My only flag’s a Celtic flag

492

I get that football thrives where it is a manifestation of tribalism. Across Europe and beyond club flags offer people more affinity with than any national emblem.

But, with one or two exceptions, it’s a largely innocuous brand. We get to wear tribal garb and indulge in our rituals without onerous economic consequence. The echo from the Great Recession, which we are still hearing today, has been a lesson in what can happen when a tribe perceives that its relative position has diminished.

That perception often bears absolutely no relation to reality, but widespread economic illiteracy makes us look like a primitive animals.

My only flag’s a Celtic flag.  You are my only tribe.

Sorry about the vulgar language. It was not my intention to cause offence to anyone, least of all a Trump apologist. I realise how uncomfortable you must be with the use of coarse, industrial, dare I say it, locker room language.

Would Pudenda Caresser In Chief be acceptable?

Wow, mad confusion indeed, but not for me. It reeks of establishment and entitlement and enough has been spouted about that recently.

  6. For all I am a socialist, I find it quite incredible that I wanted Trump to win over HRC, maybes it’s cos the worst they could hold against him was his use of industrial sexist words, all the accusations of sexual assault were debunked.

HRC and her husband were-are, murderers, drug runners, liars, thief’s, tax evaders, rapists, racists, etc, etc, yet we have so many defending them to the hilt, says more imo about them than those whom they are defending.

I was delighted to see that Barton has been acknowledged for his particular, perhaps unique way of committing himself to his team and has been awarded the Ladbrokes’ Premiership Player of the Month Award. He has been singled out for his “laid-back style of play”.

The lady that brought the civil case against Trump for raping her when she was 13 dropped it because of threats and intimidation against her and her family.

That being the case, that puts him right in the same place as the Clintons.

My hope is that once in place some of his advisers will reign in his wilder ideas, and that generally speaking he’ll be no more politically worse than any other president (I’m aware there have been terrible decisions, but not loon ball level like bans in Muslims etc).

My big fear, is that much like Brexit you’ll see the right and far-right emboldened, Except it’s the US and there’s guns in play. That more than anything is what scares me about his victory.

or has it only become poor since you never got the result you wanted

    ###

The impression here and elsewhere was that Trump had won by a substantial margin, a landslide, and the discussion about what was happening in America, that there was some huge, seismic shift in the political landscape was predicated on that basis.

I have merely pointed out that Clinton has, it seems, gained more votes than Trump, and that the electoral college system has obscured that fact.

That doesn’t amount to challenging or disputing the result.

I’ll leave it those who feel inclined to do to justify the electoral college system. I can’t see the point of it.

The other point that is relevant is that the turnout was low, at just over 50%. Although that’s normal for the US, it doesn’t suggest a huge pent up demand for change.

The overall impression I have is a nation that has lost its way, whose political system has become so corrupt and dumbed down that these were the two best candidates it could produce.

Really important story that could affect all transfer dealings going forward. (Bear in mind we recieved a cut of the Wanyama deal)

Benfica signed Lindelof from a small Swedish side for a fee of 60,000 euros. The understanding was that after 10 starts there would be a 250,000 add-on.

Benfica believe that the agreement is void because Lindelof signed a new deal with them in 2015. Not only that, the Swedish side would miss out on their cut of a future transfer fee (Benfica were on the verge of selling him for MILLIONS to the EPL)

Benfica are reptiles. Some of the highest forms of hunnery on show. Shameful.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

Just read on the twitter thingy; that if you stuck a fiver on Britain voting to leave the EU, Leicester to win the league and the Donald to become president you would have got back the not so unsubstantial sum of £15 million big ones.

Have we ever witnessed such seismic upsets ?

    The Electoral College System .

One of the significant factors in the creation of the system was establishment worry that the voter might not have the necessary intelligence .. Direct democracy -mmm -bit dangerous- On that point -on one occasion some Electoral College delegates managed to vote for a dead candidate.

  24. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Greenpinata,

you would have got back about 500000 as that is many bookies limit on payouts, at least that was the last time I looked at terms and conditions, hopefully they have been made change that to honour their bets but somehow I doubt it.

  25. ERNIE LYNCH on 10TH NOVEMBER 2016 11:43 AM

I got sidetracked by work, before I could respond to your earlier comment.

I think it’s partly just a practicalities issue of counting up to 232M votes. With states still counting even now, I doubt we’d have a final result for days – especially with it being as close as it is. Which, you could argue, is fair enough.

I think it’s much quicker to say “Right HC has got 50.1% of the vote in California, so she’s won there. California has 20% of the population, so that’s 20 votes for her” [numbers for illustration only]

  26. Ernie I largely agree with what you are saying and electoral systems do tend to have anomalies.

Where I part company is in the seismic shift. That trump could be electable given his stance on many matters and that, by and large, his voters where towards the working class is remarkable (I don’t mean its praiseworthy by the way – Trump is a disaster for us and them)

It does clearly have echoes of brexit – where again, by and large, the working class voted to brexit.

For me what this signals is that left wing politics and politicians have failed the poor and marginalised and certainly in the UK left wing parties have disintegrated. So the poor and marginalised have turned to the extreme right.

That has happened before – and we all know what comes next.

Incidentally what do we do with polling agencies and firms now? Given that they are now regularly being lied to are they any use?

Numbers are wrong though, so you’ve destroyed your argument.

The electoral college was maybe a pragmatic solution when it was introduced.

But it simply can’t be justified in the electronic age.
