Let’s be clear, the role of president of the SFA is one of the most sought-after in football. Alongside the FA, FA of Wales and Irish FA, the Scottish FA hold one of the four permanent members of the International Football Association Board – the body which controls the rules of the game and exerts soft influence on all structures below it, including Fifa.
Current SFA vice president, Rod Petrie, has his sights set on the job when current president, Alan McRae, retires. Rod has a problem, though. He was chair of the SFA Licensing Committee in March 2011, when Oldco Rangers were licenced to participate in Uefa competition the following season.
That decision is now under scrutiny, as High Court evidence forced the Association to examine what happened at the time. If Petrie is to survive in office long enough to assume the position of president, he needs allies who prepared to back him over what he did, or did not do, in March 2011.
How he is getting on with this I don’t know, but what we know for sure is that he backed Dave King’s call to have Gary Hughes removed from the SFA board over his “great unwashed” comment from years ago. Petrie is no friend of Newco, but there is co-dependency there. Gary Hughes was collateral damage.
Petrie should be recused from any work in connection with the awarding of a Uefa licence to Rangers in 2011. This award was made under his supervision yet he has remained active in how it is examined – a concerning governance failure. If the Licensing Committee is found to have failed to uphold its responsibilities, Petrie must go.

Cosy Corner Boy, No it wasn’t me. Im far too shy. I will admit that I had an appointment with the DWP across the road from Central Station one day. I knew some CQN folk might me there, before a mid week match but it was early. No one spoke to me so I just went home to my friends. That’s the nearest I’ve ever met anyone from CQN. I used to go to the games.
Cosy Corner Boy, your boy is a very fine man.
Travellerbhoy: Any chance of meeting you in Belfast at this weekend’s hootenanny?
If not, see you at Paradise sometime soon.
Sorry I should have said the pub across from Central Station.
Hunderbirds,
had my first World Cup bet this week,
Germany at 9/2, £20 free bet from Skybet.
I put up a you tube link to “last night at the proms”earlier to celebrate Delaneys birthday with Land of Hope and Glory. This prompted a few comments back and forth about the composer Edward Elgar.
Well apropos of nothing, tomorrow a Jockey called Andrew Thornton retires after his 4 rides at Uttoxeter. Not unusual for events to conspire for a jockey to bow out with a winner. The 210 race at Uttoxeter is called “The Andrew Thornton Congratulations on Your Retirement “race and he rides a horse called Edward Elgar..!!
Is this (a) a message from god (b) the deranged rambling of a degenerate gambler
Only you dear reader can decide
HUNDERBIRDS ARE GONE on 5TH JUNE 2018 11:23 PM
I think Spain v Brazil Final. Columbia are my outside bet for the SF after they knock out the Germans in the QF.
SF’s – Brazil v France and Spain v Columbia
Final – Brazil v Spain
Winner – Brazil
Re McGinn
He’s consistently showed up well against us over the years even going back to his time with St Mirren. Only 23 with lots of potential improvement in his game. If he signs I’m confident Brendan and the coaches will get this improvement from him.
He has some rough edges to his game that need refined but I can easily see that happening during his natural progression in the game that comes with experience and playing with better players etc.
I like the fact he’s a Celtic fan and it adds to his appeal.
Our captain rates him highly, that speaks volumes imo.

Willie Walace was signed to play alongside Joe McBride.
Wispy signed for Celtic on 6th December 1966 and Joe didn’t break his leg until just before Christmas.
Stein thought that a front line of McBride and Wallace woud have been unstoppable.
However, Joe was out for so long that by the time he returned to playing Celtic had virtually formed a style of play that suited the Wallace/Chalmers partnership and Joe simply couldn’t get into the team.
In other matters, I just can’t resist saying this:
Emmett’s speech from the ……. Doc?

Very good BRTH???
Sayings all come from somewhere. Someone cleverer than we come up with them.
From this Robert Emmet comes……..
“My race is run” there are others from this speech, but such oratory shapes history, as you know.
You aren’t bad at this yourself;-)
And from these speeches comes inspiration, leadership and a sense of purpose, direction.
(Talking about Emmet here)
Good luck in Malawi mhate. See you in a pub soon:-)

Thanks for that.
Yes Emmett’s oratory was something that my maternal grandfather used to go on about.
Strangely, I have always preferred the speech from the dock delivered by Thobold Wolfe Tone some 5 years earlier in 1798. Tone, never had the education or grand manner of Emmett, but using very simple and plain language he made his point and hit the target square on.

Equally, I have always loved the words of Padraig Pearse. He is often overlooked (if that be the right word) by the legend of James Connelly, but Pearse had the ability to stir the heart and soul with his oration.
His poem “The Rebel” has always been one of my favourities but here is his oration at the funeral of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa.
It is as prophetic as it is stirring:

Thanks for your kind wishes.
I am not mentally ready for Malawi yet though I am looking forward to it.
We received our itineries and work rotas today and there is a lot of getting up at early o’clock and going to work in the schools and kitchens and that is fine.
We are there to make a difference, but I also want to see and learn and so be able to describe what I see to others – both while I am there and when I come back home.
I want to be able to give a first hand account of what is needed, what is absent from the ordinary lives of the people of Malawi and what we take for granted each and every day.
Hopefully, the whole trip will be a great experience.
