day. So I stayed with my Ma for a couple of days. “You not going to the match son” She had a pre St., Patrick’s do at the chapel……..”Maybe later Ma”……

I never went, couldn’t really be bothered.

Next day, I’m driven down to LHR, (greatly appreciated my friend). Overnight stop, and a 10,000 km (total) flight(s) back, followed by a three hour taxi ride to the house to be greeted by Broony (the mental dog) yelping, jumping and spinning like I had been away for a year or more, and my other half welcoming me with “you look tired, hey, I see Sammi (her favourite) scored the winner on Saturday…….How was the game?”

Incredulity does not really cover the response to my answer…………….

If any of the interested parties are reading this nonsense, apologies to those that I never got to see or meet with as discussed /indicated prior to flying back…………

    Will email individually soonest.

Still trying to make sense of this personal malaise…………

  16. The nature of any bigotry amongst rank and file SNP supporters, as amongst Scots people generally, is obviously quite a complex one.

The Scotsman highlights 3 statistics from a comprehensive survey of SNP supporters by Professor James Mitchell of Strathclyde University.

52.7% of SNP members felt that Scotland should remain in NATO and only 22.9% agreed with the party policy to withdraw.

57% of the membership felt there was no place for a monarchy in a modern democracy which is against the party policy to maintain the monarch as Head of State.

However, less encouraging is the finding that 64.4% think that Catholic schools should be phased out, which is also not official SNP policy.

As an aside, the survey also revealed that the average SNP supporter is 63 years’ old, donates £84 a year to his party, and whenever he hears someone criticise his country, takes it as a personal insult.

Now back to the football, what time is the Young Team game at CP today against Killie?

  17. Big Nan ,

  22. Initially I had no problem with Alec Salmond and his proposals although I wondered how things would deteriorate if he was not there.

Since then rumoured helping hands to Sevco via HMRC, plus the question, was influence exerted to avoid social unrest applied to soften recent punishments, and of course the ridiculous knee jerk reaction Bill forced through by Christine Grahame,(remind me of her affiliations) ,and my initial leanings are now looking shakey.

If I then add to that the finding that 64% consider Catholic Schools should be phased out, then I think I have a fair idea of future direction.

The main advances in equalities legislation occur at National level, not local councils, who merely enforce existing legislation. The main advances in equalities legislation were the following Acts:-

Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regs 2003

Sex Discrimination Act 1975, amended by the Sex Discrimination (Election Candidates) Act 2002

All of these were introduced and passed by Labour administrations with the exception of the DDA in 1995 (John Major’s lot) and the 1928 Act (passed by Baldwin between the first 2 periods ever of Labour Government in 1924 (9 months) and 1929-31.

I would expect you would get more than 5,000 members of bowling clubs and golf clubs in the West of Scotland who would go along with that idea.

The policy will not be changed Salmond knows he cannot do it. To suggest that Scotland is now reverting to a Calvinist state of anti Catholic policies is to ignore the progress Catholics have made across senior positions in government, legislation and the civil service.

Sorry to let you know but the days of “what school did you go to” are consigned to history. Sure we will see bitterness still come into play, the stance of Ulster Orangemen has shown how out of touch that “no surrender” mentality has in the real world. That disosaur thinking has brought them nothing, nothing at all in terms of progress or respect for their stance.

I am afraid that a lot of Scots in all parties (I think the Green Party may even have it as formal policy) believe that ending “separate” schools will improve the sectarian picture.

Of course, in all cases, it is the RC schools that they intend to remove because it is the RCs who are being blamed for the separateness.
