Newco born from patronage of monetary inducements

740

Let’s be clear about what is going to happen on Friday.  Monetary inducements are being made to allow a newly created company to advance its football team two divisions up the league structure.

The overwhelming majority of money to pay for these financial inducements will be taken from Celtic, who vehemently oppose all these measures.  The SPL will reduce the commercial distribution to the top club in the league and pay-off everyone else.  41 teams will benefit financially from this proposition, only Celtic will lose.

For good measure, the SPL have declined to take gate sharing off the table.  Up to 30% of your season ticket money will soon be commandeered by Kilmarnock, Motherwell and the rest, who will take their slice and share some with the lower leagues.

All the while you can scarcely find a football fan of any club who is anything other than disgusted by this shoddy behaviour; Celtic fans are by no means isolated.  Most fans of former-club, Rangers, don’t want to see a phoenix assisted by such blatant patronage, lest Newco is forever known as a team which needed rules to be changed and money taken from Celtic to give it life.

Believe me, if Newco exists for 100 years, every day they score a goal someone will say, “They are only there because the rules were changed to help them and money was taken from Celtic to pay for it”.

They will forever be known as the Establishment club with definitive evidence that they benefited from the Establishment’s help.

The once-proud era of Scottish league football is surely over, what we are witnessing is merely evidence of this fact.  ‘Sport’ as gone from our football. Fans, clubs and the national bodies must accept this reality and start to make forward plans to breathe the oxygen of genuine competition into our game.

Where is Michel Platini when football really needs some help?

An idiotic Newco supporter wrote in to Metro on Friday which I read on my way to work. His point was Rangers (deid) should not be punished for trying to bring world class players to the league. (I can hear that laughter) The Metro have today published my response to this bafoon. I await his response.

We cannot stand idly by and let this injustice happen. Our club must protest in the strongest terms tp U.E.F.A’. Fair Finance Committee and all and sundry including S.F.A., S.P.L.and S.F.L. if they are still alive and haven’t died like their favourite club.

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

    Any CELTIC news????

I am fed up with the lingering death throes of the Scottish Establishment’s favourite team; it is like an oversized turd that just can’t be flushed away. It smells like I am living next to the Dung Heap of the local farmer’s field and the smell just won’t go away…

Thank God I am a Celtic Supporter! :-)

    Yours in Celtic,

  5. Think its time for all the Celtic supporters to go for lunch.

Good article, Paul. You are correct about the corrupt administration and failed football club. No doubt some, in the media mostly, will support these ill-considered proposals. As usual, some will pretend to be Celtic supporters – you know, the ones who appear on SSB etc but we never meet at Parkhead or in the pubs.

I suspect that, come the hour, CFC will do as we have always done – thrive through our own efforts and integrity. The rest could share 30% of that no problem.

I’m away for lunch. Something stinks.

  9. good afrernoon all,

Paul the last loine in the article is the all important one! indeed where is Michel Platini when football needs help?

I have said all along that surely uefa / fifa must step in to ensure the rules are followed fairly and not changed systematically to the benefit of one club but alas it seems I was wrong and uefa / fifa really are only there to drag out champions league draws and dish out the odd fine for banners they don’t like!!!!!

  10. I was in a good made today until I started thinking about the possibilty that our club, you and I, are going to have to give this crowd of vile, cheating despots a hand up! We should not countenance this one iota and neither should our club.

I have asked this before but not sure that I got a deffinitive answer. Why is everyone even talking about Sevco joining either Div 1 or Div 3? They are a brand new club and to my mind are no different to any other newly formed club – although I acknowledge they will have a lot of fans and probably a decent park to play on – so why are we all discussing their wish to join the SFL? There must be numerous clubs out there, Spartans, to name but one, who have been around for a lot longer and would bite your hand off for a place in the SFL!

Is it not simple or am I missing something….?

