He did well for long spells last season playing on left with Izzy, thought he would have been a better option today – if he had been on bench :-) which he wasn’t.
Also glad to see young Liam get some game time, think he can make it as well ?
If the John Collins quotes really were hostages to fortune and provided a motivating source of resentment and anger from which an opposition will feed, then today’s evidence yet again proves that the old ” disrespectful opposition words pinned to the dressing room wall” tactic is much less productive than it is inferred to be.
JC uttered these words before the Thistle match. Alan Archibald and his team got first dibs on the blue tack for this story and we saw how motivated and angry the Thistle guys were i.e. – not much.
JC’s assessment was an honest one and not one tinged with WATP arrogance. He made the rather obvious point that Celtic are given a hard time in Euro qualifying ties on a much more regular basis than we are tested in the SPFL. The evidence for that rather uncontroversial fact is seen in not just Celtic’s struggles in Europe but the fairly abject failures of other Scottish clubs to do anything of note in the Euro arena.
Aberdeen are the next strongest team we face here. Even, were they not knocked out in this last Europa round, they would have floundered in the next and would have not enhanced our national co-efficient yet again.
This is a problem for us and for John Collins; it is not a boast. Without a more competitive playing environment, which is nearer the level of technical competence shown by the teams vying for qualification, then we will not get the kind of competitive practice that we need.
JC is not blaming the other SPFL teams for this. He managed Hibs and he knows what it is like to manage under financial restrictions. His comments were not intended to provoke others, but if we do we’ll manage to deal with it on the pitch, but to help our fans learn where the less easily solved problems are, and, in passing, to remind UEFA and FIFA of the inexorable fate that awaits Big clubs in small leagues, with the unchecked rise of the big 5 leagues.
Last year Celtic was a big(gish) name casualty; this year it was Ajax. It will continue to head in that direction if we cannot manage a change in our playing environment.

One of the curses of pragmatism is you are acutely aware that defeats and draws are possibilities in sporting competition. I want Ronny and Celtic to achieve CL Group Stages too.
But I understand that failure IS an option and I cannot bring myself to a position of demanding success be achieved. I expect to beat Malmo but I know we might lose.
Every time we play in europe the commentators always refer to the fact that it is a (big) step up from our league opposition. JC might have phrased this differently but the meaning is the same.

I don’t buy the rags but plenty do.
What I do agree with, is that we need to be more positive, rather than talk of our failings.

The buck stops with the coach.
If Ronny costs us another 12 mill. this year,he should resign or be sacked.
As for we punters, why is there animus towards P.L. over what his apparently huge salary costs us and no animus towards Ronny over the money he has cost us.12 or so mill. and counting.Perhaps.

First post on the new site, not posted for a while actually, but anyway, congrats on the change over, it was pretty smooth for me using a laptop and a tablet, for my regular lurking, for what its worth.
I´m going to be back in sunny Scotland for the first time in 4 years, for about 3 weeks, and totally desperate to watch the Bhoys play. Going to be back while the Champions League qualifier is on, so would love to watch that. What are the chances of managing to getting a ticket?
I would be traveling from Fife, so would be interested to know if there were any supporters groups going with a spare seat on a bus, or such? Also, would love to meet up with CQN´ers somewhere before the game.
And interested to know where would be a good place to watch the return game. I don´t know any decent bars in Fife to watch Celtic games in peace, any where decent, anyone can recommend? Might be able to go to Edinburgh, but really wouldn´t know if thats possible till later on.
I am a ST holder and can purchase up to 4 tickets, think Delaneys Dunky will be wanting 1 so that leaves 2 spare. Would be happy to purchase for you if you want.

There is also a valid point of view that playing in a weaker league provides us with the opportunity to
bed in new players
try new formations
draft in fringe players
and
rest vital players before and after a CL game.
Had we been up against another CL or EL quality side today we would have been unable to play the likes of Rogic, McGregor or Henderson.
Nor would we have been able to bring Commons up to full speed.
100 MPH.

It’s all about branding name branding
It’s all about the EPL
England hasn’t produced a player or team in 20 years!

British Rail isn’t

Celtic?
Celtic?

I think we need to be less critical of fringe players like McGregor, Rogic and Henderson.
They are not going to be given regular starts, and we do know that any player needs a wee run in the side to play his best.
So we have to critique them in light of the fact that they are asked to play bit parts and be stand ins when the principal actors are unavailable.
