My only flag’s a Celtic flag

492

I get that football thrives where it is a manifestation of tribalism. Across Europe and beyond club flags offer people more affinity with than any national emblem.

But, with one or two exceptions, it’s a largely innocuous brand. We get to wear tribal garb and indulge in our rituals without onerous economic consequence. The echo from the Great Recession, which we are still hearing today, has been a lesson in what can happen when a tribe perceives that its relative position has diminished.

That perception often bears absolutely no relation to reality, but widespread economic illiteracy makes us look like a primitive animals.

My only flag’s a Celtic flag.  You are my only tribe.

It is sooooooo obvious that you are not idiotic or gullible.

The only gullible people is the people who didn’t see this coming.

The same people who only accept democracy if the result suits. The same people who would have the well educated career politicians speaking down to and not with the ordinary working people, The same people claim to hate the establishment, but are actually part of it.

The same people who dismiss the genuine fears of ordinary working people , which claiming to represent them. The same people who dismiss the principles of ordinary people as uneducated, daft and worthless.

No my friend you are not gullible , but I do recognise gullible on here at times.

Many of us also really value your contributions during the live updates. For those of us who cannot watch every game, they are invaluable.

Anyone who believes Trump is an honest and sincere individual is gullible.

Anyone who thinks he has a rational, coherent political strategy is gullible.

Anyone who believed his campaign ‘promises’ is gullible.

The one thing he will do though is cut taxes for the rich.

I said before the elections and I repeat afterwards, Donald Trump’s motivation to seek the nomination and the Presidency is very similar to Dave King’s.

While Rangers went bankrupt only once, so far, Donald has bankrupted 6 companies as a “successful” businessman alongside having an EBT like tax exemption for many years because his company had made a massive loss.

Yet this is the man who is going to make America great again- and the only firm policy he has to do this, and he has provided no details as to how to implement these policies, is to promise to “re-negotiate” trade deals (and to save a bit of money by reducing foreign military activities).

Well it will take more than to to tango over the first promise and he will be more than half way through his first and only term of office before he makes any headway on this with even one other country (who will want to agree to trade talks when he has declared his hand that he wants more favourable terms for his side and less favourable terms for the side agreeing to negotiate?).

And as for his second promise, if he ever meant it, he will need good luck going up against the Complex which makes money out of these foreign adventures. Even a switch from reducing troops on ground and increasing bombing ordnance will not be allowed to save a lot. These guys have sucked more from the teat of US taxpayers than any “Obamacare” Health Insurance policy ever has.

Donald is there for the same reasons that most rich guys enter politics i.e. to defend his own riches and those of his pals who will fund him to do so.

I have no difficulty in accepting your motivation on the single issue of Abortion policy, though I did disagree with you on the official position of the US Catholic Church which, on its own website, urged Catholic voters to take all issues and policies into account, and were quite rugged on the issue of taking a rounded approach. Without reference to Trump, I think they are aware of the dangers of backing an anti-abortion candidate whose other policies are pernicious and hateful and contrary to church teaching too.

Where I think the charge of gullibility sticks is in believing that a thin-skinned rich man who never held a political office can deliver or ever intended to deliver on the make America Great rhetoric. Whenever he spelled out a policy detail, “we are going to build a wall and Mexico will pay for it” it was quite patently rubbish. It was the equivalent of Dave King ( & Charlie) telling their gullibles that he was going to make Rangers great again whilst he was dipping their pockets and trying to get HIS money back.

I fear you are in for disappointment and I cannot see Donald lasting the whole 4 years. He will quit as soon as he sees that he is not delivering on any of his promises, except the easy one of returning Health Care to the even more unaffordable Health Insurance spivs who had it before. He will blame every one else for failing to allow him to deliver. And, in that regard, it will look very similar to Dave King’s parting statements when he exits his rescue plan to make Dave King Rich again, erm Rangers Great again.

All those blue collar workers who trust a Wall Street Insider (that’s what Trump is- he just pulled the same rhetorical trick as Junior Bush, who was a good ol boy from Texas, an outsider rather than a scion of a Washington Central Family Dynasty) to improve their lot by making health care less affordable for many, or by providing tax cuts for the wealthy at the cost of cuts to public services, are being led astray by empty rhetoric, I am afraid.

And while he may add a few restrictions on abortion or prevent any roll back on existing policy, you can bet your bottom dollar that his own private ethics on any unfortunate outcome from his own extra-marital adventures will not be affected by these moral restrictions.

Many on the right, and at Ibrox, long for a big strong man to come along and do all the right things on their behalf. That default position leaves them exploitable.

There is no Superman, there is just The Wizard of Oz.

P.S. As usual, none of the above is an endorsement of Hilary

    Fatuous response.

It’s perfectly possible to understand why people voted Trump, be aware of their alienation and disaffection, yet still regard them as gullible.

Not all of them of course, there will be those who are just plain nasty and mean. Like the KKK and the neo nazis.

  11. Ernie,