  11. Fassreifen - you can't put a price on integrity on

Great post Paul67. Newco need to start at the bottom, even their fans agree. Only the mafia at Hampden see things differently.

  12. Where is Platini? Probably looking for more money for UEFA.

Euro in 2016 with 24 teams means more money to UEFA. Today they signed contract with Gazprom to be one of the main sponsors for the Champions League. Gazprom is the sponsor of few clubs who play in the CL. If I’m not mistaken the company is the sponsor of the Russia team and sponsors Russia coach contract. Russia was fined 200 000 euros for their fans racist behaviour in Poland but today decided to appeal the verdict.

Will new sponsorship deal has any influance on appeal verdict? Surely not.

  13. Silver City 1888 on

With all that is going on, I wonder if Celtic have a plan B. A lot of the articles Paul is posting are leading me to feel “to hell with Scottish football. I’d rather Celtic were playing anywhere else.” Being a cynical old soul I find myself wondering if the anti-Celtic manovering has led to that as a natural reaction or if I am being pushed that way. Not that it would take much of a shove.

So are you saying there’s no press release?

  15. I’m not sure I’ve read any news articles or statements that suggest gate sharing may be part of the financial inducement on offer, anyone got a link to one?

  16. The SPL clubs can kill this SFA sponsored plan stone dead by refusing to allow SevCo access to the SPL after just one season in the lower divisions

If as we all suspect, Doncaster is heavily involved in this game rigging exercise then he is doing it with the full support of ALL of the other SPL clubs

If Celtic are indeed ‘dead against’ this idea, i would expect a statement issued shortly after the SFL decision stating that the club did not approve of the ‘parachute’ option but were outvoted by all the other SPL clubs

Failure to issue a statement will leave many fans deciding that Celtic were complicit in the ‘parachute’ option

  17. jungle jam67 on

    Good afternoon cnq

How can the SFA and SFA allow newco a vote.

    And class them as ragers

And Dundee or dunfermline are not allowed a vote.

If they are not in the spl by Fridays vote they should be allowed to vote

    As a member SPL club.

    Jam67

  18. Paul67

I don’t see the relevance of the issue of Celtic losing money in relation to Fridays SFL vote.

SPL clubs are in a position to change the voting rights as it stands no matter the outcome of Friday’s vote. Having voted out Newco (who had offered up the 11/1 majority anyway to gain access) Celtic were and are currently under this cloud anyway.

IMO a fairer split of prize money and SPL sponsorship is required. How we stave off the other SPL clubs milking our season ticket income is another matter. It is for our PLC to get their teeth into this one and show some muscle.

Highlighting it as an issue in lead up to SFL vote might just help some clubs vote in favour of Newco in the 1st.

Celtic are in a hellish position here.

It’s all very well calling for Celtic to “make a stand” or “say something.”

We still only get one vote.

Let’s fart against the thunder then. That’ll show them. Ha!

As for speaking out… let us never forget that Peter Houston spoke out after the DougieDougie match at Tannadice. He raged at the referee who “couldn’t wait to point to the penalty spot.” This was the same referee, said Houston, who had contrived to award penalties against United at Ibrox. Also, How dare the Celtic manager be thrilled to have won a tight game. How dare he rush off to salute the Celtic supporters who had just poured another £150,000-plus into Tannadice.

Fume, fume, he said. Rage, Rage, RAGE.

In his own post-match interview, Neil Lennon made no critical comments about the referee who subsequently was proven to be a liar and a cheat.

I missed the reports of Peter Houston ultimately needing 24 hour police protection. I still haven’t heard about the times when Peter Houston has been roused from his sleep and taken to a safe house in the middle of the night, along with his frightened family. I also missed the reports of the bullets that were sent to Tannadice, the bomb packages which were addressed to Peter Houston and prominent Dundee United supporters in various walks of Scottish life. I didn’t see the televised assault by a supporter on the Dundee United manager. I missed the bit about the jury refusing to return a guilty of assault verdict on the Tynecastle thug who assaulted Peter Houston.

