My only flag’s a Celtic flag

492

I get that football thrives where it is a manifestation of tribalism. Across Europe and beyond club flags offer people more affinity with than any national emblem.

But, with one or two exceptions, it’s a largely innocuous brand. We get to wear tribal garb and indulge in our rituals without onerous economic consequence. The echo from the Great Recession, which we are still hearing today, has been a lesson in what can happen when a tribe perceives that its relative position has diminished.

That perception often bears absolutely no relation to reality, but widespread economic illiteracy makes us look like a primitive animals.

My only flag’s a Celtic flag.  You are my only tribe.

No you are wrong. I would only support those who acted in accordance with the Catholic Church and its teachings and or defence.

That means Franco and not the others.

  4. I see the idiot Hun blogger in the Rectum is today telling us that the Huns will play their “Winning card”,in the Joey debacle.”His love of football will see him leave in January to sign for someone else,so GIRFUY,all you internet bampots”

He forgets to mention that in Joeys 6 months with the Huns he will have taken around 1 million quid !!!!!!!.

His signing on fee,his wages, and his pay off.All for 8 games.

The electoral college system in the US doesn’t, to my eyes, look particularly democratic.

I can’t claim to understand why it exists, but it seems at least in part to be something to do with slavery.

What is clear though is that it’s an (big word alert) anachronism.

Why can’t the presidency not now be decided on a one person one vote basis?

I believe there was a bi partisan (that maybe should have had a big word alert) attempt in 1970 to change things but various vested interests ensured it came to nothing.

  6. Big Peat of Islay, I'm a Monarchist who wears a Poppy in Remembrance on

Ernie, you wouldn’t have said a word if the baby-killer would have won mate. Let’s move on and accept that the winner won fairly and that’s that.

    Poor argument, very predictable.

Who is to judge if any choice, in any country is not similar to 1933 with similar outcome few years later? CQN? The journalists? elites? USA was democratic choice.

I’m pretty sure the Russians think they are on good side when bombing Aleppo, Americans thought they were on good side when killing people in Iraq.

I think you’ll find that a lot of Catholics supported Mussolini, Salazar, Mosley and Hitler for the same reasons you support Trump and Franco.

At the time, of course, at the time.

You would have supported them too. If only to save the Catholic Church from being attacked by Jewish, Bolshevik, Atheist scum.

Meanwhile, here in the UK, which some claim to be the ‘mother of all parliaments’, a government can be elected with a full majority of MPs (and thereby claim to have ‘a clear mandate’) on a share of the popular vote of only around 37%.

Surprised that someone as erudite as you first learned of it on a football blog.

The trouble with it is that when people are discussing the rise of a right wing, populist, demagogue through the democratic process it distorts the issue if no one is allowed to mention Hitler.

Though I can understand why that would suit some people.

  16. ERNIE LYNCH on 10TH NOVEMBER 2016 9:48 AM

The electoral college system is a reflection of population density and the issue of an election for a single person divided up into States. If each State was accorded one vote, I doubt we’d ever see a Democrat as president.

In some ways we’re about to partially adopt the same thing when the boundaries are redrawn to reflect population. This will concentrate seats in the populous areas, particularly the SE. That will generally favour one party over the others. Guess which one.

  18. Great Result for the Development team last evening.

It was good to see the mix of the team… the development bhoys being enhanced by good, hungry, first team members needing and more importantly wanting game time.

Also a few of the loan bhoys coming back for these, in my mind, important fixtures was great.

Quite a contrast to last year when we basically played our U19’s.

    Well done all involved…

Haven’t been keeping up with CQN so much recently but it can be somewhat brutal when politics are to the fore.

    I’m agnostic about Politic/s/ians today…

Never voted in the EU Referendum and if I had been forced to, would have voted remain… but was very glad Brexit won. Only as a wake up call for the electorate.

    Likewise I’m glad Trump won…

Sure people are distressed that he did, but you know, if Hillary had won people would have been less distressed and they shouldn’t have been.

To be fair to Trump, I don’t think he is. He doesn’t mean most of the crap he came out with during the election. He just said it because he thought that it would play well with a section of the electorate. And he was right, they were daft/naive/lazy enough to fall for it.

The wall for instance. We’re now being told that it was a metaphor (now that IS a big word) and there isn’t going to be an actual wall. I’m sure his voters will understand.
