Premier League TV deal, Brexit

306

It is small compensation that the FA Premier League TV deal for 2019-2022, announced yesterday, wasn’t another 71% increase, like the last time. With two of the smaller packages still to be decided, this contract is roughly comparable with the current deal.

The encouraging sign, for those of us with our noses pressed against the window, is that Sky, who won four of the five packages awarded so far, reduced their price per game to £9.3m, down from £10.8m, committing a total of £3.579bn over three years.

BT, who paid less per game for the current deal than Sky, upped their price for their one successful package to £9.22m per game from £7.6m, committing a total of £885m.

The remaining two packages are to broadcast the entire league programme across two match days each, three of which will be midweek and one bank holiday fixture list. The Premier League hope to entice additional competition from Amazon and Facebook into this space, but it is far from certain these rights will attract significant value. Will 10 games broadcast simultaneously attract significantly more armchair fans than one major game? I’m not convinced.

My expectation is for the final domestic rights figure to slightly underperform the current deal. What the Premier League has in its favour is the value of the pound compared to the euro, dollar and pretty much any other currency of note.

Since the last international rights were agreed, the pound depreciated following the Brexit vote, so foreign TV companies get far more £s for their domestic currency. While this will support GBP denominated TV revenues, it could mask a softening of the underlying value.

It should be noted that Celtic also ‘win’ from the flag waving act of economic illiteracy that is Brexit, due to their Champions League euro denominated remits. One small ray of sunshine in a very overcast ‘sky’.

  1. Got my ticket on-line for tonight but haven’t received a paper ticket in the post.

Anyone know if my season card will be activated ?

There was no info about this on the screen when making the booking.

  2. More grim news on the injury front, I’m sure I am not alone in expecting a full review of what is going on with players training schedules facilities etc, last year we were the fittest team in the league, this year we a like a box of eggs, players breaking down everywhere, hernias knees hamstrings, something is not right, if it is fatigue then a players first loyalty is to his parent club not playing internationals, no sign of Armstrong either after what we were told was a simple hernia op where the warm weather in Dubai was hopeful of helping, it didn’t surgey after the winter break not at the start of it more time out for a player we need now.

If our players are getting injured by tackles it is essential that the club speak out about tackling here and continue to do so, which is in Celtic’s case doesn’t need to have a ball present.

  3. My prediction for tonight is £1.1m revenue with £250k net profit.

Off oot – life’s too short!

  4. We need to start putting recall options for loan players, Christie and Sviatchenko have been needed at various times this season, at the end of the day they are our players.I think most would have Erik at CB tonight, rather than Ajer or Hendry,IMO

Thanks for your comment. I’m going to come back to it when I have a chance- even if in a new article.

  6. SFTB,

    Sorry you are unwell.

I demanded a Steward’s Enquiry into my recent disqualification from attending Paradise due to medical reasons.

Turns out my chemo doc is of a discerning Tim persuasion, recognising the potential benefits to my overall recovery by the inclusion of regular visits to Paradise. Doctor’s advice reversed.

  7. Lustig added to ever increasing injury list tonight. Think that will mean a 3 at the back (The last three standing) with KT and Forrest as wing backs. Probably similar set up as Pittodrie earlier in season

  8. Eurochamps. In the unlikely event, I would be keeping a safe distance. Delighted for you , that the stewards enquiry provided a good result. Enjoy pal . HH

  9. Bamboo,

It’s worth a phone call to clarify. I assumed the same a while back. My ST for some reason failed to activate. I had to go to the TO and get a printed ticket and missed about 20 minutes.

I subsequently contracted the TO and JP Taylor. To his credit JP Taylor replied and offered me a hospitality upgrade for 2 persons at a game of my choosing. Must take him up on it at some point.

I believe the system has proven more efficient since then. Touch wood.

  10. Lovely sunny day -way down south / 15 degrees at 10.30 .

Off to St Petersburg tomorrow . A weeks holiday ( and a game ) .. Weather forecast is -seriously cold !!!

    Game tonight !!!!! . We’ll see .

  11. The injury situation is unbelievable this season, as others have already said there MUST be a reason behind so many players getting injured it could not possibly be down to bad luck and coincidence not to this level.

    Something is very wrong somewhere.

Anybody turning up early tonight should bring their boots with them!!!!

None of our players would get on the bench for either of these teams.

We don’t have the money to attract that standard of player and even if we did they wouldn’t come to SPfL.

    Therein lies the challenge.

Anything in Europe from here on in is a bonus.

Tonight will be tough enough in the 2nd tier but at least we are there. We are moving forward. BR is building a young team with potential. In a couple of seasons we will be a surprise package.

Looking at Ronald’s astounding stats. For me it emphasises how great Messi is. While Ronaldo has the stats.. MESSI IS STILL THE BETTER PLAYER.. stats alone don’t tell the whole story

    Re our injury woes…

Watching last night’s Real PSG game there were very few tackles. Players at this level have touch and find space. SPfL is a kick fest.

Leaves our guys vulnerable and seriously disadvantages them in transitioning to higher level game.

I also feel the team has had a brutal schedule since BR arrived. Winning all domestic trophies and progressing in Europe comes at a cost.

we have only breached the £2m mark on three players under Rodgers: Ntcham, Sinclair (who has handsomely rewarded us for our investment) and Kouassi

    ============================

Only one of whom has really shown that he is able/deserves to hold down a place in the team.

And he was the cheapest of the three.

  15. I watched the Real v PSG game, I fully expected that PSG would win comfotably, anytime I have watched Real they are a team of individuals, last night they pulled together, we need a team performance tonight , no egos full effort and maximum focus for the whole match from everyone, see where it can take us. Good luck Celtic.

” They’re are always rumors .Such is football . I’m perfectly happy at PSG . I believe in this project ”

Russians potentially ring rusty after around 8wks of no competitive football ( tick )

Will the team discover a way to be more solid defensively rather than the gelatine consistency of late?

Moussa, Sinky et al ready to up their game and put Zenit to the sword ?

Recent displays leave me more hopeful than expectant.

I had a similar feeling prior to the Cologne game in 92. Performance levels need to undergo a similar transformation as it did then to get a good result IMO. McStay and Collins were outstanding on truly great European night.

Can this current team do something similar?

With a packed out Parkhead in full voice anything is possible .

    Not long to wait now.

Going for 7 titles iar and a double treble doesn’t seem like mediocrity – I would agree that our performances in Europe have been poor (to say the least). The CB situation has been handled poorly imo.

We operate in a mediocre league with less than mediocre income from TV

looking forward tonight in hope rather than expectation

Rather depends on the quality of the domestic opposition.

Which is probably poorer now than it’s ever been.

  21. C Levein has today revealed that all Celtics injury problems are caused by Scott Brown. “Even on the training pitch he’s flying into tackles. There should be more protection from him in training and on the team bus as he’s a bad loser at cards” said the Hearts supremo.

I did say the league is mediocre(not Celtic’s fault) but at least we’re not cheating our way to titles

Either you can’t or won’t consider the intricacies of the transfer market and think those who do are pining for mediocrity, so very apt, I’d suggest.

  24. Why being halfway up a mountain is mediocre

One of the things that is remarkable about mediocre is the extent to which it has retained its meaning over the course of more than four centuries of continual use. The word, when used as an adjective, has changed very little, if at all, in its meaning since it was used in a 1586 book titled The English Secretorie (our earliest known evidence): “Mediocre, a meane betwixt high and low, vehement and slender, too much and too little as we saye. . . .” The word comes to English from the Middle French, which took it from a Latin word meaning “halfway up a mountain” (mediocris). The noun form of mediocre is mediocrity.