I do know, from the papers and the broadcasters, that Lennon “brings it on himself” and “doesn’t do himself any favours.”

What Celtic can safely say and what Aberdeen or Hearts can say are two very different things. But even Raith Rovers have learned that the consequences of displeasing McCoist’s Goon Squad can be terrifyingly unpleasant.

Most of their fans are probably safe enough. I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone wearing a Raith Rovers top as casual wear.

    But I remember Mark Scott.

When the alphabet soup of law enforcement agencies, police forces, forensic fraud investigators, serious fraud squad officers, international financial crime detectives and tax inspectors have finally finished going through the cesspit of stinking corruption that has befouled this country for decades, there will be mountains of evidence to show the staggering scale of what Celtic have been up against.

In the meantime, they have my complete support. If they choose not to speak until they are absolutely ready and sure of their ground, I will understand and continue to back them.

It took Fergus McCann years and years to nail Jim Farry. He ultimately had to go outside the Scottish football procedures to do so after Farry had twice been cleared by in-house investigations conducted by people of George Peat’s wretched calibre. That’s the sort of thing that Celtic are up against.

It wasn’t until Duncan Ferguson was heading for Barlinnie for his vicious assault on John McStay that the Scottish football authorities even began to consider punishing the lanky thug.

Raith Rovers probably brought it on themselves and didn’t do themselves any favours, now that I think of it.

  28. Celbridge Celt on

I think Longmuir can actually emerge from this in a power of strength, after all he is the Chief Executive of the Scottish Football league and not someone we’re that experienced with, I imagine whatever principles he has (I have no idea where they lie), he has an opportunity to stand at the steps of Hampden on Friday and state that due to the rules that he and his organisation governs, they can not admit a Rangers FC to the Scottish Football League 1 or 3 for that matter. Perhaps they’ll duck out by chosing Division 3.

I foresee plenty of opportunities for Chief Executives of both the SFA and SPL in days to come, so this gentleman could step up to the plate, represent the majority of Football fans (including those of old Rangers and the new fans of Sevco) and deliver what the fans need, whilst doing something unusual, talking up the future of the game in Scotland.

You can email David Longmuir at david.longmuir@scottishfootballleague.com

I would suggest only supportive emails at this stage. He has in the past responded to emails – something I’d be surprised if Regan or Doncaster would do.

Unfortunately, I believe UEFA may be providing the SFA/SPL with advice already – whom I’m not convinced are an agency which puts profit above sporting integrity, as we’ve had years of talk about fiscal conduct & penalties but little evidence of it being applied.

  29. From the guardian 2002.

Gretna have been admitted to the Scottish League in place of Airdrieonians, putting an end to the hopes of Airdrie United and five other teams.

Scottish Football League secretary Peter Donald has admitted that the murky recent past of Airdrieoneans was the major reason why would-be replacement Airdrie United was strangled at birth by rival chairmen.

The club, set up by accountant Jim Ballantyne, existed only on paper but had been the hot favourite to be voted into the SFL’s Third Division to fill the void left by Airdrieonians, who were shut down by liquidators KPMG at the end of last season.

A playing staff had been recruited ready to sign on the dotted line, 1,500 fans had pledged to buy season tickets and many were sure also to travel to away games.

But the 27 SFL chairmen eligible to vote turned down the obvious financial benefits to instead welcome Gretna back to Scottish football for the first time since 1947.

Ballantyne had made strenuous efforts to disassociate himself from the financial mismanagement that had seen Airdrieonians disappear under a mountain of debt.

The accountant even offered to pay back some of it as a gesture of goodwill if the application were to be successful.

But the chairmen decided that to allow Airdrie United to emerge from the blackened ashes of Airdrieonians would be setting a dangerous precedent that might see cash-strapped football clubs disappear only to reappear under a different guise.

Different rules now for the buns.
