New contracts for some but not all

181

Matt O’Riley had recently turned 21 when he joined Celtic from MK Dons in January 2022.  He was an immediate success, before form shaded a tad, in particular when Ange Postecoglou varied midfield combinations.

This season he has started all five competitive games, with performances eclipsing anything seen before.  He is still young with plenty of improvement potential, so it’s no surprise Celtic have opened talks to extend his contract beyond its current 2026 date.

With Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda and Kyogo all in receipt of recent contract renewals, and negotiations underway with Matt and Reo Hatate, it’s clear the club have decided wage levels needed to rise to head-off disruption.

All good and well but there’s one noticeable absence from these names.  Concerns about his fitness will exist until we hear the club have offered a new deal to the big guy.

I’m guessing that Tom did better at comprehension at school than you.

    Let me try help out..

“…..no surprise that Celtic have ‘opened’ talks (with Matt)…..”

    “and negotiations ‘underway’ with Matt……”

  2. Restrictions of movement, why is it only football fans targeted? Ask businesses in Kilmarnock and Hamilton etc, how much they lost when relegated from SPL,totally unworkable nonsense, it’s from Westminster, hopefully Holyrood can knock it on the head.

Celtic FC are closely monitoring the proposed new rules for fans travelling to matches on public hire vehicles, which have been issued by the Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain.

Why is anyone concerned about this guff ?. VOLUNTARY.

Police Scotland don’t have a good record of applying laws or recommendations in an even handed way do they? Why football supporters? Get absolutely hammered in your seat at a rugby match no problem, have a bottle of beer on a football supporters bus, everyone out, seats, supporters and luggage hold searched.

I am more than a bit concerned about the need to introduce “dedicated football officers” to Scotland….

Don’t we have enough of them already?

Quite surprised by Celtic Travel’s ‘Sorry, too difficult’ stance on travel to Rotterdam for the upcoming Feyenoord Game. I get that there is an event on that means hotel rooms are scarce, HOWEVER:

    – The Hague is really not very far from Rotterdam at all. Being The Netherlands’ Capital and also its Premier (Scheveningen) Beach Resort means that there are plenty of Hotels, restaurants and night life. The sea front has loads of restaurants, though I’m not sure when these close for the season.

    – The Netherlands’ Rail Transport infrastructure is fantastic, much better than the UK. Rail Transport from The Hague to Amsterdam Airport is really easy and excellent. I am sure there is really good rail and bus travel from Rotterdam to The Hague also.

I feel there is a fantastic opportunity here for Celtic travel, Celtic Supporter’s Associations and the Tourism Offices in the Hague to transfer the ‘Post-Match-Party’ from Rotterdam to The Hague… Over to you Celtic Supporter’s Associations, Celtic Travel and the Tourism Officials of The Hague in the Netherlands…

    Yours in Celtic,

  7. A couple of comments on yesterday’s and today’s blog.

    1. If CCV’s ontract is index linked to highest paid player, he may not need an increase?

    2. We won’t know if we had a good or bad window till after Xmas, but I do worry last Xmas was bad window with only one of the signings being a regular. Lasr summer wasnt much better with none of the signings starting on Sunday and several quickly departed.

Last point, we shouldn’t forget our old friend Impairment when reviewing transfer expenditure. I suspect the forthcoming accounts may show record levels.

Great advice on the ease of traveling between Holland’s big cities.

I’d lived in TX for a few years, when I last travelled on business there. The ease of moving around the country was better than a daily commute for some folks over here.

Also The Hague is a great city for social life.

Thanks for the update. I booked a night in Rotterdam for the 19th, €172 for a double room. there were quiet a few places available.

Problem now is tickets, any help from CQNers would be appreciated. however, if the worst comes to the worst we will get an ex-pat to purchase them outside the Celtic fan area.

Good to hear that a fair few like me remember Edward Ursus in a positive light, always congenial, never snide and a wide knowledge of all things football.

I wonder how he would be received on here if he were ever to return, one or rwo may be less than receptive but those from back then would surely welcome his return…

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————–

    Always enjoyed EwardUrsus’s contributions.

He fully accepted that the new “rangers” were not the real deal, That must have been very hard for him.

  11. Hvratski Jim,

I was just wondering about John Cairney this morning. I grew up hearing stories of him, as he was in the same class as my Auntie Maggie, and my Dad played with his big brother in Williamson Street.

If you want to know how it was to grow up in Parkhead in the 20s and 30s read his poem: Ode to a tenement.

    May he rest in peace.

  12. RIP John Cairney – actor, Celtic Quizball wizard and source of the nickname for Lion Jim Craig – Cairney.

You need to be of a certain age to know why the last one makes sense.

  13. Celtic Mac

Thanks for highlighting the 2 examples of Paul’s prose that you have. I wonder if these were exactly the same as those Tom Mc would have highlighted.

It looks like it’s cliche, rather than grammar, that is the complaint. “Opening talks” is a widely used phrase beyond blog levels- people even have opening gambits in conversation.

As for “talks are underway” – here’s what a grammar guru says:-

The phrase ‘discussions are underway’ is correct and usable in written English.

You can use this phrase when you want to inform someone that conversations about a certain topic are currently taking place. For example: “Discussions are underway to find a new location for our office.”.

So, I am quite prepared to accept that many people did better at Comprehension in schools, but I still like to have the specific offence detailed and explained rather than merely listed.

  14. Have been forced off Blog for about 10 days by an invasion of Ads.

They are bad here at the best of times but one large Ad kept reappearing blocking out entire screen and I couldn’t find any box to turn it off,

Anyhow I’m back but missed most of the pregame & aftergame fun, did log in once or twice on my phone but if not on the laptop I can’t be bothered.

Pre game there was a spate of hysterics by a few infrequent Posters all doom & gloom Merchants can’t remember names but was curious if they were still posting after the game, och one bad result and they will be back.

  15. Corkcelt

A few did have the good grace to return and acknowledge they called it wrong.

I haven’t seen Lucky Cody yet and he explicitly promised to return after the match to hand us our characters.

Hope the Bhoy is alright and he’s coping fine with the cognitive dissonance of having called Sunday’s game wrong.

  16. Just who is going to ” voluntarily ” impose draconian, undemocratic and tyrannical control measures on themselves. To say it will be voluntary is ludicrous and insults the intelligence of any sane person

The transport for football fans proposal reeks of totalitarian control. It is not about the environment or safety.

It’s only for football fans some may say : It is, For now.

Look at the terminology. ” No alcohol unless with a substantial meal “. That is right out of the Lock down book of phrases.

It must be robustly opposed with the instigators being named, shamed and ridiculed.

However, why is anyone surprised. It is a logical step following Lez, ulez, non inclusive cycle lanes, 15 minute cities like Oxford, Restricted zones. Etc, etc.

Could nobody see this coming ?

If anyone had even mentioned this ( Even in jest ) 5 years ago, you would have been accused of a never ever to occur conspiracy theory.

Be wary, be very wary and may the odds be forever in your favour.

“There were three contentious decisions in our defeat at Kilmarnock and they all went against us. Brendan remained silent. Taking it on the chin. I don’t think he has ever complained about a refereeing decision.

It’s about time we get loud about this situation.”

I think we can safely assume that we are raising these matters behind the scene in a professional manner. Indeed, I think some Q+As previously have shown this to be ongoing conversations – I think I read a “mea culpa” bit in another blog for complaining about inaction here only to later find out that it was being raised.

I would hazard a guess we did so after Killie and this might have even helped to ensure fair play with VAR at the derby.

Refs are a tight nit group and not good with criticism so I think its right (and to our benefit) to do this behind the scenes even if it wont play well to the gallery.
